How does Berto-Cotto go?
Once Berto gets more fights under his belt, how does this fight go? Berto is so fast, and he has that amazign right uppercut, can Cotto handle it? Berto has looked pretty tough against Estrada, and he is bigger than Cotto, and seemingly stronger. I see Berto eventually being the WW champion, but Cotto is so good that he can't be anything but a favorite in this fight.
Also I still feel berto hits harder than either Cotto or Margarito, and he has that speed thing that makes punches feel that much harder(Ask Roy Jones Jr.'s opponents)

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Berto gets beat up... He hasn't progressed much un his last 5 or so fights...
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Cotto would punish him. Berto would be in over his head.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I don't mean right away, and Berto has progressed tenfold from 5 fights ago, He is way smarter about his speed, he moves more, he is more accurate, getting a better defense. I remember Kellerman saying that Berto basically is as good as he gets, and Lennox basically said your stupid, and that Berto was improving every fight. His jab is a lot better, his distance, everything, and I think he only needs two or three more fights before he is ready for the best in the division.

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Berto is not ready to fight the likes of Cotto,Margarito,Williams and even Judah and Clottey yet.He should fight somebody like Jose Luis castillio and go from their.

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Whatever you say Taeth... Berto gets busted up and KOd

Gotta agree Geraldine. LOL!

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Great Thread
Berto needs way more work, and may never have the sheer aggression and will of Cotto. Now that he is a real contender we'll see, wont we?
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Berto would be a great sacrificial lamb for Cotto's comeback. Nice choice.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Berto now, then, or in the future, gets his ass handed to him on a platter, sorry this kid being called a "world champion" is the biggest joke in boxing since Hatton/Maussa being billed as an actual ppv fight, or even a competitive fight

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I was just having this discussion with a friend, and we came to see that Berto showed his greatest improvement in movement, defense and power in his last fight. But in another sense, that only now makes him a true CONTENDER, so we have ordained him a Contender with a Belt. No hating, no qualms; it happens with many limelight/olympic boxers (vargas, juan diaz, etc.). But now is when we get to see what type of boxer he will become. Please remember that David Estrada was once pushed as much as Berto, and now he is a really tough trial horse.
Here are the people I think will help him progress in his career & grow as a fighter.
Luis Collazo
Zab Judah
Alfonso Gomez
Carlos Quintana
Out of these, I would say Collazo is his biggest challenge (depending on which Collazo showed up)
And big props to the comment about using him as a great comeback fight!

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Berto has not fought anyone or anything to even come close in preparing him for the likes of Cotto & company.
Very good Improvement, great handspeed and TV friendly but he needs some adversity against a viable, serious opponent who will ask him questions and demand answers.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I don't think Berto is all that great a boxer or has significant power and that spells doom for any match up vs Cotto.
Berto-Judah or Berto-Gomez would be pretty good

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Where has Berto shown anything except at least very good power? He has knocked out 19 of 22 opponents, His second and fouth fight were both UD, but since then only his fight with Rivera has gone the distance, and that flash knockdown in that fight is the only round I've seen him lose this far, and probably in his entire career. He has Lennox Lewis salivating over his potential. He's probably the fastest guy in the 147 pound division(Zab is up there, but he's 30, and doesn't throw combinations like Andre) He has had good middle stage fights with Rivera, Estrada(who went 12 rounds wiht MOsley, and it took 10 rounds for Cintron to KO him), and Rodriguez isn't a bad fighter either. He is fighting Forbes which should be a better evaluation of his skill level.
I don't see why people don't see his style as very dangerous for Cotto, he is resilient, he has great stamina, he DOES throw with power, and his most dangerous punch, the uppercut, is the punch Cotto is most susceptible to. I have acknowledged he needs a few more fights to face guys like Cotto, but I can't believe people are being this hard on this guy, I mean Hopkins had barely turned pro by 24, Cotto had foughten Torres and Corley and nobody at that point would have thought he would beat Judah or Mosley down the road because they had seen just how vulnerable he was. Berto has shown way less vulnerability and even more upside IMO.

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I rather see him fight the likes of carlos quintana, zab judah (if he losses), even a kermit cintron (who is maybe a lil better then ppl thought because cotto loss aswell) but for berto to be fighting cotto even after 2 to 3 fights wouldnt be close in my eyes
peace

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
How Berto has a belt fighting the crap he has is beyond me.
Berto like Froch like Khan have yet to face ANYONE let alone someone decent so i will assume that Cotto will murder him.
BUT! with Cottos inability to take a lot of punishment means one never knows.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Cotto can't take punishment??? He took 11 rounds of Margarito's hardest stuff.....least see anyone else do that while trading with him (bar Paul Williams who if Tony BOXED would destroy with repeated right crosses)
So the biggest name on Berto's record is David Estrada he KO'd him that's ok I guess, Cintron softened him up for everyone. He couldn't KO Cosme Rivera who Judah KO'd in 3.
I think the Berto fans had better not overlook Steve Forbes because he may shock the world as he can take a shot and can box pretty well

How has he not progressed when he's fought progressively tougher opponents?
I can see Berto becoming one of the divisions elite in a year or two. He shouldn't have a belt yet, guys are going to be gunning for him he isn't ready for yet, but he can become a force. Remember, Berto has fought as high as middleweight. To have been that big and to be able to come down to 147 and be that fast is something special. Margarito's troubles have come against bigger guys and Berto is one. In 2 years I don't think we'll be questioning if he can beat either Margarito or Cotto. I'm not saying it'll be definite, but we'll see it as a great possibility.

Cotto doesnt take punishment well he hit Marg much harder and more often.
He has a solid chin but its far from great Clottey and Williams took Margaritos bombs.

Andre Berto has never been in with a good opponent thats why he has that KO ratio.

Agreed look at Carl Froch.

I disagree he has a belt now. I f he is willing to be a belt holder he has to face all the challenges that came with it

Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Berto's strap means as much to me as Mora's... They both got them and good for them... They both earned them... But can they keep them? Mora has a better shot then Berto.

Berto doesn't need to waste his time with a shot JLC. He need a real challenge, somebody who can take him deep and give him some real trouble. Collazo is next in line for a shot at Berto's WBC belt and that would be the logic next set for him. It would be a rare opportunity to get a title defense against his #2 contender AND fight a guy who is the perfect level for your career development. He might not even get past Collazo. If he does, he'll be ready to step up against one of the top welters.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I'm just not understanding all this Berto love. He's rediculously overrated and unless he outworks him(which he probably would) Collazo is the more skilled fighter. Berto's power is good not crazy. His handspeed is good but he is just so over rated.

I agree, and he's the larger man, too. Notice I said he might not get past Collazo. That is the fight he needs to make to justify all the hype.
Berto has only in in with taylor-made opposition. Fighting Forbes is weak move , too. Forbes is better that the other guys he's fought, but Stevie belongs back down at 140 and Berto will be much bigger.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Agreed. Forbes will get outmuscled but no one will ever say 2 pound lacks sack!
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I love berto...but right now he wouldn't stand a chance, too huge of a jump in competition, in say maybe like a four rounder it would be kinda interesting but cotto is still cotto. One loss doesn't put him on the radar for guys like berto. Berto is champ now though so these kind of match-up aren't out of the question, i hope berto takes bigger jumps in comp in fact he will have to, but i hope he keeps it a reasonable as he possibly can without looking like a punk cause i do see a lot of potential for this kid to be the man one day.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I think Cotto would KO him at the moment (if he recovers OK from his loss, that is).
I can see Berto winning a big-ish fight, but he needs to string a few consistantly good world-class performances together.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
The Cotto that lost to Margarito would destroy Berto and I'm a huge Berto fan. Berto is ripe for Cottos Jab and Left to the body, he needs to fight the winner of Judah/Clottey--I say he can beat them both. After that fight, maybe Collazo and by that time he will have to start fighting the Margs/Cotto/Williams and then we will see if we have this generations Fantastic 4.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I think it would a good fight for Cotto. I think Berto is just unpolished enough to lose against a Cotto who could use a confidence booster after his loss.
That said, I've only seen about 4 berto fights. He does look very good, fast, strong upper cuts. So he shouldn't be taken likely by anyone. I love this division.
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
Cotto would Fukkin destroy Berto... They are not in the same league:rolleyes:
-
Re: How does Berto-Cotto go?
I like Berto to have a warm up fight first ,maybe for the TRAILER PARK CHAMPIONSHIP held by Kid Thunder .
It may not be competitive but The Dark Lord would pay to see it .
