My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
Boxing fans have varied opinions as to which fighters were the greatest of all-time. Younger fans prefer the modern fighters. Older fans prefer the old timers. Other fans have mixed and more diversified views.
Those who favor the modern fighters argue that the men have gotten bigger, faster, and stronger over the years. They also point out that techniques have improved with the passing of time.
Those who favor the fighters of the earlier years contend that the men grew up in tougher times and were "hungrier," more rugged, better disciplined, and better conditioned.
I do not believe that all fighters and athletes necessarily get better with the passing years. Athletes do get bigger, faster, and stronger over time. Techniques improve too. But, that does not mean they are better. Different periods of history impart certain attitudes and practices due to the "temper of the times" and the conditions under which the people live. Athletic skills are affected by mental conditioning and discipline as well as physical attributes and techniques. Consequently, performance peaks and ebbs in different periods of history and fighters are better in some periods than they are in others.
It is my definite belief that different periods of history produced better fighters than other periods, but the very best fighters of all-time from any era could fight with each other on a competitive and "near-equal" basis.

Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
It's a pretty good list in it's own right, but entirely omits almost all modern fighters. I mean you did say the very best of all time could compete with each other in any era. Don't think there have been any other great fighters recently?? I mean to not have Lewis or Holyfield under HW is a stretch imo. I guess it's not too bad if you want to define greatness as simply accomplishments on paper or stature, looking at it that way though the problem is that it is basically impossible for modern fighters to compete against ranked opposition as often as used to be the norm. The way fights are sanctioned and promoted these days just doesn't allow that kind of crazy activity that so many of those guys had, therefore it's not possible to rack up as MANY wins against good fighters these days. Noone will even have 100 fights aside from the most obscure journeyman these days, let alone more. Still, the only two fighters I spotted on any of those lists who have been active in the last fifteen years were Roy Jones and Pernell Whittaker, pretty obvious picks those. The pound for pound list is especially flawed in this sense, imo. It looks as though it was taken from a 1952 issue of Ring Magazines top 10 All time p4p list. It's very hard to even find any footage of the majority of those fighters. I mean guys like Jones Jr, Mayweather, Whittaker, could easily be LIGHTYEARS ahead of say, Charley Mitchell, and Stanley Ketchel in any feasable measure of ability. And I don't doubt they are. I mean would you like to tell me you think Jack Dempsey was a better pound for pound fighter than Roy Jones?
-
Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
I can appreciate different opinions, but all that tells me is that you are one of the many people who nuthugs the "old time" fighters.
-
Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
I think the lists are horrible - but fair play for the effort!

Exactly, and very good point. I cant understand people ranking guys who they maybe saw 1 or 2 fights of. You can't rank a guy from Newspaper clippings. If you do, Roy Jones would be p4p the greatest of all time.

As true as this is, neither of you have seen probably more then 3 or 4 between you so you can't discredit it either... Ya know?
You're kind doing what he is... In reverse;)

No, that wasn't directed towards you... I'm on your side...
I was saying you can tell alot about style power speed and chin by only seeing 2, 3 or 4 fights so if thats where you place guys thats where you place um...
My point was that most people have Jack Johnson in there top ten...
I garantee most people on here have not seen more then 2 or 3 of his fights TOPS!
So don't worry bout them;D

Not really, because NOBODY has seen enough footage of Jim Jeffries (and remember the guy only had what 20 fights?) to make the assesment that he is the greatest. I haven't said he isn't the greatest, I am saying I haven't seen enough to elevate him to being the greatest ever!
Having said that I do have a fair bit of knowledge about him aswell as Corbett, Sullivan, Johnson, Langford fitzsimmons etc

Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
Yeah I hear you loud and clear. My thing is this: I really respect the old time guys, they were cut from a tougher cloth and they paved the way for boxers today. They fought more, and they lived in tougher conditions.
But I really hate the bias that exists in a lot of boxing fans towards the old school guys. A lot of people speak as though the old guys were clearly superior, and that our generation's great would have been journeymen back then. Guys like Pernell, RJJ, Floyd Mayweahter, Hopkins, Toney, ect would have been great in any era. So when I see people dismissing the greats from the past 30 years or so in favor of the old timers who all we really have to go on is a few grainy news reels and newspaper clippings, that kind of irks me.
-
Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
No Hagler or Monzon at Middleweight? For Shame!!hehe
I Like Big H's list much better, Although I think Mayweather deserves a spot on the all time lightweight list. He was a monster at lightweight.

Oh, I totally agree... I am guilty of doing sometimes aswell... It's funny, I NEVER take peoples word on fighters today... I need to see em but I feel like these guys from the past you kinda have to... there's not really a choice.
-
Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
I don't know mate those list are a bit off even for old timer's... but I guess it is all opinion but I really don't see it?....Jefferies over Johnson?...Johnson beat Jim silly and has wins over Sam McVea, Ketchal, Tommy Burns, Jack O'Brien, Langford, and was greatly skilled...And I have seen just about ever bit of Footage on Johnson available...
I am glad to see Bob Fitzimmons on the list though...I will be honest it is hard to decide exactly what weight class Bob belongs in but it is not MW...though he personally was a MW in natural size give or take a few pounds he fought above...And he has a hell of a resume considering most his big wins are all over bigger men...
It is interesting to say the least

Yeah thats really bad IMO. Those are the top 2 MWs EVER imo. And why does Jones get in on the top 10 MWs? Jones is an ATG no doubt but Middleweight isn't exactly the weight everyone remembers him at

Yeah the only fight of Jeffries I saw was his comeback against Johnson where he took a crazy beating, and thats really not an accurate display of what he was capable of.
From what I read he was extremely athletic though. Its a real shame we don't have high quality, HBO broadcasts of these guys ;D

the middleweight rankings are just flat out bizarre. ;D
No Hagler, no Monzon, but in a list dominated by older fighters, Roy Jones?

THas about all I have seen of Jefferies myself is the Johnson fight....I posted the johnson/Jefferies vid just to get a little more footage of Jack not to make Jim look bad lol

1g5a22,
It's too bad your banned now, but I guess were better off this way.
Was wondering how many Greb fights you had seen?
Also the fact that you don't have 'Escopeta' on your Middleweights list makes me throw up. :-\

Just stumbled across the old thread & it is one of the most interesting lists thet the OP has compiled.
Whilst I have a different opinion to the OP, I think his list is more then worthy of discussion.

You're*
And if ANYONE was going to compile a list of great anything I'm certain Mick would know ALL about it, he's on the cutting edge of whichever way the wind is blowing and he's supported fighters & football clubs since birth....hey, all he has ever seen is winners....that's why he's Mick, he's a winner, it's all he does....That Soviet wrestler Aleksandr Karelin, he was Mick's favorite! Felix Savon...that's Mick's favorite amateur heavyweight boxer, though he still has room to love Tefilo Stevenson & Laszlo Papp...Mick also loves UConn's women basketball team, the UCLA Bruin basketball team (as coached by John Wooden), The San Fransisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, & Pittburgh Steelers, The New York Yankees, The Montreal Canadians, & Bobby Fischer.
Mick, you make me sick

Good solid list from a more historical perspective. Only one problem with the entire list.
He put Roy Jones Jr. in the top ten of the MW, but not Hagler? :-\

Re: My Greatest Boxers Of All Time(some Of U Wont Like This)!
Im 100% certain that most people who compile these lists over several weight classes pre-populate most of them out of obligation.
I dont know how anyone has got the front to knock the guy.
Anyway, pointless arguement, the guys banned. Lets all just enjoy Lyle firing the fuck gun into Mick for his shameless glory hunting ways ;D
