It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Promoter
At a press conference on Wednesday to help hype Saturday's highly anticipated HBO match up between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, Promoter Bob Arum was on hand.
At the conference Arum made it clear what he thought of retired boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. Arum blasted Mayweather Jr. for not having anything that could hurt Cotto and assured those in attendance that Cotto is the reason Mayweather Jr. abruptly retired.
In regards to a Cotto vs Mayweather Jr. fight, Arum stated: "Miguel would run him out of the ring." Arum went on to add: "He has nothing to hurt Miguel with. Miguel drove him into retirement."

Margarito isn't retired.....that's all that matters, these guys love usiing floyd's name......sad really.

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
Miguel Cotto had nothing what so ever to do with Oscar who Floyd was due to fight Sept 20th. If he had fought Oscar then retired maybe but i dont buy it Floyd turned down 20million in a virtual gimmie to retire what Cotto has to do with that is beyond me.
I guess the guy got paid for the interview and had noting intresting to say so made up his own wacko theory.

Margarito always stands a chance even if he is outboxed he is rarely if ever outgunned

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
I don't think Floyd is permanently retired.
-
Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
The only thing that drove Floyd into retirement IMO was Floyd's own inflated ego and worth.
Once he realizes he is not a billionaire likes he think he is, he will be back.
You will see him fight in 2009 folks.
I cannot fathom Floyd having a fear of losing. He enjoyed way too much success and does not know what losing feels like. Don't believe for a second that he fears Cotto. He knows Cotto is risky business, but he does not think he can lose to him.
He will get bored and come out for more. Just give him some time.
-
Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
Arum is just playing Carnival barker for what he hopes will come to be match up. I think Cotto is convinced he does not need Mayweather but they both should (I know Cotto Is) have full focus on Margarito ;D
And I will put Money on Mayweather Un-"retiring".....yawn.
-
Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
He's going to pull some Sugar Ray Leonard stuff by unretiring but he's going to get a rude awakening if he fights EITHER Cotto or Toni.
Those guys have put their careers on the line more than Floyd EVER has or ever has even thought of doing!
Shane Mosley, Paul Williams, Carlos Quintana, Cintron, Clottey....Floyd never got near those guys and he had ample opportunity and REASON to fight them (some more than others but they are far more dangerous than Ricky Hatton as a welterweight)

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
Still, if Mayweather fought all these guys and beat them, which I am pretty sure he would, I can imagine people would still be crying about him not facing X or Y "Oh, buf if he fought X he would definitely loose...". It just never ends, does it? Happens to any boxer that dominates like Mayweather.

Yes, there will always be people who will criticize Floyd no matter what. However, if he were to beat an undefeated Cotto in the next 12 months or so, I think just about all intelligent boxing fans would give Floyd his just due.

I wonder the same, would boxing fans give Floyd credit? I wonder where all the people that started anti-Floyd threats would go. This forum would be pretty quiet for at least a few weeks knowing how Cotto is very popular here.

Intelligent boxing fans would give him his due, but a lot of guys on here wouldnt.......
If he beat Hatton he was meant to get his due but never did. I think it will be never ending as long as there are guys on here who hate him.
I for one thinks he beats Cotto, but if Miguel was to win I'd admit i was wrong and give him his due.

Mayweather retired because he is an attention seeker. He retired for attention and he will return for attention.

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
Floyd was probably the best pound for pound, however, for some reason he by himself is not a big ticket seller, until recently. We all know how De La Hoya and Hatton can sell. I am not saying Floyd does not have fans because he has a lot, but there have been more exciting boxers for which the people was really willing to pay. I think Floyd is just waiting for other big name to raise and take advantage of that opportunity and make the money he did not do during the inactivity period. I think he is looking for a few big fights rather than many smaller ($$$) fights. If Cotto beats Margarito, and his promoters can reach an agreement with De La Hoya for a fight, and Cotto wins again, I think that will be sufficient to make Floyd return to the ring and fight Cotto. However, De La Hoya seems to be looking for "glory" fighting smaller size boxers like Manny that may represent less risks at WW than Cotto.
I believe that De La Hoya would be more willing to fight Ivan Calderon than Cotto ;)

That is all we have been asking for. Hell if he would have put on a clinic with Mosely I would have given him just due.

Come on dude. You try to be fair and begin threads about "your honest opinion about Margarito," but it is clear that your distaste for Tony goes beyond what he can do in the ring. I believe my man Cotto has enough boxing skill and power to win a 12 round decision. But I also give Margarito a great chance. I don't believe I am an idiot. I hope your confidence in Cotto is 100% correct, but you need to give Tony some respect. Cotto will for sure by "boxing."

See, at the moment, there are only two fighters Floyd should fight and that is Cotto and Margarito (not Oscar AT ALL). So if Floyd beat those two, the logical and reasonable fight fan would say there is nothing else for Floyd to prove and would accept his retirement. Sure, Floyd has won belts in all those weight divisions, but not always against the elite. So he has accomplished a lot, but not always fought the best while accomplishing a lot, especially in the last three years. But I don't care about any of that. As a fight fan, I want to see Floyd against Cotto or Margarito or even Shane as opposed to Floyd vs Gatti, Baldomir, and Oscar.

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
One fact to remember is that every time Cotto is asked about Floyd not fighting him or Floyd's retirement, Miguel has been very diplomatic while spewing the "I fight whoever the company puts in front of me" line. The ones clamoring for the fight to happen is the promoter Arum because of the financial possibilities, and the fans, because of entertainment possibilities. In a way, Cotto's noncomittal responses make others clamor for the fight more. It's almost like Cotto is saying: "I know he should fight me, but he won't," which makes fans kind of side with Cotto and lean towards Floyd being afraid or wanting money first fame later.

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
I just think cotto and hell even margarito can make thier own presence felt in this sport without always referring to floyd like he is some type of benchmark. Before he so called retired, these same people talked about how he was a fake champ, runner, ducker, cheater, the real source of the aids virus all kinds of shit, now the man is (cough, cough) gone and now he not such a chump yet instead a name to use to make yourself look like a bad-ass since floyd was so terribly scared, so much so he retired. Then again maybe they see the future and are still attempting to build a fight that everyone thinks is going to happen...either way it's just getting old. There is going to be in my opinion an awesome floyd-less fight this weekend. Cotto and Tony are all the hype we need.

It would be great if anybody accepted someone's retirement specially when they dominate the sport like Floyd does (even though he has 2 questionable wins) but I can assure you boxing fans will still be crying because he didn't face X or Y.
Quote:
I want to see Floyd against Cotto or Margarito
I may be the minority but I just don't see Cotto or Margarito having the tools to beat Floyd. Don't get me wrong, I would savor Floyd loosing convincingly as much as I did when I saw Hamed loose but I just can't see those two guys beating Floyd. And if I had to pick between Cotto and Margarito, I would think Cotto would have an edge but still, not enough to beat a guy like Floyd who has not shown flaws/weaknesses.
Quote:

Afraid? I doubt it. Money? Sure! Any smart boxer out there and any of us would not waste a fight for a lesser/smaller paycheck. Imagine a guy who fights 2 times a year and pick a guy who will not even bring half of what he already earned in other fights? Forget it.

Re: It was Miguel Cotto who drove Floyd Mayweather Jr into Retirement says Famed Prom
As i said on the other thread similar to this one lets wait and see if Miguel Cotto actually wins first you can never write off a fighter as strong as Antonio Margarito especially with his granite chin/determination/workrate......
Plus his physical strength and sorry Miguel Cotto fans even though i like Miguel Cotto i am a fan of Antonio Margarito and i did enjoy the beatdown in the last few rounds lets just hope this fight doesn't ruin Miguel Cotto mentally.
