:( BBC SPORT | Boxing | Calzaghe dismisses Pavlik fight
He obviously wants one last big payday and he wants to retire undefeated. Can't blame him really.
I think he'd beat Pavlik but he probably think's he can beat Jones easier and get paid more for doing it.
I'd love to see Jones turn back the years and put on a show though. :D
I thought Pavlik already called him out last saturday.:-\Quote:
I'm not sure if Pavlik really wants to face me at the moment.
I think Enzo advised his boy not fight the Ghost.
he knows he'll get KNFO and lose his undefeated record. Disapointed in slapper
Exactly
Jones will mean a bigger payday for an easier nights work and will gain JC that 1 vital big name he needs on his CV to acheive greatness.
I would be surprised to see RJJ get anything from that eventual fight as the trinidad fight clearly showed his best days are long gone.
But fighting infront of 50,000+ can do strange things and who`s to say jones jr wont turn the clocks back 5 years and give us another vintage performance.
This is controversial, particularly if one remebers that Calzaghe claimed Steve Collins ducked him at the end of his career.
Okay, I`m starting to dislike Joe. Just admit you don't want the fight and go on about your business. Say you think RJJ is a better fight for you, and I'll agree. Tryin to say it is because Pavlik isn't ready for him and he is so much better?..blah blah fookin blah.
okay joe. I shall respond with..WHATEVER YOU GIANT PUSSY.
Bawk. Bawk. Bawk.
I generally feel like acting more respectful, but he just doesn't deserve it with these sort of remarks.
That's a shame - Calzaghe/Pavlik would have been an interesting fight.
I can't say I wouldn't be surprised if Roy won, but I don't think it'll be as easy as Joe thinks.
If JC was to claim he was no longer able to make 168 then of course this fight would have to be completely thrown out of the window.
Know i`ll get bashed for this but kelly does seem like the kind of guy who could struggle at 168.
The logistics are far more complexed and he`s all out aggression would have to be replaced by a more settled approach whereby he has to think before he throws his punches.
JCs knockdown to bhop was a flash knockdown that never had calzaghe in any danger, Taylor genuinely hurt pavlik in that 1st fight and missed a golden opportunity to have pavlik out of there.
Had he of done so there would of been no calls for a rematch after a 2nd round KO and pavlik would now be in the wastelands of the division scrapping against average fighters for little money.
Don't you guys all think RJJ is shot or way past it ?? I mean all he done was beat Tito (Who was shot) and yet everybody is commending him and thinks he could beat Calzaghe.
I guess Joe didn't like the look of Gary when he came back.
I think it came down to him preferring to chase down Jone's older legs over having Pavlik chasing down his own older legs.
Yeah this is dissapointing (as a calzaghe fan) I can understand he wants that one big last payday and also would want to end his career in wales rather than vegas but coming out saying pavlik doesn't want to fight him I thinks off the mark. You can understand his reasoning its just a shame for boxing wouldv'e been a great match.
JC is an unbeaten 36 year old that is almost about to retire as an unbeaten multi weight world champion.
Can you honestly blame him for not wanting no part of kelly pavlik who not 5 days ago beat the living daylights out of his sparring partner inside 3rounds???
He says in the article about maybe a fight in future, but who seriously expects him to fight on past the end of the year?
To me it sounds like his desire has gone and he just wants one last payday, and that all important big name on his resume!
I like Calzaghe, and was believing he's starting to do what he should of many years ago and take on the best over in the States. But this seems like the easier option.
I understand his reasoning. He'll get more money and not get his face mashed in in the process.
If Calzaghe not will fight Palvik,so let Kessler fight him after the Sartison fight,i will love to see Kessler vs Palvik
One big YAWN to this threads comments. People claiming they are starting to dislike Joe??? When did you LIKE Joe? after his Kessler win? That likeness lasted hmmmmmmm 2 fights. Fickle wankers
At Calzaghe's age - it's inevitable his ablity is diminishing, in particular, crap hands have robbed him of power.
He shouldn't even be contemplating fighting ANOTHER young prime guy. So should definitely sign out with the old boys. If not Roy, even Woods and the like is fair.
If the Pavlik fight happens, win or lose, everyone should commend him (with victory.. it will be claimed he ducked Jones and went for the easy option though. Fact).
If Hopkins could catch Joe in the first round with a right hand and drop him Pavlik would find right hand after right hand and destroy him.Don't be surprised if Jones beats him.
It's obvious Pavlik's massacre of Lockett made Calzaghe think twice.
Yawn, Jones is past it, pointless fight to me.
Im dissapointed that Calzaghe doesnt want to try and go out with a bang. Beating the young and powerful Pavlik would be the ultimate seal on his career. Outoworking an old Jones Jr who has been nailed repeatedly in recent years would be a let down.
Im not impressed by this.
I agree with you mate, I want to see Calzaghe fight Pav, I would not mind if he lost either because I think Pavlik is great for the sport and I love watching him fight.
Joe has taken risks in his last few fights (which is what everyone wanted afterall) so I don't think he deserves a bashing in this instance, thats all.
From a legacy point of view of course Calzaghe wants to face Roy Jones.
If he fights and beats him then he's beaten America's best fighter of the past 20 years in Jones, and the most dominant in Hopkins.
You guys who say that Pavlik would be a bigger fight or a better name on his resume are deluded.
The only way Pavlik would be a big name is if he BEAT Joe.
If Calzaghe fights Pavlik and wins, then all Pavlik did was beat Taylor and defend against a nobody in Gary Lockett. His legacy won't be that impressive in hindsight so Calzaghe won't gain much from the victory.
People have already dismissed his wins over Lacy, Kessler and Hopkins so why would it be any different if he beat Pavlik?
Like everyone here I'd love to see the fight, but clearly it makes far more sense for Joe to fight the biggest superstar in boxing of the past 20 years even if he is past his best.
Jones is a first ballot hall of famer, a boxing legend and a name that is guaranteed to go down in history.
Pavlik, if he lost to Calzaghe, would merely have been a belt holder.
It's a no brainer for Joe.
Its the final time. I dont think Hopkins was a risk fight really. Kessler was a risk though. Its the last time ever....go out with a bang and go down fighting if it need be. Thats what I would like to see Joe doing.
Fighting Jones Jr. is pointless. Jones is a legend but lost as many as he has won in recent years and lost them more decisively.
To beat Pavlik at this stage in his career would be very special.
Lockett is a decent fighter (not on Pavliks level but he is a tough guy) but yeah, if I was Joe at his stage of his career I would think twice too. If i was in Joe's shoes I would fight Pavlik, but in this day and age, for some stupid reason, fighters with unbeaten records are more important. Which is bullshit and ruins boxing
Bilbo, what are you on about now ? ;D Seriously.
Legacy wise a win would have been huge over Jones if he actually had any legs and didn't look almost completely shot. I don't know, maybe there are some who will still think this would be some kind of big win. The fact that pretty much everyone here accepts that Pavlik would be a tougher fight says something though.
But the bigger problem with this post is you act like Pavlik is going to retire after the Calzaghe fight.
"If Calzaghe fights Pavlik and wins, then all Pavlik did was beat Taylor and defend against a nobody in Gary Lockett. His legacy won't be that impressive in hindsight so Calzaghe won't gain much from the victory."
Is he never going to fight again  You have no idea what Pavlik will accomplish after the Calzaghe fight. He may go on to have a few more good/great wins and legacy wise it will have just been that he lost to a better more experienced fighter in Calzaghe. And Calzaghe will be seen as having a very good win at the end of his career over a young, stong, prime fighter. Or maybe not, the point is you and I have no idea what Pavlik is going to do so to say that Calzaghe would have beat a guy who only beat Taylor is bizarre.
And the win over Lacy has been diminished because for one it was just such a mismatch (not the case with Kessler and Hopkins and hence they haven't been diminished as much) and two Lacy has looked horrible his last two fights against lesser opposition, give or take a shoulder problem.
I translated all that to mean, pavlik hits way to hard and is too big of a risk at this point in my career. Not sure if i can blame him, win or loose seems like a night with pavlik would be way tougher than jones right now.
i agree most of us would. I just think joe see's a big name guy closer to his own age not quite the fighter he was it's just a safe fight that will make him some much deserved bank that just screws us the fans out of the best fight available. But like i said i can't really really blame him. I just wish he would have done all this fight the states best stuff years ago.
Quote from Rocky Balboa-
"Everybody nowadays think they have a god damned legacy..."
Joe won't have to worry about that.
He can just buzzsaw throught the weak/old/shopworn opposision.
in 50 years you won't even hear his name.
Retire.
I've said right from the beginning of this rumored Calzaghe/Pavlik fight that it would never happen. Enzo would never let it happen. And I stated right from the beginning that it was the right thing to do. RJJ is the right fight for Joe. Or someone similar. But the only one deluded here with this statement is Calzaghe. Is it really necessary for him to slag on Pavlik and his lack of readiness to fight him as the reason? Not at all. I think most fans would understand and except for many reasons.
I wouldn't be calling him a chicken shit if he didn't think it was somehow important to dog on another fighter who has a ton of class, and skill...to make an excuse for not making the fight. What a bullshit chicken ass statement. He didn't need to say anything, just..."I'm fighting RJJ, come watch." And it would be good. Yea, I did respect him, but now I''m starting to think him a chicken ass. It sounds like the kinda justification dick sucking of Margo that Citron did to explain his ass whooping. How Cotto would lose. Only diff. here is, Joe is blowing himself as an excuse.
