Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
He has promised not to make the same mistakes as Ricky Hatton in his Las Vegas super-fight with Bernard Hopkins.
Calzaghe is continuing to train in familiar surroundings in Wales before jetting out to the United States a fortnight before the April 19 showdown.
Excitement is building both here and in the States over Calzaghe’s American adventure, but the Welshman insists that keeping his cool in the Nevada desert will be the key to victory.
And that is something Hatton spectacularly failed to do ahead of his ill-fated December date with Floyd Mayweather, the Mancunian clearly too hyped up at the weigh-in before thousands of his travelling fans.
“Perhaps it got to Hatton a bit but you’ve got to keep your discipline and stay cool, calm and collected,” said Calzaghe....

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
I'm actually looking forward to the weigh in almost as much as the fight, Hopkins is definetly going to try and get in his head and make him uncomfortable... I wonder how many UK fans will make the trip this time though... Anyone have any idea how many tickets have been sold overseas etc?

And here I thought Hatton lost because he matched up with a superior opponent. Learned something new...

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
It doesn't matter if Calzaghe repeats Hatton's mistake. He's still losing the fight
-
Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
Got my tickets carnt wait for the fight, weight in should be fun to.
-
Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
he also mentioned FRANK BRUNO, NAZZIM HAMED and BARRY McGUIAGAN........... truth is HATTON lost to the p4p no1, FRANK was beaten by TYSON when mike was in his prime and even naz ( who i really disliked ) was beat by a prime barerra
joes fighting a semi retired, past his best 43 year old hopkins....its hardly the same. the others were all mostly big underdogs to win in the first place were as calzaghe is the big favorite, all the others entered the lions den, took a big risk.........that takes courage, good old joes only taking this fight due to hopkins being a lesser version of himself at 43 so he should stay away from putting his name amung those brave gladitors who willing took on better fighters then themselfs
also once again joes interview is full of his " i've been champion for over 10 years, i'm undefeated, i've had big fights before etc etc etc............. someone should write him some new interview materail
i hope now he gets royaly beaten and shuts up........ hes got no buisness useing national heros defeats as a cheap build up for himself, how many fights has he had where you looked and said " oh god, thats goner be a real tough one.......joe may get hurt in there ". when hatton fought alot of people said mayweather will be to big, to fast and to good for him, when BRUNO fought tyson we all knew he was in big truble. joes always taken things in his comfort zone
just stuck to your same old boring line and dont mention your name in the same breath as the other braver men who fought in vegas from the uk

Bruno lost wat before he got in the ring ,he was like a scared cat on way to the ring!

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
Will Sky be doing a 'Joe' documentary before the fight.
The ITV ones were comedy:
'Look at that', says Joe as he points across the field, 'fresh air'.
-
Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
I get the feeling that Galzaghe and Hatton do not get on. They have made negative comments in the past about each other implying they were the best of British. I was surprised that Joe was allowed at the Hatton weigh in, I bet Hatton will not be there for the fight.

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
I actually want Hopkins to win coz I wanna see Slappers "0" go but I see him beating Hopkins. I hope I'm wrong even with a shit ass sig from VD I want Hopkins to win and I'll be rooting for Bernard on the night.

Better make room for Two of those Sig's Lefty, Remember .....;D Guess I need to come up with a more potent Sig......Hmmmm

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
Im still surprised that Hopkins signed up for this. I can only assume its for the final paycheck. Calzaghe is gonna make him look old, lazy and slow. Hopkins was faded against Winky IMO and looked less than stellar in his final fights at MW. Calzaghe is still throwing 1000 punches at 36 and not looking too bad for it...

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
Joe as much as i hope you do not go out there and make stupid mistakes....a 42 year old Bernard Hopkins is far from a prime and at his physical peak PBF. However, you cannot get careless and get wound up by certain aspects of BH game. Good luck out there....i sense youll need it!

There is no way Hopkins took this fight for the paycheck. Absolutely NO way, he'd never take a fight he didn't believe he could win. Calzaghe also doesn't represent some mega payday, plus Hopkins could have fought far lesser fighters for a good one. I think Hopkins has to see something in Calzaghe he can exploit big time. The fact is he already has no problem with southpaws, and his right hand should serve as if nothing else an equalizer to Calzaghe's workrate. It doesn't matter if Joe throws 1000 punches against Jeff Lacy or Sakio Bika, he's not going to be that active against Hopkins, I'd bet my life on it. You can't be, Hopkins is too smart to get hit with so many flurries or intimidated by workrate alone. I do agree Hop is hard pressed to win this fight, but I think no matter what happens he is going to land some great right hands that will slow Calzaghe down. I expect Bernard to adopt the role of the puncher, moreso than he has done in almost any of his fights. Hopkin's has looked to have been slipping lately, but Calzaghe has still never fought anyone nearly as crafty, and I think he is really vulnerable to straight right's, especially counter's.

An interesting post. I agree that Calzaghes workrate will be less than what we have seen in recent fights. Hopkins is cagey and difficult to land on cleanly. Calzaghe knows he needs to make it convincing with it being a fight against an old man though and will most definitely try to impress with his workrate. True, the Hopkins lead right is always a threat. Calzaghe got sloppy a couple of times against Kessler but pretty much walked on through and kept on doing his thing. I find it hard to envision Hopkins stopping Calzaghe with his right and harder to to see him being busy enough to have any chance on the cards. You say that Calzaghe has never fought anyone like Hopkins. That is true. But Hopkins has never fought someone with the attributes Calzaghe has. Calzaghe is a darn sight better than anyone on the Hopkins resume and in recent times lets not forget that Hopkins was matched for workrate by Taylor twice and we all question Taylors stamina now. Nobody can question that Joe will push Hopkins to the limits in terms of work. And at 43 there is no way he can take it at the pace Calzaghe will set.
Hopkins has made a mistake and I truly believe this will be his last pay day. He will have no option but to retire after this.

No Joe of course you wont make the same mistakes as Ricky , as Hatton fought the P4P best in his Prime , and you are fighting a 43 year old who is past his prime, thats actually why Hatton lost , not because he trained in unfamilier sorroundings !!!! PLEASE be careful Joe , that Bernard's wheel chair doesnt run over your foot during the fight.

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
Someone needs to go tell Floyd that he's lucky Ricky didn't keep his cool or Floyd would have got messed up.. ;D
At least Calzaghe's head is in the right place... I don't think there was anything Hatton could have done in the hot Las Vegas desert to have beaten Mayweather.. Mistakes aside.. But Calzaghe is going to need everything he's got going for Hopkins...
I'm still picking him to win, but I think Hopkins is at least mentally, going to be his toughest opponent yet...

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
I agree with the points made about Calzaghe's opponent not being the massive favourite that Mayweather was, but Hopkins is still ranked in more p4p top 10's in the world, and the fact is Hopkins was the opponent that was demanded by very many people on this forum (many saying Calzaghe wouldn't take the fight cause he's a coward), and now Hopkins being dismissed as too old and a shadow of his former self by some?
Calzaghe wouldn't get respect from some people if he had a four on one fight with Klitshko, Peter, Haye and the Big Show and knocked all of them out.

Well of course he won't make some mistakes there two totally different boxers. Hatton is a swarmer who uses angles on the inside and also clinches to off set opponent's Rhythm, Calzaghe is an unorthodox Southpaw who uses angles on the outside and uses quick combinations to overwhelm his opponent. Hatton didn't really make any mistakes he went out there and tried to do what he does best swarm Mayweather and try and rough him up and hand out sustained beating on the inside. But it didn't work because Mayweather was better than Hatton on the inside, and was also more physical than Hatton expected and i think that shocked Hatton personally. And also Mayweather and Hopkins are two totally different boxers style wise as well.

All true ICE , but the reason Calzaghe is saying this , is to fool people that Hopkins at this stage is as bigger treat as fighting a prime Mayweather.

We've always known this would happen though Rhun.
Unlike the Kessler fight the divs know they can't lose with this one. It doesn't matter if Calzaghe wins because they already have Hopkins excuses firmly set in place.

Fenster do you consider Hopkins as big a fight as Mayweather ? in the sence that Mayweather was P4P the best ?
i think thats the point i was making. Mayweather = prime / Hopkins = 43 ?? you see the difference ??

No offence but when it comes to Calzaghe it's not worth it with the likes of you. You hate the guy. You'll always find fault in anything he does or says. :)

And NO I don't consider two old boys (Cal-Hop) as big a fight as two guys in their prime (Floyd-Hatt)
And this figjht aint as big. Thats obvious.

Re: Calzaghe: "I wont repeat Hatton mistakes! "
Calzaghe is the favorite with good reason. That being said, the thing's Joe is really good at may not work as well against Hopkins as it did against other opponents. Hopkins is going to make this as inside and dirty as possible. He'll look to pick of Joe's punches with the edges of his body to hurt those brittle hands. Hopkins defense will largely negate Calzaghe's speed so in the end it'll be who is willing to give just a little bit more than their usual to take the fight. Calzaghe couldn't make 168 anymore, but that doesn't mean he'll take to 175. Gatti couldn't make 140, but 147 was too big. Hopkins will look to impress his size upon Calzaghe and see how he handles it, push him around to keep those odd-angled punches to a minimum and throw in a little dirt; B-Hop will come in with his head per usual, hold and hit and throw some weird punches himself in an attempt to confuse Joe. The reason Hopkins was less willing to engage Jermain Taylor was because Jermain could have hurt him had he caught him with one big punch. Joe isn't that type of fighter- he's more like Winky Wright so Hopkins will be a lot more eager to mix it up. Calzaghe SHOULD win, but if any fight has upset written on it, it's this one.

You know the point I was making though.....you'll very rarely see a p4p list without Hopkins in it...even at 43, but Mayweather is a different class to anyone else in the p4p list so no it isn't a straight comparison.

Calzaghe is a darn sight better than Roy Jones? Wow, I can't agree with that whatsoever. If you meant in recent years then it's probably a given, at least that Calzaghe will be in better form that any recent Hopkins opponent. Trinidad, Winky, and Tarver are still great names mind you, that have achieved more in the sport than Calzaghe excepting for Tarver, who was still a hot commodity when Hop fought him. You say Hopkins will have no option to retire.. Well sure, but not because of the punishment he'll take from Calzaghe alone:rolleyes: Because he's FORTY THREE. I can't understand how all these Calzaghe fans are calling it a pre packaged excuse that when Hopkins loses people will point to his age... Well, DUH. It's not like anyone has come out and said that his age won't matter beforehand... It's not as though you have to factor in the chance that Hopkins will suddenly get old overnight, we've seen him get older and older over the last five years... However, I don't think this being Hopkins last fight should be seen as less reason to pick him to win, I mean Hopkins is absolutely too proud to take a payday just because he's too old to stick around longer.. If anything it will drive him to be better, knowing this is his last hurrah. I think combining that with the fact that Joe is probably a style that Hopkins is well suited to, makes it extremely interesting, if nothing else to see what tricks Hopkins has up his sleeve. I'm not denying for one second he can't fight at Calzaghe's pace, but if you think Hopkins plans too your being naive.
