Who should James Toney fight next?
The second Toney: Rahman fight was odd. Toney looked like he was sleeping the first round off. In the second round he was closing the gap and actually threw a couple of meaningful punches. In the third I thought Toney was beginning to actually look good. And then it was over. I would really have liked to have seen the fight go on just to gauge where Toney is really at in terms of workrate and stamina and being able to consistently land telling blows without taking to many breathers.
So where next for Toney? I would like to see him fighting soon. Time is limited and he has maybe 3 fights in him if he is to fight for another year or so. Toney isnt going to get a title shot based on 3 rounds with Rahman so its probably going to be another fight with someone ranked in the top 20. Danny Williams is hovering around there and Ive heard his name bandied about before. Would be an okay stay busy fight for Toney. Golota would be a funny matchup with Toney. Hilarious differences in size! Maybe even Maskaev?
There are a few fighters he could target. What are your thoughts?

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
Maybe a fight with Povetkin or the winner of Tua Arreola, Or (GASP) a fight with David Hayes.

Yes, a Tua fight would be quite interesting and maybe fun to watch. And of course, I would love to see Toney fight Haye. If Toney is at a similar level to where he was in the first Peter fight then I think he beats Haye.

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
sergie Lyakhovich. That would answer questions for me.

That would be good. Brock or Eddie Chambers would be a good fight.

Interesting . . .
If he cant K.O Sergie I duno if he could outwork him. Yeah it would be a decent est but if I was part of Team Toney I wouldnt go in that direction . Id secure him a safer bet . But from a fans perspective as you say it would answer questions.

Well I am a big fan of both guys. SL is my man. But him and Toney both need a big fight to get them into a title shot I think. As a fan, I actually think it would be a great fight and the winner would get a chance.

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
Joey Chestnut......in an eating competition.......food: hot wings
I'm leaning towards Toney in this one...mainly because his gravitational pull is dragging me that way ;D
But seriously, I think he could be a tough TOUGH first fight for David Haye
-
Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
Would love to see him fight Haye, I think Toney would break him down for the late stoppage. Hayes only shot would be an early-mid KO, which isn't much of a shot against even this Toney. If not then a fight with Arreola would be great. Think Toney wins this one handily too. Guess it's kinda depressing when these are supposed to be the best up and coming HW's... But James is a tricky SOB and I think he'd show these guys so much more4 than they have ever seen in the ring.
-
Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
James Toney's defense is really tricky and he can counter very well....maybe not with the most power but enough to make the crowd ooh and aahh. And if either Haye or Arreola KO Toney then it's a big deal because JT has never been KO'd...he's not what he used to be but he's a tricky fighter and will give them experience.
I think I would put Alexander Dimitrenko on the list too...he's young, undefeated but a record full of has beens and never was' ....JT may upset him easier than Haye or Arreola and it woul dgive his career more life.
I think Hasim Rahman would be a good test for these young guys too

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
I've been saying for months that Haye should fight the Rahman/Toney II winner.

Should. But I don't see any way in hell his first HW fight, after all his talk and hooplah about unifying the division, is against James TOney. Not when you consider all the slow clumsy guys who are just ripe for the picking from a guy like Haye, as compared to Toney who has seen it all before a dozen times and has more ring smarts in his pinkie than the rest of the HW division combined. Plus Toney wont be around much longer, and he isn't heralded as a top guy anyways.

Let this FAT and OVERRATED burger get to Europe and get some fights under his belt instead of fighting bums in America - the future of the division is in Europe, so let Toney fight here - Vladimir Virchis, Sultan Ibragimov, Alexander Dimitrenko and Serguei Lyakhovich would be good and level ups opponents for the fat guy.

Im not even mad at your post..
Because the genuine chance toney has to beat all of those guys makes me want him to fight them just to let you see :D:p
in fact lyakhovich is the only guy i really rate with much of a chance.. just down to workrate.. i.e the brewster fight NOT the briggs lol

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
Toney aint got much time left. Probably Povetkin.

I think you overstepped the line by calling James Toney a burger....but otherwise some very interesting opponents I wouldnt mind seeing Toney face. I dont think James Toney can fly to Europe though...the plane would have serious issues taking off. ;)

It is great to see a fellow Lyakhovich fan, even if you are a fan just because you are a racist bastard. We need all the fans we can get.

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
Toney should call out Haye and put the old fat man smack on him...while chugging down a box of fiddle-faddle. I honestly think Even an aged and xxx-L James Toney is too sound for him and draws him into the deep end.

Thompson had the power to hurt him . Do you think Toney has ? I know hes got the skills but not sure if he can knock Haye about .
Haye shouldnt be going for Toney . Rahman would make him look better

If Toney can knock out any heavyweight its Haye. I give him ample chance against a cruiserweight jumping up a division with a shady chin and questionable stamina.
Im not interested in seeing Haye look good and thats why I would really like to see him try Toney for size. Toney is past his best, but even now can probably make Haye look very bad.

A fight vs O'Neil Bell would be good for Toney

Chambers could be a good fight...

How come ? Britain could have a new heavyweight to clean up on the world stage. Hes not exactly another Lewis but he could get some good wins in the current climate .

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
I'm VERY interested in Haye doing well....up to a certain point. Then maybe one heavyweight could get the credit he deserves

Im going to seem like a bit of a hater but there is just something about him that grates. Cocky and too full of himself. Toney is one of my favourite fighters in the history of the fight game. If Haye and Toney fought I could only hope for one result. Maybe Haye will do alright as a heavyweight but he hasnt proven anything until he fights someone in the top 6.

No not at all. I feel the same. He is clearly arrogant and I was happy to see an honest pro like Thompson knock him out . I was also hoping Mormeck and Enzo would beat him but he is a heavyweight I think he stands a decent chance of putting tis country back on the map so petty hate can wait . I think his speed gives him a good shot at scoring some early wins so instead of hoping he loses, we cant actually get behind a Brit who is probably the best weve had since Sir Lennox.

Im stupid, and need histroy lessons, because I believe David Haye would destroy James Tony?
Tony is a shell of what he was, people just dont like Haye because he runs his mouth all the while.
He has beaten the best in his weight division, and he is moving up. James Toney has nothing left to offer, unless he is ramming himself with steroids.
Haye would stop Toney...simple as.
Its my opion, doesnt mean I am stupid...

Re: Who should James Toney fight next?
David Haye didn't even unify the titles at cruiserweight....so he didn't beat ALL the best he just beat Mormeck. I don't rate Maccarinelli at all. How many times has James Toney been knocked down much less knocked out?????
Give me the answer and tell me if you feel a LITTLE like you've been drinking the David Haye Kool Aide.
Just to be honest and show my impartiality I dislike James Toney more than any fighter not named Floyd Mayweather Jr. but I give the guy respect for his skill

Mormeck had the belts, Haye beat him, Macarinelli had the other one, Haye beat him.
Toney is shot, and at this point in his career he wouldnt last with Haye.
I hate David haye, but i know if these two got in the ring, Haye would demolish him

The recent Hasim Rahman vs. James Toney heavyweight fight has been declared a 'No Decision' by the California State Athletic Commission
so i would like to see him fight Rahman again

Reggie Johnson 1991 - Legit knockdown. - Got up to win
Roy Jones - Flashy but taunting back put him off balance
Sam Peter 2.. Stood toe to toe on his heels and put off balance by a jab.
I believe thats all of them.
Stopped - Never..
Having fought all the best from middleweight to Heavyweight.

Apart from holyfield, where are all these great Heavyweights?
Looking down his other fights cant really see anyone worth listing apart from beating Mike Mcullum, losing to Montel Griffin errr twice.
And losing near enough every round to Roy Jones JNR

Oh dear me.. :D
You are digging your own hole.. anyone worth listing! Dont comment on things if your going off boxrec and havent seen and dont know about the incidents.. im not trying to be a jerk but please.. only express your opinions on fact.. I might seem like a jerk arguing with you but in all fairness there are guys on here so much worse that would be well harsh.
Urr.. lets see
Prince charles williams..
reggie johnson
Iran Barkley
Michael Nunn
In 2003 he was fighter of the year.. he beat visili jirov for the ibf cruiserweight title in one of the best and most skillful fights i have ever seen.. He not only beat evander but for one he was a massive underdog and stopped evander holyfield which only riddick bowe had done up to that point!.. and toney is a middleweight.. and people say evander was past it evander was past it.. but he still went on to beat some tough guys and earn another world title shot and still hasnt been stopped since!..
toney wore him down in a master peice..
and how i can tell for one that you havent seen these fights or havent been informed enough on these boxing matters is that toney has been robbed of decisions he deserved his entire career
he won BOTH montell griffin fights clearly..
He won the first samuel peter fight clearly..
and in my opinion a hell of a lot of his split decisions were unanimous wins for him. should have been..
Like i said.. its not an arguement or any bad blood here..
im just trying to educate you and express my opinion as you are to me with your own opinion.. but i personally believe that my opinions are based on more fact then yours..
and i only ranted like this because you questioned toney's competition.
Peace
