Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
Activity is overrated.. quality over quantity and id rather watch my favorite fighters every four months against good/decent oppositions instead of them feasting on tomato cans weekly..
They say activity keeps you sharp but when you really think about it, fighting bums who pose zero resistance cant help you in any way. If anything, that can give you a false sense of security thinking that you are better than you really are.
Were you impressed by Shannon Briggs' recent run? U think those fights helped him hone his craft?
All these old school fighters you guys love to rave about fought these kind of competition while putting more mileage on the odometer unnecessarily..
Today's way of doing things are much better.. fight 3 times a year against quality foes and preserve the body for a longer career and better life after boxing..
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
It's no surprise that I would agree with this one.
And it's not an excuse for being inactive, those that take long breaks still deserve to be scrutinized more closely.
But I do believe that the high quality sparring and preparation against worthy and challenging sparring partners and good coaching and conditioning of the body is worth in experience points than the experience gained from regularly thrashing the local soup kitchen blokes once a month. Quality counts!
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
Thai's do it "old skool" and stay busy, heck the Srisaket/Suriyan/Nawaphon trio have had like 4 or 5 fights already this year and that's kept them at weight, kept them getting paid and kept them staying active...no complaints as long as you have a meaningful fight every few months.
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
And look at the Thais, they're fucking shit at their own sport, they end up all fucked up and they look like they could use a sandwich not another fucking fight! lol
The professional level of thai boxing is far lower than real boxing (still much higher than MMA at this stage though but that is changing fast).
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
I just don't see what's so fucking impressive about quantity. It makes you tougher for some reason? Do these people not understand that pro boxers fight EVERY DAY in the gym? I get that sparring isn't a REAL fight, but neither is fighting a club fighter or beginner when you're a world champion.

Another fight pays for the sandwich, at least that was the case with Srisaket early on in his career where he was literally fighting for his meals. He's not done too badly for a "shit" fighter.

Yes yes, maybe that was a bit of a rash statement lol :)
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
The difference was, generally, "old school" boxers who were the champ, were THE champ and had to fight all comers to stay champ. Not like today where you can hold one or two. Belts and in the process avoid fighting acouple ofother very good fighters whoarepotentially the best in the division.
They took all sorts, totay. Sharp adfit i between the genuine challenges.
Whats Wlads excuse for Mormeck etc?

;D
Yeah? All comers you say? Wowsers!
There was nobody ducked back then I guess. And of course, no fighters ever got left in the cold because they didn't play ball with the mob or have the right mob connections.
And of course no fighter was ever denied a meaningful fight because of the colour of his skin. No promoter ever refused to take on a black fighter or put his kid in the ring with a black fighter because he wouldn't draw the same money a quality white fighter would.
And even if somehow a fighter WAS ducked or left in the cold for some reason, fear not! Because technology made access to information so easy! No doubt there would be tons of boxing websites writing articles about how fighter X is being ducked. The many internet boxing forums would be abuzz about how great this guy was and how he wasn't getting his shot. Oh and I bet his HL video and a couple of his fights would end up on Youtube and go viral, so the whole world knew about him and his incredible skill (as opposed to just the 50 drunk spectators at some smokey ball room who actually watched him fight).
What a magical time that was in boxing history. Nobody cared about money and everyone fought the toughest competition possible every time out because, gosh darn it, they owed it to the fans, to their country, and most importantly to god above!
I think I'm going to get cryogenically frozen. I'll leave a note to thaw me out when time travel is possible so I can go back and watch REAL MEN fight.
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
ross is obviously mentally challenged on this issue. Obviously the more titles their are the more top opponents you must face and beat to get them and then you are more demanded to always face top comp as mandatory defenses.
Mormeck was NOT a bum opponent. Mormeck is a multiple time world champion boxer.
What we consider a complete mismatch and too small for HW today, it must be borne that this is a multiple world champ who is more athletic than any of those older boxers, that is BIGGER than Ali, Norton, Frazier, Louis, Liston and only 1lb!! lighter than prime George Foreman!!! Big fucking George! And he has an excellent record against excellent opponents!
The fact that for Wladimir an opponent of this calibre is considered poor competition is PROOF how much higher the quality of opposition is today. Absolute proof!
Name 1, just 1, boxcar Joe type opponent that Wladimir fought? The records of his opponents are all there. Same for other modern fighters!
This mindless bashing is sickening! Especially when the past guys you promote are highly questionable themselves!
Re: Old school boxers fought once a week against bunch of Shannon Briggs' opponents
mormeck was a terrible opponent for wladimir that really cant be argued...

I'm not arguing that at all.
Mormeck WAS a terrible opponent for Wladimir.
But 36-4 Mormeck, multiple world champ, losing only to 2 other champs and a couple other fights when green, at a highly athletic 216lbs.
For THAT to have been the worst opponent for Wladimir in the last decade is testament to the fact how quality has improved.
What would have been the BEST opponent Ali or Louis ever faced, was a complete mismatch for Wladimir!
Compare 37-30 Musto and 174lb Conn to Mormeck!

Here's a brain scratcher...name on one hand the number of top ten 'opponents' Briggs legitimately beat :author:

Mercer and Liakovich and Foreman are the only great opponents.
Foreman was illegitimate though cause imo he beat Briggs.
Mercer was not top 10 at that time.
Leaving only Liakovich which I'm not sure what he was ranked at the time.
Therefore one can draw the conclusion that Briggs was never REALLY that good anyway.
His greatest LEGITIMATE achievement imo was dropping Lennox Lewis. A fight in which he was subsequently destroyed.
You could also say that a primer version of Briggs LOST to worse opponents than Leapai!
Nice observation Spicoli! :) Even I gave Briggs more credit than he was worth lol
