Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Did anyone else hear that Williams was willing to fight Pavlik, BUT ONLY if his purse would be 2.5 million?!
In my opinion, Williams is no way near supposed to earn that much! AND why the hell should Pavlik take the bottom end of the stick?! Now I would hope this happens and Williams could get blasted into oblivion!
Any one else have thoughts on this?

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Williams doesn't deserve that much but he realizes his meat and potatoes are at 147 right now. You'd need to pay him that much to consider bumping up 2 weight classes where no one knows if he'd be a threat and he'd look a lot more like an ordinary fighter (with long arms). He could give Pavlik problems if he could keep up the workrate he beat Margarito with, but Kelly is THE chin tester and that low left arm of Williams, same as Jermain Taylor's reeks of disaster. I say it would look largely like the first Taylor match-up except instead of Williams putting it on his heel he gets smacked down in the center of the ring.

Yeah, it looked something like this: :foruml10gc5:
Williams must know 1/2 of that purse he wants would go towards restructuring his face and buying a blood bank. The last thing Kelly needs right now is to fight a guy coming up 2 weight classes. Lockett I'll give him; Mora is kind of stretching it in terms of building his legacy, and fighting Williams is just ruining everyting he's done to this point IMO. Let Williams test the waters 1st and see in a couple of years.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
...the whole idea is just plain silly. I give him props for the dumb idea though. Williams is once again going after the fighters that everyone else avoids. Probably better is williams offers to arm-wrestle him instead. Probably have a better chance.
-
Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Hopefully Williams can hurry up and get a bout in against Cotto before he has to move up to 154. After that, I have to agree once he gets to 160 he should fight a couple bums before taking on Pavlik.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
WTF? He's just talking shit, he would probably get in there against Wlad if the price was right....

No kidding. This is one of the oldest things in boxing.... calling out an opponent and naming a price that you know you're never going to get.
I remember when Roy Jones said he'd fight Lennox Lewis..... if they paid him $100 million.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
I would also get in the ring with Pavlik for 2.5 million. Just in case Mr. Arum is reading. Hell yeah
Anyways, this is nonsense would never happen and rightfully so. I see no way Williams could win. I think the first person to give Pavlik trouble is going to be the person who moves laterally on him. JT tried a little bit it just didn't come natural to him. Someone like Spinks maybe or one day Giovanni Lorenzo. But right now I simply don't think there is anybody who beats Kelly Pavlik at middleweight. It's a fairly weak division and it's my belief that Pavlik beats all comers. I look at the division and I literally can not find a single person that could possibly give him some trouble and make a bid for the upset.
Closest I came was Lorenzo who does a lot of side to side movement and makes you work inside on him to get the job done but he doesn't use the ring real well and traps himself in corners a lot, Pavlik would have a field day. Spinks is a tough fight for anybody and would definitely take some rounds from Pavlik imo but he gets consistently broken down over the second half of nearly half of every fight and he has a bad chin.
Until he moves to 168 or someone else comes along, my guess is Pavlik stays undefeated for a long time.

I would too. Hell I'd do it for much less than that. I would probably say something about wrapping him in a cocoon of horror at the press conference.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
SweetPea reminded me of something...
Anyone remember Jorge Paez saying he'd be willing to fight Mike Tyson for 10 mill?
That shit was funny it was in an interview for a sports show.
-
Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Dan Rafael reported that the entire purse of Pavlik's last fight was 2.5 million and thus Williams offer was essentially a fake offer.

That wasn't a serious offer. Roy knew there was no chance of him beating Lennox and said something insane and impossible to indicate how insane and impossible making that fight would be.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Test him if u think he aint real. Tired of all the talk. If Paul aint real the I want to see the winner of Margo-Cotto test Paul. But u Know what, they wont. They criticize Floyd for avoiding a fight for big money but watch them do the same to Paul. Tired of all the talk prove it in the ring against PAUL WILLIAMS and see what happens. PROVE IT IN THE RING. At this point he is consider the # 2 or 3 best WW in the world but he has to beg for a fight against the best. COWARDS. Boxing is all POLITICAL. Cotto vs De la hoya. Margo vs de la hoya. Margo is the man but he did not win vs paul. Mayweather did it but everyone wanted his head for it. Dont show ur true colors u losers.I am angry now, so if u want to think u are the best Floyd, Cotto,Margo, test TALL PAUL and watch. Thats right, Im crying now, so what, u Punks wont dare and Test(ME)

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
I dont think this will ever possibly happen. Pavlik needs to fight Rubio or Griffin hopefully in Cleveland. In that time hopefully something can be made with the two German's ( Strum , and Abraham). Then a unifactation. I see no one coming close to him at 160 and maybee one or two giving him problems at 168(Kessler and Calzaghe). I would however love to see Pavlik fight Andrade for his first 168. I just want to see Pavlik has more power than Kessler and accually put old iorn jaw to sleep.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Think this is just Williams keeping his name mentioned in the press, fair play to him if he's serious but don't think he'd stand much of a chance.

No mention of Arthur Abraham. H'm. I think he's the one guy out there who could give Pavlik a real headache at 160.

I was talking about it more in a stylistic sense. You can bridge a talent gap just by having a style that's wrong for someone. Abraham is definitely the second best fighter in the division but I'm not sure he's the nightmare style match up for Pavlik.
Sure he's hard to hit in that guard but he's also a spot fighter. Pavlik has been hit cleanly before by Edison Miranda over and over and was never any worse for wear, I would be very very surprised if he crumbled under Abraham's power. It's possible as anything is but I just don't see it happening.
And for Abraham, it's hard to win rounds against Pavlik. Pavlik fights for 3 minutes a round, Abraham picks and chooses a minute here, half a minute there and in the face of Pavlik's consistent pressure from Pavlik. Pavlik might have a hard time working around the guard of Abraham in the early going imo, but Abraham would need his power to bail him out if this happened and I think Pavlik is up for the test.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
I have always thought that after The Quintana Rematch...win Or lose...That Williams should move up in weight.Has yet to happen but Should he square off against Pavlik I see him getting trounsed. His quality chin (And its hitability) would get shattered I believe.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
He may be a succesful Jr. Middleweight but even there his physical advantages will be diminished

For 2.5 million i would get in the ring with Satan himself let alone Kelly Pavlik.

That's like that commercial with the guy who said he would go in with Holyfield and then Holyfield knocked his head off. I really don't think I would go in with Tyson that's not a lie.

Re: Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik
Williams can take a great punch, but has somewhat shitty defensive reflexes and low guard. All of Williams physical advantages that he enjoys fighting welters would get washed away, while in with a guy who loves turning opponents into bobbleheads.
Williams will take on anyone, he is a brave guy, but I don't think Pavlik is a line he should cross at this point anyway. I mean hell, 2.5 mil is a lot, but he will probably get the same for fighting Cotto if Cotto beats Margarito. Williams' size advantage does give him at least a fair shake in that one.

No kidding. This is one of the oldest things in boxing.... calling out an opponent and naming a price that you know you're never going to get.
I remember when Roy Jones said he'd fight Lennox Lewis..... if they paid him $100 million.

Where is someone with a spare $100 million when you need one though, right?
If only Bill Gates was a huge Roy/Lennox fan,,,, Roy woulda had to back up his ridiculous offer, and we woulda seen the equivelant of Spud Webb trying to dunk leaping left hooks onto Lennox's 8 foot high head.. (thanks ICB for the reference)

LOL! ANDDDD, it just goes to show/prove how gay it was winning a heavyweight belt off Ruiz... By then going on to say, now pay me $100 million and i'll fight the PROPER champ..! :) I see humour in this...
Anyway, Williams IS smoking something... If only all you need were arms and wacky hair,, he could step up to any weight he would like..
