Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
From a recent boxing article:
"The best fighter Keane is involved with, Penalosa, is not necessarily the easiest to deal with. The two-division champ turned down good money to face Abner Mares on the December 6th undercard, but he – get this – says he wants to fight WBO 122-pound title holder Juan Manuel Lopez.
God bless him! JuanMa is downright scary.
I think Penalosa would have a much better chance at defeating the still-green Mares, but major props must given to any veteran fighter who has the balls to call out the Puerto Rican puncher.
Hey, that’s a fight I’d love to see. If anyone can take Lopez the distance in a competitive fight, it’s Penalosa."
Woooo... :musle:

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
Gerry living up to his monicker... He has no fear in fighting bigger and taller boxers than him... He fought Daniel Ponce De Leon, Jhonny Gonzales and now he's calling out the young powerful puncher from Puerto Rico...
Hope Gerry gets this fight on the Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card...

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
Penalosa would rather face the big punchers cuz it's easier to see there punches coming. At his age young fighters with great hand speed would dominate him. I knew he would find a way to avoid facing Mares. Hearing him turn down good money to face him is no surprise. He won't face Lopez easier.

I think Peñalosa is just returning the favor to Team Nacho Beristain... Gerry was calling out Rafael Marquez since November 2004 but Team Nacho didn't entertained him... Now one of Nacho's boys (Mares) trying to get a fight against Gerry but maybe he remembered how Team Nacho responded to his challenge to Rafa before...
Anyway, props to Peñalosa for seeking bigger challenges...

I don't think a veteran like Penalosa would turn down big money on the Dec 6th card just to get back at somebody. He's pretty much just hurting himself. I think Mares youth and like they said hand speed were most likely the reasons why

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
"WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa, living up to his “Fearless” nickname wants a shot at WBO super bantamweight champion and Puerto Rican sensation Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya “Dream Match’ at the MGM Grand on December 6.
In an overseas telephone conversation with insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports, Penalosa’s manager Billy Keane said that mandatory bantamweight challenger Abner Mares has “a detached retina and has to undergo surgery which will put him out of action for the rest of the year. So that fight is off.”
Keane said he had spoken to Penalosa who said he “wants to fight Juan Manuel Lopez . He really wants that fight and believes he can win the fight.” Keane said he would talk to Pacquiao and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who handles Marquez “to see if we can make that fight happen.”
When told that this was a dangerous fight for Penalosa, Keane said “the one thing about Gerry is that he is realistic. If he says he can win the fight he may have seen something in the guy. But I don’t know.”
Penalosa himself told us that Lopez was “strong and good, but I am better.” If ever the fight pushes through the game-plan of Penalosa would be to try and outbox the super bantamweight champion over the early rounds and then hopefully take him out in the later rounds.
Penalosa said he has “always been in training” and gave the impression he is itching to get into the ring and truly enhance his already remarkable reputation.
The veteran 36 year old southpaw and former world super flyweight champion has a record of 53-6-2 with 36 knockouts and won the 118 pound crown with a stunning one-punch KO of Mexico’s Jhonny Gonzales in the 7th round on August 11 last year after dropping a unanimous twelve round decision to then super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon. Penalosa actually out-boxed but lost because of the sheer volume of punches throw by Ponce De Leon although some boxing writers felt he deserved to win..
Juanma, the 25 year old southpaw like Penalosa, is undefeated in 23 fights with 21 knockouts. He won the title with a first round TKO of Ponce De Leon last June 7and then smashed Cesar Figueroa in one round on October 4. Top Rank’s astute Bob Arum told insidesports.ph before the Ponce De Leon fight that Lopez would win by knockout and was his emerging superstar."

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
tHE mare fight can wait, Juanma is hot now and gerry knows this. And where better to fight a young hot fighter then on the Dec 6 pac-hoya undercard.

Though Peñalosa is a GBP boxer, his loyalty belongs to the PACMAN and not to his boss/promoter Oscar... ;)

No need for JuanMa to do it for Jhonny...
Jhonny has the skills to do it for himself... if he gets lucky... ;)

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
Penalosa is excellent fighting leftys. But Juanma aint a natural southpaw though. His money punch is his right hand.
It should be interesting.

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
Gerry Penalosa Tells Juan Manuel Lopez To Stop Hiding
Perhaps learning from celebrated trainer Freddie Roach’s needling of Oscar De La Hoya who, after some pondering decided to take the fight against Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao despite criticism for picking on a much smaller fighter, Gerry Penalosa is using the same tactic to try and draw WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez into a title showdown.
In an interview with insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports after his featherweight protégé Michael Farenasdisposed of a Thai patsy in 78 seconds last Saturday at a packed Mandaluyong City Gym, Penalosa said “I want Juanma. No other than Juanma.”
Picking up the tempo of his rhetoric the WBO bantamweight champion challenged Lopez, the Puerto Rican sensation to “stop hiding. I want to fight you.”Lopez has a record of 23-0 with 21 knockouts and won the title via a stunning first round KO of Daniel Ponce De Leon.

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
Juanma Lopez Not Interested in a Gerry Penalosa Bout
WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa’s bravado in challenging Puerto Rican sensation Juan Manuel Lopez, the reigning WBO super bantamweight champion to “stop hiding” and to fight him hasn’t apparently worked.
Penalosa’s manager Billy Keane in an overseas telephone conversation with insidesports.ph, Manila Standard and Viva Sports said “Juanma turned the fight down.”
Keane said that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum “doesn’t want to do the fight” on the undercard of the “Dream Match” between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya.
Keane believes that as far as the promoters are concerned there is “no need to put another Filipino on the fight card” He pointed out that “every Filipino is going to buy because of Manny and every Mexican is going to buy because of Oscar.”
Is JuanMa avoiding Penalosa? This should have been a good fight. Bantamweight champ versus the super bantam champ. Experience vs. youth...

Juanma ices him inside 5!
-
Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
JuanMa said that Gerry prices himself out and if they fight he will KO Gerry... What a shame, should have been a good undercard to Hoya-PAC... JuanMa now possibly face Sergio Medina instead...
-
Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
Not sure if this fight will come together, but I think it is important for GB/TR to put together a real undercard.
Golden Boy dropped the ball big time when they put together that horrible undercard for Floyd-Oscar. When you have more fans tuning in than usual, you need to put together a better-than-usual undercard to make them want to keep ordering PPVs in the future.

Re: Gerry "FEARLESS" Peñalosa wants to fight JuanMa Lopez on Dec. 6 Hoya-PAC card
I heavily favor a JuanMa-Penalosa fight over JuanMa-Sergio Medina fight... I hope they can offer both JuanMa and Penalosa some decent purses that's acceptable to both...

this is what i read:
His (gerry's) scheduled mandatory defense against Abner Mares also had to be called off because Mares has to undergo surgery for a detatched retina and would be out for several months.
PEALOSA WOULD DESTROY JUANMA!!!
anyway, i think penalosa would be juanma's biggest challenge to date if this comes off. i don't see gerry getting stopped though but losing by decision. gerry has a shot though like what happened with the gonzales fight.
