Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
Following breaking news of Calzaghe's intent to stick around for more fights at the 168lb Super Middleweight division, Calzaghe has given his first interview with The Times since his break up with long time promoter Frank Warren and has openly mentioned the potential match-up against Kelly Pavlik :-
“There is no way I am going to give up my WBO title,” Calzaghe announced to The Time's Ron Lewis “I do not have a mandatory (to his WBO title) at the moment so I do not have to defend my title and if I beat Jones, Im going to move back down to super middleweight to face Kelly Pavlik"
“I still feel young,” Calzaghe stated “...It all depends on how I perform against Jones. There's a good possibility I may fight on. I need fights that motivate me. Kessler motivated me, Hopkins motivated me, Jones motivates me. And Kelly Pavlik has been hanging around.”
“It took me eight years [as WBO champion] to get a unification fight - I was becoming a laughing stock with some of the people I was fighting,” he said. “I was chasing guys like Jones and now they are chasing me.”
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
Seems like everyone does these days....set em up, and i'll knock em down is probably how pavlik looks at it.
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
I thought Calzaghe said a couple of weeks ago that Pavlik didn't deserve a shot; that he hadn't done enough:confused: Or was that Enzo?

I think it was Enzo that said it. I cannot picture Joe backing down from anyone, especially since he has never tasted defeat. I think they just wanted Warren out of the picture so they could negotiate a fight on their own terms.
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
This isn't gonna end up being an ODLH-Mayweather type negotiation is it?
Dear Joe, Enzo, Jack and Kelly.
Please focus on your next fight, afterwards just sign the contract to fight each other, please don't waste valuable media time with I'm going to do it, I'm not going to do it. blah blah blah ad nauseum.
Best Regards,
Killersheep.

Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
I'm glad he's not backing down from the the Pavlik thing, yet he doesn't need to get ahead of himself. If he fights Roy sept 20 it's a little over 8 weeks away, which isn't that much time considering he's just got back from holiday. He needs to get to work in the gym, regardless of how much Roy has slipped, he's still the bigger stronger guy and hasn't signed the fight to back down.

I'm surprised to see a fellow Calzaghe fan knocking Joe's belt.

Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
I do find that a stupid reason to take a fight (or not) at this point in Joe's career. For one, he is very established, has limited fights, and he can buy him another belt from a website in any color he wants.

Its a symbol nothing else that belt has the best history at 168lbs.
Plus Hoe is one of only two men to hold all 5 recognised titles at the same weight.
WBC,IBO,IBF,WBA,WBO and of those at 168lbs the belt with the history is the WBO the others are just tokens.

It's the fighter that makes the belt though isn't it? Calzaghe has beaten the WBC/WBA supermiddle champ and of course the IBF champ in a bout we both favoured Joe to win, so the WBO supermiddle belt has the respect due to the guy who currently holds it.

OK that's just silly, they are all just tokens. The history of the WBC belt at 168 is just as strong as the WBO. And ultimately they are all meaningless against the Ring title. Calzaghe has no use for a trinket at this point in his career, does it make or break a fight with RJJ? NO, does it impact his possible one fight after RJJ? NO.
Calzaghe has the Ring title nothing else matters, that covers all the history he needs.

The why is in the fee structure.
If he gives it up he is free to not pay sanctioning fees. If he wants to defend it that's fine, as long as we all admit it's a novelty. From my point of view it's just a waste of money.
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
This could be music to Roy's ears. his best hope is that Joe is overlooking him, and seeing their fight as a money making exercise. If Joe comes in to the fight thinking its gonna be easy and isnt 100% fit Roy could take advantage.
Wishful thinking i guess.

Maybe you think its a novelty, i think its great hes had it 10yrs id want to keep it its also the belt you would want to beat Joe for his WBO strap. Hes held all the other titles and gave them up it clearly means a lot to him.
One mans "novelty" is another mans treasure.

Yes I do think it's a novelty, the alphabet straps only have meaning when the Ring belt is vacant. RJJ is not trying to beat Joe for the WBO strap, he's trying to beat him for the Ring title.

Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
The only reason he wants to keep the Mickey mouse belt is because he is going for Joe louis' record consecutive defences (obviously at heavy) and if he vacates he will lose the chance! An absolute farce in my eyes not because he has not been the best super middle around for a decade but because he didn't beat the best for it if you understand my meaning. Calzaghe beat Eubank for the vacant WBO belt and I know that Jones had just vacated the IBF belt to fight at LH but for a long time Sven Ottke was regarded as the top man at supermiddleweight and had something like 20 defences of the WBC strap. When in Louis day there is no way this could have happened as there could be only one champ and the way boxing was then if there were two men ruling they would have fought each other, just not the crappy politics of these days back then i'm afraid!
The Ring should become an official governing body and end all the arguments and money making scams !

Poor old Taylor fights Hopkins, Wright and Pavlik and is 10.
How are Froch, Inkin, Lacy, Bika and Andrade above him?

Taylor is 0-1 as a Super Middleweight. His wins at Middleweight don't really count in his ranking.

Yeah i know that, but i would have thought the fact he did some pretty decent things at MW might have ranked him higher than the likes of those mentioned. Especially guys who have Robin Reid as their best win.....

Why would you want to represent a belt in which a dead man can literally move up in the rankings? The WBO has always been equal to the WBU and the IBO. It's a minor league belt.

I think the WBO is a better org now that the WBA and maybe even the WBC ok it doesnt have the history but it only has one champion per weight. None of this regular champion crap just one champ and an interim champ if needed.
Anyway im not sure Calderon,Campbell,Williams,Pavlik,Calzaghe or Klithscko would agree.

Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
I hope Joe does stick to this IF he beats RJJ. It would prove that he hasn't lost his bottle and would restore my faith in him. But I do feel announcing this now not long after the fight with RJJ has been sorted is a bad move, I hope he's not overlooking Roy. yes he's past his best but we've seen in the past fighters pull out one last big performance out of nowhere.

Yes I agree if he overlooks Roy he is in serious trouble. But if Roy has 50% of what he had 10 years ago left it doesn't matter he will destroy Joe!
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
I'm beginning to feel that RJJ may turn up very motivated, in shape and dangerous.
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
Take RJJ lightly at your peril Joe Balls and see what happens, even though way past his best RJJ will be your toughest fight yet and i wouldn't be thinking about Kelly Pavlik's ugly mug for one minute if i were you!
I think Roy can win this!
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
didnt calzaghe just go on about how RJJ is his last fight and he wants it in Cardiff in front of 60,000 fans as a sending off type of deal??
i'm confused..
i dont see joe fighting kelly, esp. since this fight isn't happeneing for another 2 months..
-
Re: Calzaghe: i want Pavlik after Jones
Anytime fighters talk about other opponets other than the one in front of them it makes me cringe. If i'm in joe's corner i don't even want to hear the name pavlik, i would live, eat, breathe nothing but trying to put a hurtin on jones....if he can.

But the WBO super middle belt is owned by the undisputed best 168 fighter. All the alphabet belts are bs with their super champions and champions emeritus nonsense. They do help sell fights though so you can't blame Calzaghe for wanting to keep it because as far as selling future Calzaghe 168 fights goes it's worth money to him.

As much as Roy is past his best he is still a top guy at 175lbs. Its just i dont think his new style of rope a doping will do him any favours against Calzaghe he will get hit with a 1000 combos.

As dangerous as Roy will probably still prove to be... This will be fairly light work for Joe... Maybe hit some bumps along the way but Joe shouldn't have much trouble.
