My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Hey guys this is Anthony Karperis. I've been boxing for about two years now and I participated in my first Golden Gloves this year. I'm in the 132 Novice class and I made it into the finals and I'm fighting at MSG in about two weeks. I have my fights on youtube and I wanted to see what you guys thought. I got off to a rough start in my first fight, but I;ve been trying to learn from my mistakes. If you guys have any constructive criticism that'd be great. I wanna learn as much is I can. THANKS

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Good stuff , I only watched the first one but from that one I mainly noticed you didn't jab much. Alot of in fighting for an amateur fight, I'm glad you won because your opponent kind of seemed like a punk at first with the taunts and not touching your gloves a few times. I like the defense but you went into a little bit of a shell and that makes it look like the other guy is getting the better of it when he may not be landing clean. In that 3rd you did good by letting him punch himself out abit and then came back with some good combos. I'll watch the others tommorrow it's kind of late now. You mixed in some good combos on the inside. Work on your slipping and head movement.

Congratualations man, that a great achievement already!

Yeah I wasn't doing so well in the first fight because I had NO legs whatsoever, so I pretty much did what I could do and blocked, that isn't my style really at all. I totally think I looked horrible in the first fight and I really started to question how well i was gonna do from there...but I got back to the gym, changed my training up a little and everythings been falling into place ever since...the way i fought the last three fights if pretty much how I fight in the gym, so that would probably be the best thing to critique, thanks a lot though for taking the time to post, i appreciate it

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
First fights are always the shakiest. Always.
TRhen if you get through you're fighting on an entirely different level for the next fight, I can relate!

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
i SAW IN YOUR FIRST FIGHT , THAT YOU FOUGHT THE FIGHT OF THE OTHER GUY , WITHOUT ENOUGHT JABS , TRY TO SAVE YOUR ENERGY LIKE THE OTHER FIGHTS , THE STAMINA IS THE MOST .......YOU DOING GOOD MY FRIEND , I HOPE YOU KEEP IN THAT WAY MAN.......SOOO TAKE CARE AND GO AHEAD.........I HOPE SEE YOU IN PRO.....;D

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
thanks macho i appreciate, haha trust me I love having stamina lol thats y in the last fight I paced myself alot more, in the third however i felt good and i just wanted to come out hard so i pushed it, but im training myself to be a little more agressive, which to go with that I need more stamina, so i added a little more interval training, different drills and stuff, so we'll see what happens haha

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
You improved alot in the second fight all of the things I mentioned above you did better. I like the in and out, and you did some good evasive inside moves. Good lead left hook right cross combo. The other guy didn't block too well but you rocked him alot and good job on getting the stoppage.
-
Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Third fight you got a little sloppy, but I think you were trying to take him out, and kind of abandoned technique just a little. The left hand drops a little, don't get in a habit of that, otherwise not bad.

You looked tight in the first fight. You were luck to have good judges who can tell the difference between a landed punch and a thrown punch. The guy outworked you, but you hit him with some great counters, especially left hooks to the body.
You looked like a whole different fighter in the other bouts. Much better. Man, that third guy was holding a lot. Great job, all around of not heading hunting and doing the body work when it was there. That's probably what kept you winning - a good high/low attack. It opened up the head for you.
I agree you should use your jab more. Better boxers won't let you walk in and tee off on them with those powershot combo's. You need to jab your way in more. Also, be careful about squaring up your body. One of the days you'll get in with somebody who likes to bodypunch and he'll take advantage of those openning.
You looked great for novice. Keep it up man. You have talent. Good handspeed and a fighters mentality. I'll rep you. You may be the first person to 100 reps and under 10 posts.

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Thanks a lot man i appreciate it, i'll definately work on my jab and turning my body a little more

You should try posting these in the Ask The Trainer section as well, there are some very knowledgeable posters in there who do not often visit this portion of the site.

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Definately start posting over to the "ask the trainer site." If you know any Master Division fighters looking for bouts, let me know on PM or over on the trainer site. I would travel to NY for a bout.

I just posted it in there too...btw how much you weigh?
-
Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Wow!
It's like you did a 360 degree from fight #1 to fight#2...
Completely different.
You did something that I like a lot and that was reset/start over. You came in and if nothing was there you quickly circled and or moved I think thats really good.
I'm not sure how old you are or how much boxing you've seen but theirs a boxer who fought through the 80's and early 90's by the name of Edwin 'Chapo' Rosario who did this well. Your footwork in that second fight reminded me of him.

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
I'm 19yrs old by the way, I'm not familiar with that boxer, i've pretty much been watching it since 2001 but I've seen alot, just not that particular boxer haha but thank you for the compliment ill definately search up some videos on him

The quality of this video is not great but you can see here what I mean
you do the same thing you step in and out and you circle around very well.

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
If you post this on ask the trainer you will get great advice. You have great head movement, keep those hands up, and a good jab. Make sure you use that jab, you have a great jab and keep bouncing off you toes. For your weight you should be a little less flat footed. Remember your combinations as they are helping you and use them as you don't seem to have the one punch KO power. When fighting a guy that bombs, the combos will win you the fight. You move very well around the ring - keep that up.
You will be a fighter if you keep this level of fighting. Well done son.

Pretty good...You kept getting better as the fights went on...I can offer a few things to you in advice..
1. As already mentioned jab more...a lot more...when you get to the Garden you will meet a whole new level of comp...your jab can mean a win or loss on the cards...
2. When you are against the ropes I noticed a few times you dropped your left when sliding off..leave yourself wide open for a right hand..
Good stuff keep working at it...good luck at the Garden

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Just finished watching em all...i don't really have any more to add than has been already stated, good stuff man.
-
Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Thanks guys, I've been working on my jab alot now, throwing it from different angles and stuff and I have been trying to use it more, in my 4th fight I put a decent amount out, obviously i gotta throw more of em but at least I feel I have been improving in that aspect

man, i think you look great.. real evasive and all..
the only thing i'd add (don't think it's been said) is that i think it was the 3rd fight of the bunch you posted, but the kid kept lunging in to clinch, with his hands low.. and i know that it's real easy to overanalyze everything that's going on when you're inside the ring.. but if you took a step back as he came in and threw a straight right i think he would've hit the deck out cold..
especially when you would lead with body shots, you had your opponent dropping his elbows to block them.. so if you feinted and threw a straight right up top it would be RIGHT on the money..
i'm not saying you should watch Peter Manfredo vids.. but all of his decent knockouts were from straight right hands/right crosses.. he doesn't have a TON of power, but when you hit someone as dead on as he has then they will go down..
-
Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Good stuff kid ;). I liked your hand speed and I also notice your stamina is also good.
Try to use that jab a bit more like someone said and practice your movement more. Movement to the sides helps avoiding punches as well and taht also gets the other guy more tired.
I became a fan. ;D keep those videos coming

I'm walking around at 180 currently. I'm looking for a bout at 178, but if I were given some notice, I could bust my ass down to 165 (I think?).

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Hey guys I won the finals!! the day started off when i went to the city to weighin around 11, i weighed in a lb under...but anywayz i made weight and hung around the whole day at the affinia in the city, 6 o clock i had to be back at msg where i waited to go on around 8:45...anywayz the first round started off feeling eachother out a bit and i noticed i could land my jab at will so i used it to set some other stuff later on. we traded some combos and i noticed he wasnt as strong as i thought he would be so i wasnt afraid to get in and strike to the body...towards the end of the round he kept his hand high so i teed off to the body with some cotto-esque shots haha 2nd round started off and like i ssaid i used my jab a lot and i would hit the body with it and come over with an over hand right which landed on the button and sent him back...i went after him on the ropes til he got out of the corner...third round we pretty much went after eachother and i moved my head a lot, i noticed he couldnt figure out my defense so i just kept with it...anywayz i won by a unanimous decision and boy am i pumped hah thanks again for your support and ill get the video up sometime when it gets on msg, because my friend who taped it did horrible job because he wasexcited haha

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Congratualations fella, that is truely fantastic!
Well done!

Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
Awesome job(this is No Contest...I lost a bet) I like that you jab to the body, not alot of people use that but it is great for opening up the right hand follow up. That's what Mayweather has been doing lately to ODLH and I saw him do it to Hatton as well. Congrats on winning the finals.
-
Re: My fights from the NY Golden Gloves...
