Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
To me, the most startling difference to Cotto's game is just how destructive his jab has become.
A few years ago when he was a prospect, he had a good jab, but everything revolved around the left hook to the body. Now his jab is the punch he builds everything around. He throws it with speed, with accuracy, and it lands with the power of a right cross.
So, where does Cotto's jab rank right now among active fighters? The best? 2nd best behind Wlad? Top 5?

Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
To be fair...
It's undoubtedly one of the best I've seen
It's remarkably precise & powerful, and not to mention, painfully fast!
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
He is beginning to use the jab more and make great use of it...One of the best in the business....Sorry but no...To have a great jab you need to make it your primary weapon...The jab when used properly will win you a fight and make your nights easy...EG- Larry Holmes made a career out of a jab....
In time Cotto's jab assuming it keeps getting better like it has been will be one of the best actively in the game...IMO he is just starting to realize how effective and how much of an asset it really is
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
His jab is good and it's beneficial to what he does but it's not the best....but props for saying Wlad's is up there because it damn sure deserves to be.
I haven't seen Cotto ever throw a punch that he didn't mean to hurt someone with
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Well he is a southpaw convert in right , but now his Jab is like a really Damn shot , that conversion is going be ones of features that Margarito will face.......and advantage to Cotto....;D

Off the top of my head in no particular order...
PBF (sorry Danny)...Wright, Wlad, Taylor, just to name a couple....I am not going to make a list of everyone with a better Jab then Cotto's...
His jab is getting better and starting to become a factor....I already said that in other post in this thread

It's def. one of the best in the bizz.
Wladdys jab has to be up there.
Winkys slowed down a bit but it's there.
Calderons jab is so accurate.
Certainly Cottos jab is up there with those.
One of the best jabs I've seen that never get's mentioned is Junior Jones jab. My god was it lethal. Strong, precise and accurate.

Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
What makes Cotto's jab so impressive is not that's better than so many other fighters, but rather that it comes from a guy who fights low and is known for power and the left hook. He's a little like Frazier in that regard. Frazier had a very good jab for a guy who fights short. You expect a good jab from a slick boxer or a tall fighter. You don't expect it from Cotto.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Well i will say when ODLH was in his Prime and with his style before , he had a great Jab too , remembering the fight with Tito Trinidad that was a great fight with class of boxing......

Well personally i think Mikkel Kessler, Rafael Marquez, Jermain Taylor, Wladimir Klitschko, and Floyd Mayweather Jr when he uses it, all have better jabs than Cotto. But the best jab i've ever seen at Welterweight is Ike Quartey's it reminded me so much of Larry Holmes's jab, and also a close second is Hearns's famous flicker jab.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Yes it was, Quartey has one of my favorite jabs of all time.
Anyways, I would definitely consider Cotto's jab among the best which is amazing because I never saw the jab as a primary weapon until the Quintana fight. I think this goes to show how great of a fighter Cotto was. A lot of people with his type of power stop improving, Cotto has been improving ALL THE TIME and constantly tightening his defense and developing that jab which he cemented as one of the best in the Mosley bout.
And like you said, he might have P4P one of the more forceful and hard jabs in the business.
In no particular order and off my head I'd say the best current jabs in boxing belong to these bunch.
Wlad, Wright, Kessler, Mayweather, Rafael Marquez, Nonito, Cotto and Cunningham.
Other guys like Lamont Peterson, AJ Banal and Andre Ward have very good jabs but aren't at that level yet.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
I think he has the most powerful jab in the business p4p, but its not the best.. the list goes something like this
Wlad
Wright
Kessler
R. Marquez
ODLH(look at his fight against Mayorga)
Taylor(great jab)
Cotto
Mayweather(isn't as effective as it used to be, but its still very strong and fast and accurate)
The funny thing is both Wright and Kessler's jabs were pretty much nullified by Calzaghe and HOpkins compared how they normally work, but Kessler's really set up his right hand against Calzaghe, and Wright still controlled the distance at some points against Hopkins.
That being said I can't believe nobody has talked about Wright except Amat. I mean since 2005 he has dominated Trinidad with it, and he badly outjabbed both Taylor and Quartey in their encounters.

Oh sorry about that. You are the one who was at the press conference laughing at every little thing Floyd was saying, right? Your panties were getting moist with every breath he took. I remember you.
I also remember you were the one who ketp yelling like a little biatch at a Beatles Concert 'You're the man Floyd!' 'You're the man Floyd!' I wanna hold your hand, I wanna hold your hand!
;D
I bet if Floyd would have pulled down his drawers and told you to suck his stick you would have asked permission to brush your teeth first since you folks don't brush your teeth often.

I tell you right now both Cotto and Tony will smack Bitch Boy Floyd around plenty but we all know Floyd needs to grow some balls before that happens right? ;D

Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Relatively speaking... Cotto probably jabs harder than any current fighter. Plus it comes with good speed and is rarely off target.
I always viewed a jab as an irritant but Cotto's jab is close to sickening.

Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Cotto's Jab and left hook hybrib (half jab half hook) is amazing.
What is incredible is that he seems to have it so perfectly timed. Poor Gomez could not avoid it. He can be in a awkward position while moving out of the way of a shot, and still get that out there and smack it right into the guys face. It is fast and powerful. It really damages opponents.
I think Cotto has evolved into the most complete fighter alive today. He just does everything so well. He really does no wrong in there and his confidence is through the roof.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Cotto looked great...against a nobody. ODLH will look as good against another nobody. So yeah, cheers for both:rolleyes:.
Anyways, I did see Cotto a bit faster than in other fights. Liked his jab:cool:.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Cotto's jab def looked great against Gomez..
as just about all of these fighters have been mentioned already, Jermain Taylor's jab is ridiculous.. he just stops you in your tracks when he hits you with it.. Klitschko's jab is obviously one of the best.. DLH's is great, Kessler works everything off of his jab.. Winky's jab is one of his best punch's if not his best.. and of course Pretty Boy Floyd.. His right hand leads are definitely more effective, but when he feels that he's in control of the fight he'll unleash his jab, and it is a thing of beauty..
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
I didn't give my answer right away when I started the thread because I wanted to see what others had to say first.
I would rank Wlad's jab #1, both in terms of PFP power and how much he relies on it.
I think Taylor actually has the second most powerful jab in boxing, but he forgets about it for long stretches and doesn't use it nearly as much as he should.
I think Winky has the second most effective jab (behind only Wlad) in terms of how important it is to his style, but I put him a little behind Taylor/Cotto in terms of its power.
In the end, I'd rank them:
1. Wlad
2. Winky
3. Cotto
4. Taylor
5. Kessler
De La Hoya and Quartey both had great jabs, but Quartey is too inactive for me to rank him, and Oscar is fairly inactive, and his one recent fight "wasn't a night for the jab.":)
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
It doesn't have anything to do with how his jab looked against a "nobody", its been looking great lately in general, just watch the Mosley fight. He pretty much won that fight with his jab.
I'd say its top five, I wouldn't include Taylor just cause he's so inconsistent with it.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
I know he fights nobody's but Felix Sturm had one ridiculously powerful jab against Oscar. Everytime he landed it Oscars head would snap back. The great thing about Cotto's jab is that he steps in with it and really puts his legs into them. He turns a jab from a 5'7 guy into one that should belong on a 6 footer.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Cotto has a great jab...and is a lot faster than people anticipate, enough to beat floyd or even margarito, we'll see.
-
Re: Where does Cotto's left jab rank among active fighters?
Whether or not its the best of active fighters is certanly debatable and I'm not even gonna get into it.
But I have to say that is the very first time I see a fighter going down from a jab without it being a clear slip... That was awsome.

Check out Julio Cesar Chavez vs Parisi. A nice straight jab to the chin its all it took for him to sit on the canvas.

You know what, leave me out of your immature, lame a$$ retorts to Danny!!! I have never said a word to you, and I don't appreciate you using me in such a vile way!!!
And if after I have posted for almost 450 times, with a completely different posting style than Danny, and you actually believe that he would make up a dummy account to throw you off, then you are not 1 can short of a 6 pack, but 6 cans short. You may want to take an ice cream scoop, shove it up your nose into your empty cranial, and see if you can scrap any working brain cells from the walls of your skull. Everyone else here knows the difference, and knows that I'm no dummy!

Check out the 2nd knockdown in the Roy Jones vs Trinidad fight too. Roy knocked Tito down with a jab and Tito wasn't off balance. Crazy when you can knock someone down with a jab, thats power!
