Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
I think Hopkins is the smartest, craftiest fighter of this era. A guy who used his head to break down opponents and win fights to become the longest reigning middleweight ever. on the other hand Roy Jones was the most gifted fighter of this era, his sheer talent led him to dominate three weight classes and reign as 1 P4P fighter for many years.
What would you pick if you had a choice from either all of Hopkins' craft or Roy Jones' talent

Good points.
Personally...I will always think that Hopkins is the more talented & Jones the more physically gifted.

Putting a gun to my head wouldn't get me to say Bernard is Roy's equal. No No No No :)

Well if he wasn't he was the closest thing to it in this era.
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
One could also make a legitamate argument that Pernell Whitaker deserves to at least be mentioned right behind both Bernard and Roy, especially if like me, you believe he got robbed against Oscar, an Oscar who at 147 was at the time unbeaten and better than the Oscar Bernard beat at 160.

No.... Roy is more talented and physically gifted. Hopkins just mastered the basics better. Roy knew the basics but didn't master them like Hopkins because of his talent and gifts. And in the end Hopkins lasted longer because of his mastery of the basics and skills. Roy just looked more spectacular because of his talent and physical gifts and skills :)

Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
Roy Jones was the most gifted fighter of this era sure and was a treat
to watch but needed a bigger heart

well the thread is for Bernard and roy, there are a few other fighters that can be mentioned also with them. but the thread is for these guys coz they were rivals. just like Oscar and Tito, Barrera and Morales

beating Tarver the first time took LOADS of heart ;) So did beating Hopkins with a broken right hand(which was broken before the fight happened) beating Telasco with a fractured wrist and NOT pulling out of the third tarver fight despite a broken right hand. These are the kind of things Joe Calzaghe pulls out of fights about ;D
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
Impossible to choose between them. Both have been superb for the sport over the years and we have been lucky enough to see them both in action over the years. If I had to pick it would be Roy Jones...nah Hopkins solely down to the fact he has chosen the right time to quit. Both are immense talents though.

Agreed...your'e right...in the end Hopkins lasted longer because of his mastery of the basics and skills...one thing that Jones did beat Hopkins at...counting light bulbs from the canvas. ;D
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
that was cold Wacko ;D
But i'd go with Roy Jones, simply because he moved up weight sooner and conquered men who was heavier than he was.

Hopkins was counting lightbulbs when Echols decked him the first time ;) but it wasn't counted a knockdown ;D
or did you forget?
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
i'll take hopkins...his going out a champ a master of his sport...roy went out depending on the talent thats no longer there...in the last fight with tarver he seem rather just stick his tongue out and shake his head then punch...as a fan of roy for so long...that was heartbreaking of what happen to him...he could of knock out tarver well atleast that was what i was hoping for...the roy we became a fan of never showed up...it was like find out santa clause didn't exist again...
hopkins still the same tough boxer...he came in a champ and his leaving a champ...

Have you forgotten that Jones is the one that lost consciousness?
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
its a shame that these to big fight stars only met once, and that was a boring fight with b-hop chasing jones around the ring with only a few punchs being thrown.
jones was very physically gifted, which is what made him a lond standing champion, i for one have never been a big fan of his but always give credit were its due the man was a champion
b-hop in his hayday was clever and super tough who mastered a long rain
if they had a rematch i feel b-hop would have won and then won the rubber match to

did he? or did he just close his eyes because they told him to lay back ;) And I think it was more slamming the back of his head on the canvas then the punch to the temple, but both will fwock you up if you're not careful. But you don't need to be knocked out to feel that wacko, you have your own methods ;D

Oh puh-leeze.
Don't get your hidden winky all twisted up trying to defend Jones...everyone knows Jones got knocked out two fights in a row...no comeback is necessary for that. ;) :lickish:

Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
Many fighters have suffered devastating defeats. I'm not saying Jones will come back from this and I'm not entertaining the thought that he will. But looking at both of their careers, those two losses from Jones won't ruin his legacy because it doesn't take away from the years he had already done already ;)
Since you're such an avid know and if you'd pick Hopkins
How about you name me someone Hopkins has beat that is better then james Toney was ;)
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
How about you throw Hasim Rahman's name along side Roy's in that respect, considering the Toney he beat was in just as piss poor shape as the Toney Roy beat ;D
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
Not really, I think that James style was nullified by that of Roy's. rahmans style was one that Toney SHOULD HAVE dominated but he didn't :( James seems to lost commiting and right now IF he fights Samuel Peter..then he needs to be 220 for that fight
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
Don't get me wrong, I too feel that no matter how good of shape Toney came in, Roy wins. But what he did to Toney was batter a guy who had to kill himself to make weight, all the while when Roy is coming into his own at his absolute most comfortable and dominant weightclass of his career. Not exactly even ground.
-
Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
As Roy told Toney as Toney was talking about knocking Roy out and Roy told him 'I'm your huckleberry'
wait let me go find that interview

I don't believe for two seconds that Roy Jones went into any fight with a broken hand. He's the same fighter who is notorious for his fear of great injury. (That, I won't visit Gerald McClellan thing) Why would he go into a fight, especially against a figher who's already knocked him out, with a broken hand?
In general, i think Roy works his oppenents better, and Hopkins works the direction of the match better. Hopkins is better at setting traps.

Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
hands down roy jones...everyone is still hyped because hop beat up the loud mouth tarver...give it until the next big fight happens and everyone will come back to reality....just after oscar beat up mayorga he was all of sudden back and ready to beat up everyone....including PBF....just wait until the high and excitement from hop beating tarver goes away those that are trying to make themselves believe that hop was close to roy will come back to reality...

Why bring Calzaghe's name into it?? >:mad ::**
This is only opinion but I think prime Hopkins against prime Jones Jr results in a slender decision for Hopkins.....

So who is Jones gonna step it up against to sway the opinion? I like him, but he's lost three straight matches to boxers with lesser ability than him. Did he lose his tactical ability?

They were pro but hopkins didnt become as good as he could be until into his 30's....the Hopkins of the early part of this decade would have given Jones problems....

his greatness relied on reflexes and agility...he's old and the legs and reflexes are the first thing to go...and that's whats wrong with roy now...he never had proper boxing technique and now he's suffering because he can't stand and trade without his legs and reflexes.....bernard had a style that was better equipped for the long run...

prime roy jones at 100% beats bernard by UD everytime...even bernard said he knew he lost to roy...that's usually a very convincing victory when the other fighter admits it....

Re: Hopkins or Roy Jones!!!
I concede that Hopkins lost their fight, but it wasnt as one sided as some have made out...
I maintain that the Hopkins that matured into this century could beat prime Jones Jr...

As you've heard this 10 million times now, just because Roy won the match back in '93 doesn't make that outcome the overall view of the way things go in their prime, or how they'll be viewed 20 years from now.
Roy is or was great. I just hope his legacy doesn't become like Holyfields. Fighting so far past his prime that his tactical ability has become nil.

What does calzaghe have to do with the argument.
