Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
With Antonio Margarito in action this weekend I got thinking about some of his fellow countrymen who have entertained down the years and I would like to know who the Saddo boxing "experts" think is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.
Like some of my previous polls I will have to put a other category in but will try to pick the best 9 IMO. If your favourite isn't there vote other and please state.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Ive voted for Salvador Sanchez. I know Chavez fans will crucify me but look at what he had achieved by the time he died aged 23.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Ricardo Lopez no question he is the most skillful Mexican fighter who ever lived and with 51-0-1 record and an undefeated amateur record who can argue with that ?

I'll admit I don't actually know enough about him to be honest. I know that he only had one blemish on his record and that was avenged in his next fight. I will though do a bit of studying and get hold of some of his fights and so on.

Theres quite a few of Ricardo Lopez's fights on youtube you should start there but as for Salvador Sanchez no doubt he was very skillful and a good counter puncher but he often got caught with more punches than he should have because he let his warrior like spirit sometimes take over as do many Mexican fighters where as Ricardo Lopez was always pure masterful technician with 1 punch KO power Miguel Canto is also up there he is like the Mexican version of Willie Pep.

The warrior like spirit is what I love about Mexican boxers. I know that Miguel Canto was a very different type Mexican fighter too. He has been described as a Mexican Willie Pep. He though did not have 1 punch KO power and I think he only KO'd 15 in about 70 fights.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Too hard to call!
First thought was sanchez, but cos of his shortened career it is always debatable as to how he would have gone had he fought for longer.
Chavez was great but he fought too many bums at the start of his career and fought on too long at the end. Prime, mid career Chavez has claims.
Ricardo Lopez'z record and skill speaks for itself, but cos he fought at such a small weight he is not as well known and may not have had the lvel of competition of the other 2.
I'll go Sanchez, but could easily have voted for Chavez or Lopez.

I actually did consider him for the list but I think he's more american than Mexican.

ODLH was born, raised and developed in the USA.
As for the question at hand there are far too many ATG from Mexico for me to choose, I try and contribute, but this one would take at least a week to compile a list of my top 10 in no order.

It took a while for me to decide who to have as my 9 choices so I know what you mean. I almost voted Chavez too but something made me change to Sanchez right at the last minute.

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Salvador Sanchez!!! The guy was fierce he was tiny but he was just nonstop action and threw punches from everywhere. Sal was a great fighter eventhough he was cut down in his prime....but look what he did in his short career which was just starting to peak.
Sanchez could have gone on to fight JC Sr. and other great fighters...it's scary to think what he could have accomplished.

Not to mention Oscar lost most of his big fights against really good fighters: Mosley (the rematch was a ripoff though), Trinidad, Hopkins, Mayweather.....all losses

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
If I had to vote just 1 it's simple... JCC.
Here's my top 10 Mexican fighters.
1. JCC
2. 'Finito' Lopez
3. Olivares
4. Sanchez
5. Roman
6. Erik
7. Canto
8. Saldivar
9. MAB
10. 'Chiquita' (Vastly overlooked in the All-Times lists)
Honors: JMM, Zaragoza, Zarate, Efren, Pintor, Medina, 'Santa Tokyo', 'Cobrita', Arce, Zurita, Kid Azteca, Rafa, Izzy, Herrera, Montiel, Mijares, Solis, Cazares, "Yaqui", Arizmendi, "Raton", Villasana.
*Depending how JMM, Mijares, Montiel, Rafa & Izzy close out their respective careers I think either one could potentially slip into the top 10.

Good list, Mick. My top five would look like this:
1. Finito
2. Sanchez
3. Chavez
4. Barrera
5. Zarate
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
I have Zarate somewhere between 11-20.
Not really sure where.
I just feel that his career at championship level aside from the Zamora unification bout (which a lot of people don't know it was) was a bit short compared to others with longevity. Tho his opposition is as good as it could be so there's a plus side...

This list is not a mile off i have to say , Salvador was fantastic but the fact is he did die young , which gives the edge to Finito Lopez for me , but hey both were just wonderful fighters.

Trinidad and Maywather, weeeeeeeeeeeell, doesn't convince me. Hopkins and Mosley I, sure, I can see how he lost those.
ODLH, hhhhmmmm...I still see him as Mexican but I guess this is being debated in another thread, right?

Interesting that you have Morales above Barrera.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Maybe because Morales fought the better competition?
Plus Morales did have wins over Jones and Pacquiao who both beat MAB twice.
Pac did beat Morales twice, but Morales beat Pac first.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Morales didnt have better competetion than Barrera
I'd say the greatest Mexican is Barrera . Chavez is his closest rival but Barrera is a better technical boxer plus he has superfight wins over unefeated superstars .

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Sanchez sadly died before he was ever in his prime. What was he 23 - 24 or something like that.

Chava was 23 when he died.
It's crazy cause there's a Japanese fighter by the name of Masao Ohba who's life is "strangely" very much a like Sanchez. Both brilliant fighters at a early age, both champs and just 23 and already beating top opposition, they both died at the same age and the same way. In a car accident.
Masao Ohba
Not sure if you ever read this or not but anyway here it is...

Fair enough but I agree with Preme . Barrera was the greatest ever!

Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Julio Cesar Chavez.
Salvador Sanchez was probably more talented and maybe better, but not greater. Chavez achieved more, and I don't rank fighters higher than others because they "could have" done more if not for a tragedy or other circumstances.

Maybe yes! I wish that Sanchez had fought Pedroza. That would have made him even more of a legend providing he beat him that is.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
I have absolutley no idea.
Don't discount Marco.
Salvador was truely great.
JC Superstar was perhaps the most determined fighter of the past 1000 years.
Finito was a phenom.
Too many, I really don't know.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
Julio Ceaser Chavez the superstar
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
P4P Ricardo Lopez would of beaten all of them he was far too talented and could adapt to any style.
-
Re: Who is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time?
erik morales. cuz he was my favorite.
