Joe Cortez - Disgraceful!
I've just finished watching the re-run of the Hatton v Mayweather fight and Joe Cortez was disgraceful.
As I say I'm not a big fan of either of these two fighters, please allow me to go on.
When any 2 fighters train and get ready for a bout and especially the most important fight of their lives you must be given a fair chance because they may not be given another opportunity again.
By any stage of the imagination I'm not suggesting Hatton would have won this bout if what I'm about to state was different but he would have had a better chance.
There was no need for Cortez to keep stepping early in the fight and how many times did he warn Mayweather for the elbow/forearm but never took a point off.
He also said during one of the rounds "when you get inside, don't hit him" what??????????
Then he went over to Hatton's corner and said "i'm gonna have to start taking some points off" they said "you allready have"
I just think if Hatton was allowed to fight his fight early on and without the constence nagging from Cortez, Hatton would have felt a little more composed and felt yes he has a genuine chance but Cortez denied him.
Mayweather kept turning to the side which is fine, but turning 3 quarter nearly turning you back is not fine and Cortez should have warned him of that.
There was a round when Hatton came in with a Jab turned turned straight left and he caught Floyd, he then came in and attempted to work on the inside, and Cortez broke them and if you watch carefully he actually stops Hatton.
Cortez should retire as I just think he was unfair and denied a person (Hatton in this case) a fair chance.
Like I said I don't know if Hatton would have won, becuase in all fairness he was very much in the fight until even round 7 or 8 but having the point deducted and having to fight the ref as well most definately frustrated Hatton, Hatton's work could have been alot better and subtle I think Hatton addmitted after he didn't stick to his original plan.
The point is the ref Joe Cortez was firm but NOT fair and I think Hatton deserved and has the ability to have taken this to points!
I'm not bitter and I'm not a Floyd Hater
Yes I don't believe Floyd is the greatest of all-time, that is just ridiculous, and I don't believe he is in the top ten all=time greats.
Yes he has some good names on his CV, and he is definately one of the best in the modern era but that's about it.
Re: Joe Cortez - Disgraceful!
Anyone would think Cortez committed a crime, Cortez was warning both men, Hatton had a point deducted for hitting Mayweather twice in the back of the head, and that was fair to take a point away. Hatton was working plenty on the inside and also Hatton made it a rough untidy fight, which Hatton wanted to do to get Mayweather off his rhythm Mayweather was just better on the inside than what Hatton expected. Am i missing something here folks ?? because i didn't think Cortez's refereeing was bad at all.

You must be joking Mayweather was easily beating Hatton, i don't know what fight you was watching because Hatton got outclassed throughout most of the fight.
Yes he has some good names on his CV, and he is definately one of the best in the modern era but that's about it.
What do you mean thats it ?? isn't that was what all boxers want to achieve ?? to be the best of there era and have good names on there record ??
Re: Joe Cortez - Disgraceful!

I guess being the best fighter in the world isn't much of an achievement anymore :-\

No doubt. Ricky is in my top 5 favorite fighters, but he lost, get over it. Why the big deal? HE LOST TO THE BEST IN THE WORLD!! What shame is that? I understand the whole embarassment over the WWE post check, but it's history now ??? Like Mick said; :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse: :beatdeadhorse:

Hopefully not. Best new poster in a while.
El Gamo: "Forgive me if I am wrong but didn't refs used to score fights? What do you think of this? And does anyone know when this stopped and why?"
West Coast: "cause dem refs would always set up dem fits all da tyme son,"
Clear, concise, doesn't go on and on writing for days about stuff nobody cares about with traditional spelling and shit.
Although I am a bit disconcerted that he can't make a final decision on whether to go with "son" or "sun"
Re: Joe Cortez - Disgraceful!
Watched the fight for the first time since the night and could not belive how bad it was refed.
Mayweathers team got to Cortez in the build up and it affected his parformance.
However the result would have been the same who ever the ref.
Re: Joe Cortez - Disgraceful!
I'm not saying Mayweather didn't deserve to win he did, all I'm saying is up until rounds 7 - 8 Hatton was still there, full credit to Mayweather for the way he finished the fight, no doubt!
My point is the ref was bad, I'm completly neutral and that's what I saw.
The thing that p***es me off is when people start saying Mayweather is the greatest of all time or even one of the greatest of all time, that's what I don't agree with.
Yes i rate him very highly he didn't have to beat Hatton to prove that I knew that anyway.
Let me give you my idea of ALL-TIME greats and then hopfully you can understand where I'm coming from.
Straight of the top of my head not in any order:
Sugar Ray Robinson
Roberto Duran
Henry Armstrong
Ali
Joe Lious
I think Manny Pacqiauo hasn't done to bad and if he beats Marquez where does that put him?

I think FM would beat Duran and Armstrong because a great BOXER always beats a great SLUGGER.

Agreed, Hatton lost get over it. Another thing that pisses me off is this bullshit notion that 'Hatton would have gone the distance if Cortez wasn't such a bad ref'..How in the fuck do you work that one out?? People are making it sound like Cortez was beating the shit out of Hatton with Mayweather??
The match ended with Ricky Hatton coming in with the usual wide left hook to which Mayweather responded with a sweet check hook which spelt the end for Ricky. What role exactly did Cortez play in that? How would that K.O have been different if Cortez 'stopped splitting them up so quickly'? They weren't even on the inside when the match ended. Could have been any ref, the result won't have changed.

No way would Floyd beat Duran, unless your messin with me, I can't take you serious on that.
Duran was defensive genuis and a demon going forward, no matter how many times these fought the outcome would be the same.
Duran wins everytime, he may even stop Floyd like rounds 13 or 14 and if it's a 12 rounder, probably stop Floyd rounds 11 or 12.
I can't believe i've even responded to this.
What would be interesting is Julio Cesar Chavez v Floyd and Arguello v Floyd.

Why is it that hard to believe Mayweather would beat Duran ?? Duran struggled with fast fighters lets not forget Duran was out boxed by mediocre fighters like Kirkland Laing and Robbie Simms.
Re: Joe Cortez - Disgraceful!
ya know I have to say it doesn't matter who was reffing the fight... floyd caught ricky with that left a few times in the fight by backing into the corner and then usin his speed to get out of the way and tag him the final time floyd just hit the button on an already weary hatton and that was it...not the refs fault hatton couldn't see floyd bait him to the corner
