What do you guys think?
I think this would be a relatively even match-up at this stage of both of their careers, Collazo only has a bad record IMO because he stepped up much earlier than Berto.

Killersheep you read my mind the last few days i have been saying Berto needs to fight someone like Collazo, who isn't top Welterweight but is good enough to test him then we can see what kind of level Berto is at. Not really sure how Berto will deal with Collazo's slickness but Collazo isn't big puncher plus his out put is very low as well which will hurt him against Berto. I think Collazo will give Berto fits for about 4 rounds but once Berto starts to really lay down the pressure Collazo won't be able to cope IMO, and i can actually see Berto stopping Collazo late on.
Collazo is very under rated, the Hatton fight could have gone his way and he was injured during the Molsey fight, he is a former World Champ who has won and defended the WBA Belt, albeit against not the toughest out there, he has been stopped once in his career but he will certainly give Berto a great fight.
Off the top.......I think Collazo,Boxing in peak form could Beat Berto.Berto would have to make it a facefirst Issue. He has shown Niiice hand speed power in last couple (Berto) and could hurt Collazo Early but needs to develope some gears to live at top teir Imo.Collazo needs to find some activity level.
I was shocked that Hatton could not walk down Collazo like Rivera was able to do for a good portion of his bout with Collazo. Collazo had the faster feet versus Hatton and that kept him out of a lot of trouble imo. Collazo is a good boxer just has no punching power and he can't fight on the reverse which is where I think Berto would have him. He would give him some problems with his slickness and accuracy but would eventually be run down imo. I know it was a long time ago but Rivera gave Collazo hell on the ropes which is where I think they would end up. Would definitely favor Berto here.
I think Berto by late stoppage. I see his power being the difference.
I have to go with Berto too, I think it would be a good match-up & Collazo would cause some problems but I think Berto would start to overwhelm Luis at the later stages.
Collazo by stoppage.
He pretty much beat up Hatton and he was doing fine with Mosely until he broke his hand.
I can see him frustrating Berto and taking him out late on.
Ive always put that down to motivation.. The hatton fight was bigger.. he had the motivation.. He was in tip top shape.. he had the rivera, gonzalez fights behind him title fight experience.. it was his defense.. he wasnt the challenger and he fought like the champ..
I actually cant believe people are writing off collazo against berto..
Honestly it takes 5 - 8 rounds til collazo breaks him down and stops him..
He's slick.. good chin.. Berto would make it close.. that little bit faster but collazo is that little bit slicker.. better counter puncher.. and for 3 rounds you'd see them both punching off eachothers punches.. and nothing in the rounds.. then collazo's work to the body would start to break berto down..
i totally agree with that ..
Lou needs to start fighting more often..
Where he's at now.. hes having a bit of a shit time.. Cos hes been at this top level.. and he wants to fight often.. but against the right competition.. he doesnt want these bums and nobody is fighting him..
He fought the hatton fight and the sugar shane fight.. and he needs to be back in the mix..
He had the fight with clottey all set up.. Clottey pulls out.
He was sposed to fight on the undercard of tito - jones against jorge linares' brother.. linares pulled out with an injury i think..
So he fights the dos santos barros guy at short notice for barros and shuts him out.. real skillful performance btw :)
.. And barros isnt any sort of contender but hes a pretty good guy.. he was one of cotto's chief sparring partners for the malignaggi fight and hes had some good experiance better then his record would sujest
Geezus Christ!... People are underrating Collazo... If you people think Berto is stopping Collazo you're out of your mind...
Hope this helps
That is a perfect test for Berto. I also would like to see him in with Josh Clottey. That would be a great action fight.
Dont get me wrong berto is real good right now and hes really up and coming but i dont even think josh clottey is any good for him right now either.. He bangs to hard in my opinion..
This is the problem for a prospect at welterweight.. there really arent enough fights for them.. Its all MEN LOL:D No boys.. Im half joking there but you can see what i mean.. to stick berto in with anyone witha title would be pretty harsh..
I mean the biggest and best fights for him right now are still fights with guys like julio (Although is he doing his 154 thing now?).. Or even an undercard fight with alfonso gomez..
Im not even sure i would stick him in with Quintana.. I would say thats a sweet fight for him before this last williams fight.. but now man.. i see carlos stopping a bro..
Speaaking of quintana i just got a little news about my boy luis collazo..
I keep in touch a bit with lou's pr guy Ed Rosa n he tells me Lou is currently in camp helping paul williams out with sparring for the rematch! ;):)
Which is wicked news.. Keeping sharp and fit with no fights scheduled..
I think both fighters beat Berto, but he needs to step un in class. Right now, he's rated in the top ten and he needs to fight a top 10 fighter so we know if he belongs there. Even if he losses it will be a learning experience for him because I haven't scene any improvement in his last few fights. Maybe Rodriguez can push him a little. So far, he's just powering his way through C grade fighters. Alvarez would be a good fight for him, too.
Against Clottey he would need to outbox him, because Clottey is stronger. Against Collazo, he would be up against a more skilled, slicker guy. Either way, he would have to adapt his game or lose. Personally I think he's a bit overrated.
Thank you... People are talking like Collazo is this journeyman gate keeper... He was a world champ last year... People are talking like Berto would have the ability to outbox Joshua Clottey... Berto has never come close to a guy like Clottey in the ring, a grizzled seasoned vet who can bang and back Berto way up...
Sorry POB but i disagree although Collazo maybe be a good slick fighter, he hasn't got power nor has he got high activity level. I think there is a decent chance of Berto stopping Collazo depending on how well he closes the distance and how quickly in the fight.
THat's ridiculous. His activity level was good against Hatton because Hatton came forward the entire fight, almost stubbornly so. Collazo is a good slick counterpuncher, who will eat up your average come forward type. The only reason Ricky didn't take more punishment in that fight is because of his own activity. Stylistically Hatton was a very good opponent for Collazo to look good against, especially since it was his first fight at welter. I think Mosley even took that fight as a blueprint to do better against Collazo. If you hadn't noticed, Mosley was almost hesitant to come forward against Collazo, though it is in his style, he was far more of a counter puncher in that fight than he has been in most of his bouts. I don't think it really matters whether Collazo really did hurt his hand or not, Shane had him figured out by the mid rounds anyways. Berto is more of an accurate one punch type fighter than Hatton is, and he has a fairly big frame for a welter. Don't get me wrong I think Collazo would be a great test for Berto, but I think Andre takes this one handily as it get's to the later stages. He just would need to fight smart and pick his spots, which from everything I've seen he already does well.
Collazo is better than a journeyman gatekeeper, but he isn't on the level with the Big Three at WW. Who has he beat? His whole reputation is based on giving a natually much small man who struggles against southpaws, Hatton, a hard time. I'm not that impressed with Clottey, either. He's a physical speciman and he can crack, but he's limited. He's been in tougher than Berto for sure, but I see his win over Chico as more about Chico being shot that Clottey being that good. Yeah, he looked good against Tony until he hurt his hand, but his whole reputation is based on that loosing effort.
Listen, I don't believe the Berto hype yet, but they guy is ranked high in by several of the alphabet organizations. He's the #1 WBC contender, believe it or not. Fightnews actually has him rated higher (how I don't know) than both Clottey and Collazo. It's not unreasonable to consider putting him in with Collazo or Clottey. Maybe he can step up his game against better competition. Maybe not. We aren't going to learn much by him fighting Rodriguez, and if he wins that fight he becomes the manditory for Mayweather's WBC belt. And since Floyd will vacate that tricket before he wastes his time on Berto, the guy ought to fight a legit top ten opponent before the WBC belt falls out of the sky into his lap, and if that happens, Collazo will be his manditory defense.
Well first of Hatton forced Collazo to fight secondly Hatton wasn't putting effective pressure on Collazo. His punches were sloppy and they had no snap on them he wern't picking his spots, plus Hatton wasn't able to bully Collazo. Berto is bigger and stronger than Hatton at Welterweight and has the power to make Collazo more cautious and lower his activity level, plus he has the power to stop Collazo unlike Hatton, plus he has the size to bully Collazo on the inside.
Well all in all I think this would be an excellent match-up like I said on the first post. It is a winnable fight by both men, they have both been on HBO and they would both be a good name on the resume for each fighter.
End of rant.
Yeah, no dout that either Clottey or Collazo would be a good fight... I mean, I just feel that Berto gets beat by both.
People are talking stoppage and it could happen but I think it unlikely. I am not a Collazo fan but people brush him aside like he's a nobody. I know that you're not nessesarily, Sheep, I'm just saying... He was a world champ and defended his title...
I think Clottey would Knock Berto the Fuck OUT...
Just my oppinion though
Cheers
So surely that shows that if he had to fight Berto's fight, he would be able to adapt. If he can match Hatton's activity level, i'm sure he can match Berto's?
And i think his hand injury was of importance in the Mosely fight. It was 1 round a piece when he broke his hand. At that point Mosely was struggling to cope with Collazo's straight right hand. It landed at will throughout the 2nd round. When he hurt it, he stopped throwing it.....which enabled Shane to take control of the fight. I can't imagine anybody hanging with Shane with a broken hand.
Still if Berto was to beat him, i'd hold my hands up and admit you're right. Guess we'll just have to wait and see....if it happens.
Collazos skilled I actually think if he comes in 100% focused and with the right mind set I can see him outboxing Berto to a UD.
It's just too bad for the injuries he's suffered that have held him back.
2 fights in 06

I think Collazo might be to crafty for Berto right now
I think people are under estimating Berto, I mean Cotto went through much deeper waters against Ricardo Torres and Demarcus Corley before he even started touching guys like Collazo, but now he is on top of the world, I think Berto is bound to be a top 5 p4p in the next few years, and is definitely the hardest hitting legitimate prosect, not to mention he pretty fast to. So basically what I am saying is that I feel that Collazo can't hurt Berto, I don't think he can keep up with Berto pace wise, and he would be the perfect measuring stick because nobody has given Berto even a close fight.
The more I think on it I like this one but Berto has faced nothing close to a Corley or Torres at there respected points Vs.Cotto.He Has shown Improvment with handspeed and some accuracy but is jumping into the deep end without going through some top tier acid test's, respect to Perinial Rivera and Tough Estrada. Southpaw solid mover and hitter like Collazo whole nother level when in top form.
Corley wasn't anything by the time Cotto fought him, and he continues to be punching bag judging by what Devon did to him. I think Collazo is a fine stepping stone for Berto because he has no punching power. He was overwhelmed by Mosley, and Berto would do the same thing. I am not saying Collazo isn't a good proffesional, I am just saying that Berto doesn't have a whole lot of stepping stones left between him and guys like Collazo, Judah, etc.
i think almost anyone would look shot or bad if they have an injury and cant perform 100%. if this fight were to take place and both fighters were in tip top shape i would have to say Collazo will win this and probably by a UD. if he is hurt or gets hurt during the fight maybe Bertos activity level will win him the mayority of the rounds. i guess what im saying is it all depends on Collazo at this point. Maybe next year or two i might be singing a diferent song but for now Collazo wins.
