Safest Ways To Cut Weight
We've discussed already quick ways to lose weight in another thread, and generally can agree it is not a healthy practice. Not only for what it can do to a body as far as drain, but also some of the serious long term complications of it.
So basically what my inquiry is, what do you think is a healthy way to lose weight for an upcoming match. Nothing extreme. No saunas or dehydrating. Say for example, for a 1 or 2 or 3 week timespan. Say to lose about 3 to 5 pounds. Is it realistic to be able to do it in a healthy manner successfully?
I have some ideas, but admit I don't really know. I'm thinking making sure to be careful of salt intake, as in limiting it? Also jogging more as opposed to sprinting for cardio? Trying to break meals down to smaller portions but more often daily?

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
Someone wise recently told me about the properties of apple cider vinegar - among other benefits a small amount regularly is supposed to help.
Thought I'd mention it here since it was a big suprise to me!
Reducing excess but not all salt would help too i'd imagine - depending on how much you consume already. Would reduce fluid retention i think.

A way to lose weight very quick is to have a doctor take off an arm or a leg.
Of course you might strugle as a boxer then.LOL;D

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
That's interesting Sharla...going to look into it.
Yours is interesting too porkypara! But I'm afraid I'm going to have to file that one under "serious long term complication". :p

The apple cider vinegar thing really does work. It's good for all sorts of things, balancing pH in the system, skin rashes, controlling yeast in your body. Appetite suppression just happens to be a beneficial side effect. ;D

Okay well I am getting sold on this deal, and have sent Sharla a PM, but no idea when she'll be back. So my question is...how much and how often?

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
Try a couple of tablespoons with a few ounces of water twice a day. Usually after breakfast and after lunch. It tastes awful! So hold your breath!
Here's kind of what I do when I need to lose weight for a tournament.
1. Try to never get more than 5-7 pounds over your competition weight to begin with.
2. Start way in advance so you don't have to crash diet.
3. Begin by cutting calories where you can. No soda's or treats. Cut back on salt and sugar.
4. A couple of weeks before tournament time cut back on breads and rice, but don't do some high protein fad diet thing. Just replace those carbs with oatmeal and fruits and veggies. (except bananas, save those for after the tournament)
5. Be a little more active. If you usually train 5 days a week. Up that to 6 days a week when you start. Then as time gets closer, it helps me to do a little something in the morning and then do my regular workout in the evenings. If I have boxing training from 7-9pm, I'll do a 2-3 mile run in the morning.
6. Try not to eat after 7 at night. A light snack after working out but that's it. Light dinners, early in the evening or late afternoon are best.
That's what works for me, I'm usually able to lose .5-1 pound a day doing that without sacrificing any energy.

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
thanks sourpuss, great stuff.
Yea some of that is what I basically am trying to do, and to do it in a healthy manner, and of a slower process this time. Whereas my last fight, I had to drop from 160 to get to 154, and in too much of a hurry.
As of this morning I weighed in at 156, and am trying to graduallly and comfortably get there, or 153 even, to ensure no last minute silliness.

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
Once you get your weight down and maintain it for a bit, it will get easier. I walk around 3 pounds lighter than I competed two years ago. All it took was a few adjustments to my workouts and a few dietary changes. But you're also growing, so be aware of that. There is going to come a point in time when you'll just have to move up.

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
As of today - woke up this morning at 155.5 lb, after breakfast. Been following tips, eating well but small portions, watching salt intake. Tonight before last meal, weighed 154.5...and then had another small but carb. rich diet and then a good run. 500 ml bottle of water after and feeling very good, and meeting goals.
What a difference it is having proper time to prepare. Thanks for the tips all, some really great stuff here and in PM.

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
web md says that apple cider vinegar won't do much of anything andexcept maybe help with blood pressure and or cholesterol. another sigth said pretty much the same, the claim of vinegar dissolving acid crystals in joints so they can be washed away preventing arthritis is also debunked. so any real data woul dbe appreciated, as a caveat vinegar has been know to erode tooth enamel and irritate (possibly burn) the esophagus or throat. in all fairness this is probably due to high exposure and may come from the if a little helps, then a lot must be better mindset. so lets see what we can find...

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
Take ACV in Tablets much better way of doing it. Any good Chemist or Herbalist stock them.

Exactly what you want to do. Sodium retains water, smaller meals throughout the day keeps your metabolism going....saunas and sauna suits are the worst way to go. Dehydrating yourself for a fight is unsafe. Your basically drying out your brain and the fluids around it.You will not take punches as well and can get seriously hurt. You need those fluids to absorb impact.

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
bro look, u can take everyones advice and just procrastinate, or you can take my scientifically proven facts and just incorporate them in your life, ok so before i start let me just say its up to you whether you want to stay fat or not.
I started cutting 5 weeks ago, i was 96kg, now im 90kg, and I have maintained most of my muscle, not all of it, but most of it because it is naturally impossible to keep your muscle the same while cutting.
Ok ill make it quick and simple:
1) No Sugars ('simple carbohydrates'- e.g. juice, soft drinks/sodas, fruit cake, ice cream, pie, chocolate, flavoured milk. some fucked up protein bars etc), No Saturated Fats (fat on animals, mcdonalds, nearly everything in this world... just read the back of the food label and see if the SATURATED fat exceed 3-4 grams. Monosaturated Fat is healthy (e.g avocado, peanuts, other nuts etc).
2) GYM (weights) four days a week. Cardio on other days (so therefore its 3 days of cardio).
The type of cardio you should do is High Intensity Interval Training. In other words what that is fundamentally is when you sprint as hard as you can for 1 minute, and then walk at a very slow rate for 1 minute, and you just go back and forth for around 20-30 minutes, trust me you're probably thinking oh shit 30minutes is nothing...bro..you haven't seen hell until you do this ok
3) Dieting- Have Carbohydates and Protein in the 3 VERY IMPORTANT MEALS-
*BREAKFAST
*PRE-WORKOUT MEAL
*POST-WORKOUT MEAL
Have about 40-50 grams of carbohydrates each meal (COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES IN OTHER WORDS-- 3 slices of wholemeal bread/ nearly a cup of oats/ a can of beans/ etc.)
As for your protein---HAVE PROTEIN IN EVERY MEAL------ i say this because you need to maintain your muscle because you are training so hard therefore muscle needs to be broken down and rebuilt. So have 35-40 grams of protein in each of your meals ( 180 grams of tuna/ a big steak/ 2 chicken snitzels/ 6 egg whites+ 125grams of cottage cheese etc, those are just examples for your understanding, but realistically you can do anything if u know how to choose healthy food)
Lastly have 5-6 meals a day, so basically because youll be training nearly every day your diet will look like this:
MEAL 1 ----Breakfast: Carbs+ Protein+ Fruit
Meal 2---------------Protein+ Vegetables
Meal 3------Pre Workout Meal--- Carbs + Protein + Vegetables
Meal 4------Post Workout Meal--- Carbs + Protein + Vegatables
Meal 5---------------Protein + Vegetables
Meal 6---------------Protein + a handful of nuts
Ay also, if you are a late trainer, and you are worried because you just had your post workout meal and it contains carbs and then you want to sleep, personally i think its best if you go to bed after an hour of your food entering your body, because thats what im doing and im seeing results.
I can guarantee you this diet will work, because its all science, bro i've lost 6kg in 5 weeks, so it works. Optimal weightloss range is roughly losing a kilo each week, so dont go expecting some bullshit jenny craig or atkins bullshit where its like 'HEY IVE LOST 30KG IN 1 WEEK' hahah, because in the real healthy world..shit doesn't work like that, unless something dangerous is gonna develop in your body soon.
Anyways good luck let me know if you take this on, and update me on your results after a month

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
Hi,
I used to be pretty obese and started putting on a lot of weight especially on my thighs and bottom in my late thirties. I started exercising as often as possible and also cut down on a lot of high calorie stuff. Unfortunately I hardly managed to lose any weight at all. I then recently read an article by a lady who claimed that she managed to lose nearly half of her weight using a particular weight loss product. I tried it out and it actually worked really well. Within 4 months I managed to shave off 65 pounds completely. The results were pretty amazing and I feel so much healthier and energetic now without having to carry all that extra weight around. You can read more about the lady's article at the link below
I Was Fat, Obese And Miserable

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
A quick note to thank most everyone's input. I got to the weight I needed for weigh in, and felt really great, especially after feuling up with a couple of meals and plenty of liquids after weigh in and before fight. I gained 6 lbs in 3 hrs haa. Weighed in at 153, was 159 right before jumping in the ring. (by yesterday when I got home I lost most of it and am now at 155 and increasing slowly)
The slow roughly pound a day drop came easily, with a lot of running, cardio based workouts and tailoring my diet based on limiting salts, carbs, but still having some pre workouts carbs. Focusing on eating fruits and veggies and a protein rich diet. Felt strong, albeit hungry going in, but overall, this was a great way to make weight to get a fight...and a safe one.
Thanks again. :)

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
When you're cutting weight before your next fight, take l-glutamine to deal with cravings. It'll help get rid of the feeling of "getting the munchies".

lol....
why do you make threads and expect to receive answers as basic as your mind can comprehend, everything i gave you was as basic as you needed, and is the most ideal. What i explained to you was right, anyone who wants to debate my points, can feel free to set up a thread debating the matter with me. Anyway for your height i dont even know why the hell you would want to lose weight, you're lanky from the sounds of it even if u have a low body fat percentage. Why dont you just maintain your weight or move up in division?

If you read his original post it alluded to the fact that he had posted his predicament in another thread. Which was that he needed to drop down to 69 kg just to get a fight as his opponent bailed on him. Therefor in such a short period of time your techniques aren't the most effective/relevant.

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
lol try reading before you answer a thread and start calling someone fat and a procrastinator. Thanks goodness I am neither, for it would have been kind of offensive to a person maybe over weight.
This was a thread about making weight for a fight. Not a "please call me a fatass and lazy and that should help me stop stuffing my face with donuts!" thread.
:p

LOL HAHAHA, i died laughing at the 'stop stuffing my face with donuts' comment. Ahh sorry man i was just rushin through the thread n gettin way ahead of myself.
Well if you want to lose weight quick for a fight, just to make the cut, i would aim to get rid of water weight (sauna, eating low sodium foods/drinks etc), and reducing your carbs to an absolute minimum, i would just have carbs pre workout and thats it. Anyways man
good luck, sorry bout the stuff before!

Re: Safest Ways To Cut Weight
Woooaaahhh, do not reduce water intake and do not keep carbs to an absolute minimum. Bad news.
Carbohydrate will fuel his workouts/fight. If he trains daily with a 'minumum amount of carbs' he will eventually deplete his body of glycogen. Protein will have to be sacrificed for energy so he'll lose muscle mass. Plus it's a terrible idea to go into a fight with low muscle glycogen levels.

Sorry, but this makes little sense. We are a forum who shares thoughts and idea to come to proper conclusions. As you will find in this thread, and many like it...is that you will get a variety of ideas, and they don't always agree, but generally we can figure out good game plan by accepting what does work, rejecting what doesn't...and ultimately building a foundation for ourselves and others through experience and knowledge.
In my case, I needed to lose 1 lb a day for 1 week to make weight for a fight, and was looking for the safest way to do it. I met my goals, had my fight, with lots of energy and minimal risk, so basically it was a success for me.
Still, would like to see and hear others ideas, for all knowledge, good and bad...has it's place.
