Is there anyone without a padded record?
It occured to me the other day that in boxing today there is not a fighter whose record is not ripped to threads on this forum. In fact it seems that any fighters record can be questioned.
Here are a few details.
Floyd Mayweather. Had a good start to career but hasnt fought anyone of note above 140. Sure DLH was good but is now old, and Hatton was too small. Ducks real Welters.
Bernard Hopkins. Only real wins are against blown up welters, and he lost against first decent MW he faced twice. Tarver was weight drained.
Manny Pac. Only notable wins are against old fighters, and he was lucky to get two decisions against Marquez.
Miguel Cotto. Only two major wins are against washed up fighters in Mosely and Judah. Is robotic and chinny.
Joe Calzaghe. Is undefeated but fought 20 defences v bums.
Ricky Hatton. 2 best wins against shot fighters, is shit at 147 and should have lost to Collazo.
I do not agree with these statments. All those mentioned are great fighters and have achieved extraordinary things in boxing.
My question is tho, are all fighters records padded these days, or are we all to harsh on fighters such as these? Should we give fighters a break and stop being haters?

Hey man EVERYONE (bar Lyle) is a Muhammad Ali freak here....I am sure HE never beat anyone who was washed up or didn't perform his best vs some journeyman :beat:

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Yurokis Gamboa , he is off to a real fast start, but the guy has had over 400 am bouts including Olympics. As far as established pro's hmmm....theres always a little padding early.

Also Odlanier Solis and Povetkin come to my mind...

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
That German promoter (Oner?) really scored when he got all those Cuban defectors to join his stable. He isnt afraid to match them tough thats for sure.
-
Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
The hardest of critics and nay sayers can pick ANY fighters record to pieces. The Journey men and "washed up" opponents are just a piece of the puzzle And One of the best Moments is win some one forgets to tell them they are just Padding and the upset is spung....love It!
Padding is some what a constant.......When they first come up & develope ..... In some cases,When/if they Make a comeback from Injury or defeat......and when they refuse to accept that they do not have it at the top level any more and the Career hits down slide with Tough fights with guys that they would have walked through years prior.

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
The only guy i can think of without a padded record is Tyrone Brunson , i mean that guy has had to go through hell to get 19 wins , and there has been rumors that in his 20th fight he will face a guy who the promoters haven't has to have exhumed.;D

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
I can't think of any off the top of my head.
ODLH has the best resume i can think of.
There is too much money to be made from having an undefeated fighter and too much to lose from losing one or two fights.
Too many world titles means that a 20-0 fighter with an extremely padded record can fight for a world title.....and then defend it against mandatories, who alos don't really deserve world title shots.
It's more of a business than it is a sport.
-
Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Its got to be ODLH he beat Jeff Mayweather with only 4 pro fights, he then beat Troy Dorsey with 6 pro fights, he then won Super Featherweight title with only 11 pro fights. And then after that he fought good opponent's after good opponents. Also Evander Holyfield fought decent opposition then he beat Dwight Muhammad Qawi only after 11 pro fights, he then demolished every single good Cruiserweight there was to beat, he then moved up and started fighting the best the Heavyweight division had to offer.

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Like almost all fighters, Lennox had some padding early, for the first two years of his career. After that, he fought almost no tomato cans, and he ducked nobody. Looking at his list of fights from 1991 - 2003, it's pretty amazing. He fought a few weak fighters in 1991 when he was defending the Euro belt, but starting with the Ruddock fight, he went on an amazing run.

No doubt.I was guilty of buying The Ruddock drama.I lost twenty bucks and a sixer of Heineken that Halloween night.....Back in Lewis's two left feet days,He pulverized Him.Lewis has to be one of the top Fighters I have done a turn around on.At first he was a big clumsy stiff oaf but over the years I have nothing but huge respect for him.
How good was Gary Mason when He fought Lewis for Euro title??Vaguely remember he had some Retina Problems but came In with a glossy undefeated record?
-
Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Mason was decent to good.
He had had surgery on the retina months before.
Lewis sparred with tape over the sparring partners eyes (on the headguards) and targeted it with the jab.
Lennox thought Msson was durable and tough so he swelled mason's eye like an apple (literally) and stopped the fight.

:o That is just brutal.....very canny and schooled move.Talk about exploiting a guys weakness.....Damn!

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
ODLH record has very little padding. I dont think he ever fought anyone with more losses then wins.
-
Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Yeah looking at ODLH's record I feel a little bad for giving him shit for fighting Forbes, he has put his work in and deserves a little bit of a gimme.
-
Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Kostya Tszyu fought La Porte in his 4th fight, and Bramble in his 10th, then won a world title in his 14th i think.
Guys like ODLH, Tszyu and Gamboa can be moved along faster because of their long amature careers.

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
I wanted to say Holyfield, but his record has a few soft touches in their at both ends...
Great post! It has me going through my list of tough guys...

Holyfield is probably the closest thing to a guy u cannot accuse of having a padded record. Mainly because nearly all his toughest opponents were way bigger than him. Good pick up mate.
-
Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
Although he also has a soft beginning (high school gyms and all), I would still recommend Marvelous Marvin Hagler for not being padded.
If you excuse his late 70's fights (which he had to take b/c no one would fight him for their title), he was fighting all top 10's until his disgusted end.

Thx for the big up... As I see it, he fought for the world title within his first twelve fights, unified the division, moved up in weight, stayed top 10 his whole career, won the title 4 times and only got soft when his self proclaimed 'arm problem' earned him all of those losses.
Damn... he just fought for the 'title' last year!!!

Is there anyone without a padded record?
Of course there is... the fighters that are put in the ring agaings fighters with padded records... hehe.

Re: Is there anyone without a padded record?
A lot of mexican fighters do not get to start out with a padded record. That's why the first time you hear about them, they already have 3 losses.
