Miguel Cotto...

So Cotto stated that he'd like to return toward the end of 08... I really hope so. The question is... Against who?

Miguel Cotto is not the type of fighter that needs to be babied and coddled... He is a fighter and probably will return against a top 10 or 12 fighter of a Kermit Cintron Caliber...

I would love to see him take Andre Berto's title cuz he could... Of course we know that Berto is slated to fight steve forbes... Even Forbes has the ability to take his title... but he won't.


I can't wait for Miguel's return...

He needs to get back in with Tony ASAP.

Cintron and Berto are both good choices.

I know he is already anxious to get back into the ring, which is a good sign. I keep hearing people say, not necessarily from here, that Cotto's confidence has been shattered. Bull$hit!! Cotto is not a weak minded person like Cintron.

Berto, Cintron, or even Collazo would be a good fight to come back with. A rematch with Margarito will happen, but that won't happen until next year. I can see that fight being at MSG the night before the Puerto Rican Day Parade. It would be a sell out there.

Anyways, Cotto just needs to get back into the gym, or he's going to start looking like Kessler, because Cotto has the tattoo bug, he just got his 5th one in less than a year.

Plus I need to see more training pics with his pants hanging low. :lickish::lickish::lickish:

I read that he said he is open to a Cintron fight December.

I doubt Arum would allow Cotto.

I would keep him away fom Tony for now he got a bad beating towards the end of the fight so have a rematch after you get a few wins under his belt.

Depends if Cotto gets hit getting inside with his chin and Cintrons power i predict an early KO Cintron.

I am not sure if people would pay to see a rematch right away with Tony after he lost clearly and in a humiliating way. If the fight was close then yeah, different story. Maybe have Cotto get a couple of victories here and there to elevate his status once again even if he fights guys passed their primes or a few journeymen like he has done already. He should be back soon, he's still young.

I complete disagree with him coming back this year.

People need to realize this dudes been fight 3, 4 times a year for the past 4 yrs. or so. He's been fighting top level opposition since early in his career and he hasn't slowed down. When you go through that many fights a year for 4 yrs. or so it will def. take its toll on the body.

Cotto needs time off and needs to take a vacation to clear the mind, take the kids somewhere fun and just relax for the rest of this year.

A return early 2009 would be perfect for him and I hope his team and himself are smart enough to realize he needs time off.

Also a comeback fight vs. a top conder would be good for him.

Hhhhmmmm not sure if I can agree with him facing top level opposition. 2 guys passed their primes and coming from loosing streaks and everybody before that can we say past opponents were the greatest threats out there? Cotto finally faces a guy in his prime, young, etc. And things didn't go as expected.

When you compare how fighters are brought up and and carried along the rankings it's easy to see Cotto fought good competition since early in his career. He was NOT fighting opponents who were debuting, he was fighting experienced oppostion. This can clearly be seen when you see his name on opponents record and before OR after him that same opponent fought the likes of JLC, PBF, Corrale, Popo, Manfredy who were already established fighters and he was just fighting in his 9th, 10th fight.

When your fighting former world champs in just your 14th fight that really says something and Bazan after that went on a good wining streak.

At 18-0 he stopped Sosa in 4 rounds, who had previously gone 12 with PBF and PBF was 29-0.

That to me speaks volumes when your a prospect and your fighting the same level of opposition as the top fighters are.

I wouldn't mind seeing him fight williams.

even if berto wasn't fighting forbes, i still don't think that it would be a good choice for him to fight cotto.. too much of a risk, and considering cotto is coming off of a loss it won't be as high regarded of a victory.. granted it would be a hell of a feat if berto beat cotto, but i just don't think this is the right time..

Cintron got destroyed by margarito twice.. that is the only reason why i wouldn't be too excited to see him fight cotto.. woul dbe entertaining, but not the most exciting fight.

I think PW is the fight right here. PW was undefeated until recently, and avenged his loss.. as far as i'm concerned PW is held in pretty high regard as far as credibility goes in the WW division, even though he lost to someone who he very soonafter KO'd in 1 round..

so Cintron or PW for a comeback fight, and if i had to choose it would be PW.

Sure, but not sure if we can compare his resume to ODLH's or Floyd's. I went through his resume before and I just don’t see a comparable opposition to the already-mentioned. ODLH fought some big names from his 14th fight and up. I see some good competition in Cotto's resume but nobody THAT big. When he finally faced someone in his prime and a big name things didn't go as expected even when he faced journeymen. Some fighters come back strong after their first loss. Sure. Bazan had a decent punching power. Had a few losses under his belt when he faced Cotto and recently has been on a loosing streak. Recently lost in Las Vegas by KO.

Those are 2 ATG and it took their careers to be able to compare it to what Cottos done. That says a lot.

People have to realize the kind of toll his body has taken with fighting up to 3 times a year. Name a another World Champ who fights as actively and often as Miguel?
They are VERY few and selected.

I can't help it but think that Team Cotto will be smart enough to get a fight in his hometown of PR to get his confidence back up. No one too dangerous but someone who he can gain confidence with and beat.

Fighting someone like Paul or Berto or for that matter anyone whos a live opponent like Collazo, Cintron etc. etc.
Is as stupid of a managing mistake as one can make, the way the fight went and the way Cotto fought he needs confidence booster and for that he needs the perfect opponent.

Anyone who thinks otherwise and says Cotto needs to comeback strong and fight guys like Paul, Berto etc. etc. is clearly NOT seeing the big picture here or maybe he is and he just wants to see Cotto loose again. ;)

I took those names because people here start threads every day about how ODLH and PBF are nothing compared to Cotto over and over and also to show that Cotto's resume is not really at the same level if we compare names. We can't deny ODLH's resume is admirable regardless of how much ODLH is disliked.

That's right. Quite a busy schedule when he could try 2 fights a year like most big names do. Let's have Cotto get a couple of wins here and there to get his confidence back and bring back his name to where it was.

I see this fight as more like Vasquez-Marquez2 than Lewis-Tyson2. Both guys are still in their primes. A stoppage shouldn't be humiliating, zero defect fans and announcers over exaggerate losses. Cotto lost and was injured in the fight, he has the skill to continue to compete at this level and the fight was very close until the 8th round. Even then he was fighting hard, just gassed out from swallowing his blood and the body work. Making changes to the game plan and training harder can easily change the outcome of the fight. I can't understand how an 11 round stoppage of a 12 round fight makes it non competetive and a rematch useless??? Maybe Hearns shouldn't have rematched Leonard, or did they wait too long? I think they need to do it again because it was a competetive, entertaining fight. And they need to do it soon because a fighters prime is a short window.

I really would like to see Cotto returning to fight with Clotey or Berto , i think this could be a good challenge for him , for beginning after a lose , that could show how mentally strongest he is after all.................

Agreed here,To many young talents never give them selves the oppurtunity to rebound properly when coming off a big time loss,more often its Networks and management trying to recapture the top glory in one fight when it took numerous battles to obtain that status in the first place!The last thing he needs is to get any where near a rematch with Margarito....Oddly,NOW is when he should be fighting a Alfonso Gomez type ;D

Good points but Vasquez/Marquez kept coming back at each other, both going down, etc. Could have gone either way. With Cotto/Margarito, the fight went one way early on and it could be seen that the fight would get stopped sooner or later. With Vasquez/Marquez it kept going back and forth.

In one of the many topics that talked about how Cotto is the greatest some people even mentioned how the Alfonso Gomez fight was such an accomplishment, remember?:rolleyes: It was one of those topics where Forbes, and Diaz, were also mentioned as stepping stone challengers.

:-X......As big of a believer in Margarito that you will find here with a few others but Cotto has my respect when and where it is due.Gomez was a pure showcase fight on a build up card for the big showdown and no one with one ounce of grey matter between they're ears gave willing but limited Gomez a chance ;D

I won't complain if Cotto will take any of these available top (tough) welters; Clottey, Cintron or Williams...

I think the smartest thing is to have Cotto fight the least talented of the belt holders for a comeback. I realize they're all talented, and that's why they have belts, but the trainers have a good idea which opponent has the best chance to stylistically lose against Cotto.

In my opinion berto is the safest choice for a comeback and still give Cotto the respect he deserves as a former champion.

It will put him in a position to possibly win a belt, get back some confidence and get the fight/s he really wants.
