Who Should Oscar Face?
OK, let's try to assume for a second that this Mayweather retirement is genuine, who should Oscar face? Hatton has already declined so I excluded him. I tried to include everyone I could think of that he would logically face. Thought about including Spinks but then I would have to include Phillips, Forrest and that bunch and didn't want to go that route though a Spinks fight would not surprise me at all.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
I wouldn't mind seeing another Mosley fight - both are at similar points in their careers, so it would be pretty much for old times' sake. Only for entertainment value.
I think Mosley has a bit more to offer, though.
Other than that, Mora wouldn't be a horrible choice - it beats Forbes ;D
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
I voted for an Oscar Vs. Mora match.
Mora just shined big and the momentum would help sell tickets. Besides De La Hoya just beat Forbes and everyone else in the poll would prob hand Oscar his ass. I think he could beat Mora.

Are you kidding me? I think Cotto is the only one on the list with a CHANCE to "hand Oscar his ass", and even then it's highly unlikely it wouldn't be ultra competitive unless Oscar get's too old or can't make the weight.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
Actually I think the welterweight division is so strong that I would favor a good chunk of those guys against De La Hoya. Certainly not Mora, but Wright, Mosley and Cotto I wouldn't hesitate to pick. Williams is a tough call, would give Oscar the benefit of the doubt as I just have no clue how they would match up without watching them. Gut feeling is Oscar though. That may not be a good chunk but whatever.
I can't believe people actually want to see him face Mora. OK one of them is Danny_G, but still. I feel Oscar fighting Mora would be like the US talking to Iran, it would validate his career.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
I honestly believe He will in fact be fighting Mayweather after mutual visions of crisp cash gets the better of Mayweather's "Retirement"...If not it will have to be a biggie,Mosley 3....erm,I could see it.I think Wright would beat Oscar.I can not see him Fighting Mora...why?The winner of Cotto VS.Margarito...(remember folks, these two have yet to fight ;))
My real wish is that he would stick to Promoting full time and step aside at this point.;D

Well firstly I wouldn't expect Oscar to make Welterweight to fight anyone, any potential opponent would probably meet him at a catchweight of 150 or higher. Wright, who knows how much he has left at this point having not fought since Hopkins, and looking sluggish then. Could've been the weight but then again, it could be just as much of a problem for him coming back down. Mosley, I honestly don't think would beat Oscar at this point in time. I think everyone overestimates what he has left because he gave Cotto such a close fight. Don't see any reason Mosley would do better than he did in the rematch against Oscar, unless of course DLH had to make 147. Like I said, Cotto is the only one I'd favour, and even then Oscar has a great chance with his jab and left hook.

Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
It got to be Cotto...if Floyd actually stays retired, but I have to agree with Spicoli there...
People come on, Mora... Seriously...

Winky would hand Oscar his ass. FACT. He is bigger, more skilled, and would take the Golden Boy into his Golden Years.

I agree with that completely in theory, but who knows how Winky's aged body would handle going from 170 to 154. That could be ugly, and if he was extremely drained from making the weight things could get interesting. I wouldn't want to see Winky take too many left-hooks to the body.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
Everyone acts like Oscar is going to go one without aging........ He is no spring Chicken.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
I voted for Winky, he has just been passed over so much in his career, I think win or lose he deserves the big payday.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
Winky has missed his chance, it has to be the winner of Cotto V Margarito at catchweight. I don't believe that PBF has totally wimped out and retired permanently so i expect that fight to happen this year anyway.

Of course he WOULD have, based on any form he showed at 54 or 160 over the last five years.... But he last fought at 170, having put on the muscle, been in a fairly rough physical fight with Hopkins and then has been entirely inactive for almost a year since. Like CFH said, who the hell knows how he'd handle dropping down to 154, where he hasn't fought in quite some time. And of course Oscar isn't going to fight him at middle. I doubt DLH would fight Wright at all honestly, just doesn't seem like one he wants... But if he does, I'd bet it's because he knows Winky won't be able to make 54 and be himself. That leaves Margarito, Williams, Mosley, and possibly the winner of Judah Clottey as likely opponents for DLH. All very winnable fights for Oscar(besides Cotto, which is still winnable) imo.

And who the hell besides Danny G and Diane picked Sergio Mora??

Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
Personally, I would like to see him fight the winner of Cotto/Margarito. It would be the most hypeable match. And a great way to keep Oscar fighting the best.
Here's how I think he would fair against everyone:
vs Cotto: Cotto by stoppage. Cotto would bust him up inside and be too strong/crafty. If he was able to hit Mosley at will, he would do a number on De La Hoya. Cotto can fight backing up and coming forward, southpaw and right-handed, he's just all around SCARY.
vs Margarito: This would be a better match up for Oscar than Cotto IMO. Margarito would take what Oscar has to give but return fire even worse. Margarito only knows how to go forward, but Oscar is a good counter-puncher so the style would mix very well. I wouldn't be surprised if Oscar won here though. But if Margarito gets past Cotto, I would pick him over De La Hoya.
vs Wright: Usually, I would pick Wright to box circles around De La Hoya, but due to his aging and inactivity, I see Oscar winning now. Give Winky a tune-up fight, then he wins a lopsided UD.
vs Shane Mosley: I don't think they should fight again. Shane can still compete with the best in his division. At this stage in their careers, I don't see much changing. Mosley UD.
vs Paul Williams: Williams is too active and too long for De La Hoya. Williams would make Oscar look bad.
vs Sergio Mora: Take this off the list! No one would want to see this! Oscar by UD though.
vs Steve Forbes: Just when I thought Mora would be the worst idea here, Forbes would be even worse.
At this stage in his career, Oscar would lose most of these fights. A prime De La Hoya, would be a different story. If he want's that final victory against a name, he should fight Pacquiao or Hatton. Everyone would think those fights as complete BS, but Oscar did fight Forbes so anything is possible with him.

Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
I went for Winky.
It's logical...Winky's been looking for a fight...Winky beat 2 guys that beat Oscar and fought a close one with his third conquerer...Winky's been up as far as Light Heavy...
Oscar could kill three birds with one stone.
1)Make money in a fight in which he won't get hurt.
2)Have an opportunity off redeeming himself for the Mosely, trinidad and Hopkins losses
3)Fighting a man his own size:p

that would be a cap to his legacy if he could beat winky. though i seriously doubt he could.

I did. The safest fight and probably 1 of the 3 top money showdown from the fighter's on the list. I used to think Winky would be perfect but he is just too big for Oscar now IMO. Cotto Margarito winner would be my next pick.

Hell, bite the bullet and fight Cotto... All you're getting is older and softer.

I voted for Margo. It's been a while since I've seen Oscar hit the canvas from agonizing liver shot pain.

Well there goes my anonymity in voting for a Steve Forbes rematch :-\
It was the tagline that got me.
Though that was an pretty impressive performance by Forbes.

Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
Call me crazy but after looking at Mora the other night I actually think him and Oscar would be an interesting match up.
DLH is not dropping down to 147 and truth be told other then a payday no one there needs him.
At this stage in the game other then the fact his name on your resume and the payday he will give for fighting him he holds no real value in the sport.
I wish he would retire and stick to his promotion company and singing career

I hope Oscar goes for Cotto . Miguel will be the man to beat once he stops Margarito . I dont think Oscar wants someone that dangerous though . He may offer Ricky more money and and offer he cant turn down .

Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I voted for Mora.
OK, here me out. It would be a very fast turn around for either Cotto or Margo to fight a potential war in July, then turn around and face Oscar two months later. I know I can be done, but it could be a little soon. The winner of that fight is probably going to need a little time off after that battle. Because of this, I'm ruling out Cotto and Tony. I would love to see him fight these guys at another time, but they aren't my choice for his Sept 20 date.
That leaves Mosley and Mora. Really, I could go for either fight, but we've seen younger, better versions of Oscar and Shane clash. I would be chance for Oscar to redeem himself and avenge the controversial decision. This fight would certainly make sense and I nearly voted for it.
Mora, on the other hand, is a legit belt holder at 154. None of the other belt holders have the name recognition or could sell as many tickets as Mora. It's a great story. Contender champion to world champion to fighting this generation's more popular boxers. It's great drama. I'm loathed to say it, but because he is stylistically awkward and a bigger man, he presents a bit of a challenge, at least more than Forbes. Mora could do some things to make the fight interesting. Rematching Mosley would be more dangerous and if Oscar wants to go out with a belt around his waste, Mora is the ticket. Also if Oscar fight Mosley and looses, it probably takes away from a potential mega fight with Cotto next year - hmmm, maybe on Cinco de Mayo?
Again, I can't believe I'm writing this, but Mora would be a very smart choice to fill the Sept 20 date. He's available, he's recognizable, and you can sell this fight big. Then Oscar can look to the Cotto/Tony winner if he wants one last megafight.
-
Re: Who Should Oscar Face?
Cott0 v Margarito winner for 2 reasons:
1.)The winner of that fight deserves a big $$$ fight which will increase their popularity/exposure.
2.)I'm confident and would sig/rep bet anyone on this site that Cotto and Margarito would wreck Oscar. And the fight would be at a catch weight I think. I don't buy all this Oscar is too dangerous for those 2.
Cotto would break his body. And Margarito, well,if you gas in glorified sparring sessions v Floyd after 7 rounds, what are you going to do if you're on your toes boxing/running from a wrexking machine that throws 100 plus power punches per round. I also think at this stage in his career,Oscar has a decent jab, left hand and not much else. His combinations v Forbes were pitty patty.
