Penalosa is excellent fighting leftys. But Juanma aint a natural southpaw though. His money punch is his right hand.
It should be interesting.
Gerry Penalosa Tells Juan Manuel Lopez To Stop Hiding
Perhaps learning from celebrated trainer Freddie Roach’s needling of Oscar De La Hoya who, after some pondering decided to take the fight against Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao despite criticism for picking on a much smaller fighter, Gerry Penalosa is using the same tactic to try and draw WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez into a title showdown.
In an interview with insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports after his featherweight protégé Michael Farenasdisposed of a Thai patsy in 78 seconds last Saturday at a packed Mandaluyong City Gym, Penalosa said “I want Juanma. No other than Juanma.”
Picking up the tempo of his rhetoric the WBO bantamweight champion challenged Lopez, the Puerto Rican sensation to “stop hiding. I want to fight you.”Lopez has a record of 23-0 with 21 knockouts and won the title via a stunning first round KO of Daniel Ponce De Leon.
Juanma Lopez Not Interested in a Gerry Penalosa Bout
WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa’s bravado in challenging Puerto Rican sensation Juan Manuel Lopez, the reigning WBO super bantamweight champion to “stop hiding” and to fight him hasn’t apparently worked.
Penalosa’s manager Billy Keane in an overseas telephone conversation with insidesports.ph, Manila Standard and Viva Sports said “Juanma turned the fight down.”
Keane said that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum “doesn’t want to do the fight” on the undercard of the “Dream Match” between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya.
Keane believes that as far as the promoters are concerned there is “no need to put another Filipino on the fight card” He pointed out that “every Filipino is going to buy because of Manny and every Mexican is going to buy because of Oscar.”
Is JuanMa avoiding Penalosa? This should have been a good fight. Bantamweight champ versus the super bantam champ. Experience vs. youth...
