Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
At a press conference on Wednesday to help hype Saturday's highly anticipated HBO match up between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, Promoter Bob Arum was on hand.
At the conference Arum made it clear what he thought of retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. Arum blasted Mayweather Jr. for not having anything that could hurt Cotto and assured those in attendance that Cotto is the reason Mayweather Jr. abruptly retired.
In regards to a Cotto vs Mayweather Jr. fight, Arum stated: "Miguel would run him out of the ring." Arum went on to add: "He has nothing to hurt Miguel with. Miguel drove him into retirement."
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Why does the thread title say "Miguel Cotto says...."??
Looks like Arum was the one doing the talking, as usual.

awesome..
any talk of a fight between Cotto/Mayweather makes me happy..
Cotto needs to directly call him out to get Mayweather off of his ass..

Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
But Miguel didn't comment?
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Why don't Bob Arum just wait and see if Miguel Cotto actually wins first just a thought ?
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Arum and cotto are still talking about beating a "retired' fighter when they have a active fighter that he may or not beat standing right in front of them. If he would have retired before the hatton fight hattons peeps would be claiming he ran him out......geeeeezzz louise for a guy people hate so much they talk about him more than his fans do.....why continuously bring up his name like he is the bar of the sport. A sport he's not even active in at the time.....build your merit on your own name rather than trying to use floyd's. I will be impressed enough if he beats tony.....boxing isn't all floyd mayweather.

Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Well to be fair Mar, Cotto and Margarito were both asked about Mayweather, so they gave answers. Bob Arum is the only one that brought up Mayweather out of the blue. Everything that was stated in the first post here, came from Arum, not Cotto.
Here is what Margarito and Cotto had to say when asked about Mayweather.
Neither fighter had anything good to say about Floyd Mayweather, Jr., however.
“I have to focus on Saturday night,” said Margarito. “I don’t know what’s going through Mayweather’s mind. I don’t know if he’s playing. It doesn’t matter.
“But do I think he’ll return? . . . I think he’ll be back.”
Cotto had a similar take on Mayweather’s “retirement.”
“I can’t force anybody to face Miguel Cotto,” said Cotto. “I’m here to face the big names.
“But, in ten years, they’ll ask him what the reason was that he did not face Miguel Cotto. Me, I never say never. I don’t know what passes through his mind, but that’s his business. He will probably be back.”
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Yea Arum just being a dik by the sounds of it... Floyd is retired let him be, just like Mar said forge your own legacy
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
I love how Cotto refer's to himself in the 3rd person.
Why even bring up Mayweather when one of the toughest fights in the careers of both men is happening in two days.

Well, you know the press, they have to stir things up, so they keep on asking the same $hit about Mayweather. :furious2:

im a pbf fan. and its constint that my friends will tell me who ever there fav fighter is at the time can beat him or diss his fighting style but to me it seems even the people who hate pbf think hes the best or they wouldnt even care who faught him or who he faught suck as andre berto who is undefeated or margo no one is saying of so and so can beat them andre berto because he hasnt faught anyone great but if u ask a floyd hater they will say the same about him and margo because he was kept in the shadows. but if you actually thought your fav fighter was the best then you wouldn't compare him to anyone

I think Floyd is very talented but by no stretch of the imagination is he anywhere close to being the best as he has never unified a division and therefore never fought the best guys in any weight class he's ever been in ergo he's not close to being the best

i didnt mean the best fighter in the world but of our era yea i would say he is the best some of the guys he gets no credit for fighting had belts and where good fighters at one point cotto never faught the best of any weight class either and for some one moving in weight so quick he went for the belts but i would exspect some one to say somthing like you just said but your probly also the type to give cotto credit for beating gomez or pac man credit for beating david diaz

In all honesty, it was Tony Margarito who chased Floyd out of the game. But still PBF did not even want to phuk with Miguel either.

Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Arum being an idiot as usual.
Why in the world would Floyd retire to avoid a fighter who had to be helped out of the ring after the systematic beatdown that Margarito put on him?
His fighter folded under the pressure and will never be the same fighter again.
I'd love to see Floyd come out and fight Margarito, a real warrior but Cotto will be lucky to get a belt back now after what Margarito did to him.
From now on his career will go the way of Zab Judah and Fernando Vargas. He'll still get the big fights against the top fighters, but he won't be winning many.

Arum began saying this before the Margarito fight, not after the Margarito fight you dumb azz dildo ;D
Cotto will be a champ again :D
;D

Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Ah my mistake. It wouldn't suprise me at all for Arum to still be going on about it however after all this is the man who with a straight face once said that history would see Ali and George Foreman joined by Hasim Rahman as the three greatest Top Rank heavies of all time.
I actually have nothing bad to say about Cotto though, the guy is willing to face anybody and put his reputation on the line each time so I have nothing but respect for him.
I knew Margarito would beat his ass though :D

Miguel Cotto is 27 and he unlike Floyd has fought Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito and he KO'd Zab Judah...those are all things Floyd didn't do. And in fighting Margarito he did fight the best at 147 that fight was ultimately for the bragging rights in the division.
I don't really respect the Gomez fight but fighting Carlos Quintana as his first fight at 147 is pretty big. Floyd fought Sharmba Mitchell as his first fight at 147....WEAK...had he done it maybe 5 years earlier then hell yeah it would be worth something but at that point in his career Sharmba was done.
Floyd is a great boxer but he took no chances
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
I still think Cotto could beat Mayweather, but by neither guy calling each other out they both missed the boat imo. Maybe it could have happened while they were both undefeated, but either way Margarito desrved the fight more than Mayweather. Mayweather did nothing spectacular at Welterweight. Both Margarito and Cotto are much more accomplished at this weight imo because they fought other prime welterweights.
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
I knew this couldn't be true, Cotto has too much class to spout off like that. Arum is almost as sleazy as Don King

first point when cotto did fight the best he got beat. as for zab i think floyd was punishing him before the low blow but thats just my imo also zab took cotto to the ninth round after rocking cotto a couple times and if we give cotto credit for beating zab and we give baldomir credit for beating zab y doesn't floyd get credit for that and floyd turned around and beat baldomire no credit for that i dont get it. i been saying this for years alot of guys floyd beats he out classes them so its always floyd doesn't fight the best but then some other guy comes along and beats a guy a year later that pbf beat and they say wow he is great some one please make this make sense to me
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
like clottey is going to get credit for beating zab but there is some who say he sould be fighting pbf y is he fighting zab and he wants berto next who i feel is gonna beat him but thats takeing a step down imo because berto is still working his way up

Cotto has been beaten ONCE but only because he's not afraid to fight the best fighter out there.
Floyd didn't get full credit for beating Judah because Zab didn't deserve the fight as he lost to Baldomir and looked pathetic doing it. That being said the Zab Judah that fought Floyd was more focused and determined....but Cotto KO'd that version and Floyd didn't
. Floyd didn't get the full credit for beating Baldomir as he knew he couldn't hurt Carlos and he outboxed him but not in a manner where he made Baldomir pay for anything....Floyd didn't flurry on him or make him look foolish or anything any other great fighters did in their most uninspired fights. If Roy Jones Jr. couldn't KO someone he was going to do his damnedest to make them look silly in the ring and he did a good job of it, Pernell Whittaker didn't KO many guys but he made plenty of them look stupid. Floyd has the talent to do that but to waste people's time and money to basically just run away from Baldomir for the last half of the fight and then call himself "The best of all-time"....it's ridiculous, it's what makes people dislike him. He's got great talent but you never know if you're going to get to see it.
Everyone knows Floyd is an awesome fighter but it seems like Floyd is more willing to talk himself up to a high level instead of fighting himself up to a high level. Why leave a division and retire from boxing when the division is overflowing with talent?!?!?! It makes no sense and everyone knows it.

it seems to me your makeing the same point and not really giving me a valid answer to my question. you say cotto lost to the best but mago is not very talented imo. you say floyd faught the focused zab but i still one to me that means he should get more credit if floyd faught the focused zab then cotto faught the unfocused zab coming off of a couple losses. pbf is a proffesional in the ring winning fights the best way he knows how also he hurt his hand in i think the 5th round this is y he stayed away from baldomir. when jones was fighting they always said he wasn't fighting the best and would say his tacticts to make fighters look silly where very unproffesional
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Well Margarito might not be a polished boxer but he's tough and too tough for anyone to stop at 147 and being tough, being able to take punishment is a talent when you can draw someone into your fighting style. Margarito is more dangerous than anyone Floyd has ever fought.
Zab Judah has been more focused since his loss to Baldomir...he was very ready for Cotto despite having lost vs Baldomir and Floyd.
If Floyd acted professionally then he'd give the fans what they wanted and if he's not able to KO Baldomir (which he wasn't going to do anyway) then he should make him look bad. He doesn't have to gloat or showboat or anything like that but he could have boxed aggressively and made Baldomir swing and miss and counter him with the handspeed we all know Floyd has.....but no, Floyd broke a nail and didn't WANT to throw.....well Gatti didn't WANT to hit Mickey Ward with his broken hand but he did it and low and behold he's the fan favorite.
I don't ask anything from Floyd that I wouldn't ask from any other fighter. Floyd has all the talent in the world but should he be compared to Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Roberto Duran, Willie Pep???? NO!
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
im gonna tell you what listening to the fans in boxing gets you more low paying fighst then hudge paydays and your face split open hints cotto who we now see will never be elite he could have faught a couple more average guys and busted them up kept looking good and getting more money once you lose it puts you in a lower price range not saying pbf is scared to fight anyone but he faught who he had to fight to the level he wanted and the money he wanted witch is what you do at your job you make smart buissness moves and for all the fighters who said they could beat pbf and say he put priced himself put the money up take his head of and beat the best if not then u cant complain
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
So you don't think Floyd would make a mint it he fought Cotto? You don't think he'd make money fighting Margarito???
So Floyd doesn't want to be the greatest he just wants to be the best paid??? What a legacy to leave
Miguel Cotto is elite....most fighters lose and most great fighters have lost. But great fighters always push themselves to fight the best....anyone can go out and make money boxing but not everyone can be great and right now Cotto has the respect of fans that Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn't know anything about.

Very well said. I'm not a Floyd hater (for the record), but some things are plain as day... and only blind fans will continue to deny the undeniable.

Floyd is a great boxer but he took no chances
A 27 PBF had
fought and beat Castillo twice
KO'd Angel Mafredy in 2
TKO'd Genaro Hernandez in 8
KO'd Diego Corrales in 10 after knocking him down 5 times.
By age 27 he had won titles at 2 divisions, same as Cotto.
U cannot say that Floyd ducked anyone in his first 2 weight divisions same as Cotto.
Difference is Floyd then went up another 19 pounds and won titles, that would be the equivalent of Cotto winnig a 168 title. If Cotto fought a 168 titleist and won guys like u would be saying how great it was, yet when Floyd does something similiar, u just dismiss it.
My point is that at age 27 Floyd had done as much if not more than Cotto.

At lighter divisions, maybe. But at 147, if Floyd wants to be considered the best, he needs to fight the division's best. That hasn't happened.

Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
Floyd has gone out of his way to dismiss any fight with Margarito and Cotto and anyone else that threatened him.
He didn't want to fight Hatton until Floyd was a full blown welterweight and saw Hatton having trouble vs Luis Collazo and then he realized how easy it would be and made the fight.
Floyd bitched about Mosley ducking him and now what does Floyd do??? He ducks Shane!
Floyd is not a risk taker at all you can look at who he fought and who he COULD have fought and it's plain to see he didn't take many chances. He never unified a division and if anyone had the weight behind them to do it it's Floyd!
-

what i know is pbf came off makeing 20 mill with odlh and probly about 15 with hatton and cotto and margo offered him 8 tell me what you would do even if he faught and beat them both it would only make 16 and if its not about the money to all fighters they would make sure he got the money he wanted since even if pbf has a smaller fan base then both fighter he had more to lose and was more known and more talked about for more years
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
i also must say that out of 39 fights it only takes 2 that can decide if your the best or not in that case the only 2 fighters he had to be would have been castillo, corrales, margo, and cotto because acording to people like you the only 2 of his fights he deserves propes for are castillo and corrales
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
also gatti and up all made there biggest payday fighting pbf so it would be safe to asume it would have been the same for margo and cotto so he gives them the biggest payday and doesn't get half of his biggest payday if money shouldnt be a issue in his job then everyone stop trying to gain more income asap

Thank you, u just strengthened my point. At lighter weights, cos Floyd is a lighter person naturally than Cotto or Margo.
As for the whole didnt unify a division argument, that is bullshit. If Floyd had of stayed at 130 all his fighting life he would easily have unified the division, but there is no way he would have got the P4P satus he enjoys from moving up divisions. What is more impressive? Unifying 130. or moving from 130 up to 154 and beating a future Hall of Famer? Moving up of course.
-
Re: Miguel Cotto says Floyd Mayweather Jr will have to Answer
It wouldn't take Floyd long to unify we all know boxing is about money and Floyd can bring that and he could have unified any division he wanted to but never even TRIED to.
So truth I guess Floyd is really gunning for Bill Gates??
The problem is Floyd wants to be considered as the greatest of all time and he's not coming close because he's leaving questions about himself unanswered.
