Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
I've heard this, on the same card as Margarito-Judah assuming that ever gets signed.
Someone tell me what this says, its got something to do with Cotto and Gomez but its in Spanish:

Title: "Gomez dreams of Cotto"
(Small print to the right of Cottos picture)
It is being negotiated that the winner of Margarito-Judah faces Cotto.
According to this report Cotto-Gomez is actually being discussed as we speak. They feel that Cotto fighting Gomez will help Cotto with the US market being that Gomez was so popular in the Contender series and is also coming off 2 good wins vs. Gatti & Tackie.

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
That's not surprising.
After beating Mosley Arum basically said Cotto deserves a "gimme" before his next proper fight.

Which explains why the WBA planned ahead and decided that the Klose vs. Yuriy fight be for the 'Interim' title as they already know they will OK any fight Cotto makes cause they know he'll collect money for them his opponents will pay the sanctioning fees to fight him.
Now it all makes sense few months back I was on here asking why was the WBA making that fight for the Interim title as Cotto was active nad has been active. Turns out they didn't want to loose the money Cotto makes them and at the same time they needed to appear as tho they were following regulations hence why they made the fight for an Interim title.

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
I actually don't have a problem with this. You have to build towards big events. Last year Cotto started off with Urkal, then continued with Zab, and finished with Shane. This year, I'd be perfectly fine with his schedule if he fought Gomez, then Margarito/Williams/Cintron/Clottey, and finished with Mayweather. People get pissed when an elite fighter doesn't fight another elite fighter every fight. This plan is fine. Gomez would keep Cotto fresh and allow hime to fine tune some different things in his game. He's gonna need all the fine-tuning he can get if he wants to beat Floyd. If he stepped into the ring with Floyd in his next fight, I think Cotto would get stopped.

Yeh I also like the best fighters to fight softer opponents as well. One of the weaknesses of the UFC in my mind this past year has been that they have put every Pride fighter straight into a mega fight which most have invariably lost.
This does nothing to boost their sport and just instantly destroys the future marketability of those fighters. Who cares about Wanderlai Silva, Dan Henderson and Shogun now? They've all been beat in their UFC debut's so the UFC fans never got to see what was so dominant about them. It would have been much better had they all had an easy fight to look spectacular in beforehand and build an aura.
It's the same in boxing. Coming off a tough fight with Mosely some people are again questioning Cotto's vulnarabilities highlighting for example how Mosely finished the fight the stronger off the two and how he had Cotto backing up in the late rounds.
Far better for Cotto now to fight an opponent he can dominate and win in exciting fashion, once again recreating that feeling of invincibility.
That said though, I do like Alfonso and don't really want to see him get massacred at the hands of Cotto. I would have loved him (Gomez) to fight Cintron as I think that's a title fight he would have a chance of winning.

It was an analogy Mick, I wasn't making a comparison I was just using the UFC as an example of what I don't want to happen in boxing.

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
Yeah, the UFC/Pride were freaking stupid as hell this year, they cashed out early with all these super fights without proper buildup cards/fights and now everyone has lost except Silva and there really aren't any intriguing fights left and there really aren't any young stars coming up either. So for all their bluster and bravado, MMA really isn't fucking with boxing. Boxing had a HUGE year and most important, there are several highly rated undefeated fighters (Cotto, Williams, Khan, Valero, Dawson, Guzman, Povetkin, Berto, Linares) that are ready to burst into stardom along with a bunch of undefeated prospects (Linares, Juan Manuel Lopez, Devon Alexander, etc...) That's exactly why I think MMA will always be second to boxing. They never have the type of undefeated prodigies that boxing produces. Undefeated fighters create an air of invincibility. MMA will never have undefeated fighters because their fighters are jack of all trades and no one is truly elite at one thing except maybe Silva and Liddell with stand up.

I would add Katsidis.

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
Good match up i like Gomez i think he has improved a lot since coming out of the Contender. But he will get beaten in a bad way unfortunately, but i don't think this will be a walk in the park for Cotto. Gomez has heart and he will have his moments.

ditto
But I would prefere if Cotto fights PW if PBF or Oscar Chickens out

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
I think Cotto would torture poor Gomez
-
Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
A gomez fight makes sense for Cotto at this stage. Good reward for little risk, will expose his name more in the US, and a decent tune up for a superfight. He has had a few toughies in a row now, why not an easy bout for once.

When I first read the thread title, I thought: "Wha-a-a-a-a?"
But yeah..... a gimme at this point in time is probably not a bad idea as Cotto continues to build on his fan base and prepares for more huge fights. That being said, Gomez is a gamer, so he'd probably make it entertaining while it lasted.

It wouldn't suprise me Gomez went the distance. He's been in with guys who fought as high as super middlweight in Manfredo, Brinkley and Kuddour.
True they wern't 12 round fights but he seems durable. I wouldn't be suprised to see him still there at the final bell.

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
Make sense if on under card of Margarito VS. Judah.Arums riding the "Contender" rah-rah all the way and Cotto is Coming into his own with Fans.Gomez will come all balls with a and knowing that it could very well be his Huge oppurtunity.I Really see Cotto putting on the hurt and WINNING but call me a cynic......I dont think its a walk in the park for Cotto or a risk free "Gimme".Just Make Cotto Vs. MArgarito PLEASE.Two superb warriors who will leave the track shoes,The hurt hands, and non sense at home.
-
Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
This should be a good fight for as long as it lasts, Gomez is limited but determined. Gomez always looks soft and flabby though, I bet Cotto stops him with a body shot if they fight.

I can't imagine Cotto would be the undercard for Margarito though. If this was the same card Cotto would certainly command the main event slot.

Good Point taken Bilb's :D.Definite intent in match making here with show down on horizon (I hope). At this point Cotto should get top slot. There are many who would have no second doubts about calling Tony the Opponent for Zab as well...when Its become more and more obvious Judah is on his way to Doorman Doormat status.
Honestly,I don't care who's status is top billing If card actually comes off.Ring the bell already and let's get to the top Welters sorting it out.

Oh shit, that was funny. ;D  If he's not bitchin bout CC's and tryin to get more, then he's comparin Boxing to UFC and if he's not doing tht then he's criticizing Wlad Klitschko with me cus we in da JFAT Alliance 4 Life! Ya gotta love Bilbo though. Helps make the forum as great as it is.

Re: Could Arum possibly be making a Cotto-Alphonso Gomez fight?
Cotto deserves an easier fight but Gomez is still a decent fighter I guess.Marg neeeeeds to beat Zabadiel! I think Arum is making the right move and getting this card together rather than make the mistake of sitting around for Oscar and Floyd to tighten up their balls and choose to fight Cotto.
Oscar especially is a prick when it comes to making fights. Before the Floyd fight,he made us go around in circles, going to islands to think about it,holding imaginarypress conferences, mentioning EVERYONE from Tito to Winky.Just STFU and make a decision or get lost.
