A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC fight
I can remember about 5 people on this site that thought Calzaghe would win that fight ;)

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I weren't on this site when it happened i joined Febuary 2007 but i watched Lacy coming through on a few under cards i thought he was the real deal but then when he went the full 12 with Omar Sheika i started to doubt his great punching power and ring general ship. Even against Reid he was hitting him with some illegal shots and stuff against Calzaghe i thought he had a punchers chance he just didn't and still doesn't move very well not for world championship fights he just isn't genuine world champion material. Taking nothing away from Peter Manfredo but Lacy only just beat him and thats nothing to do with the beating from Calzaghe the fact of the matter is he just isn't that good take his power away and he would get beat by most in my opinion. So yes i did think he was overrated and overhyped and vs Calzaghe it was that fight that would show us if he was or not and it turned out he was.
-
Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I did think Lacy was being somewhat overrated, but I thought it would be a tougher fight than it turned out being. It was one of my better picks.
-
Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I remember watching Super Bowl and Lacy was like The poster boy for the event and was being called The Middle weight Mike Tyson (not that he was a Middleweight) the belief in him was unreal in the US. He was the most exciting fighter with the most expectation out of anybody around at that time. Boxing Monthly had all the boxing writers predicting a Lacy win, how can so many people have being wrong? Or did he just take a career ending beating from a guy that had been World champion for 4 years before he even turned pro? I suspect he was overrated, but not as much as the 'hindsight' gang now say. If he hadn't fought Calzaghe and had been brought a long a bit slowe I think his career would've been very different.
Wasn't his amateur record something like 210-10 - the guy was no mug!

ICB did. ;D
I remember people were badly ridiculed for thinking Calzaghe could win.
I remember this because, even though i believed Calzaghe could win, the show of support for Lacy was so great that it made me think the likely outcome will be a Lacy victory
-
Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
That about sums it up for me too. Thought Joe could win, he'd just have to fight a virtually flawless fight. Who would have known he could do just that?
Thought Lacy would overpower him.
I wish we could dig up the posts from the time. Would show a few people up.
-
Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I did. Never ever saw what the fuss was about. Saw him beat Scott Pemberton who was basically a guy who didn't wanna fight no more - and he beat him by cuffing him to death. Sky were making out he was awesome, but i just wasn't that impressed. Same with the Robin Reid fight where him and the ref double teamed Reid.
Thought Joe would beat him, not as easily as he did but i still thought he would. Lacy showed a lot of heart and i have been a bit of a fan ever since but always saw him as a fairly limited fighter with over-rated power.

Make no mistake about it...95% of this site though he'd get put on his ass by the "new mini Tyson" most of the press thought this too.
A great Boxer will always beat a Puncher;)

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I joined right after the fight, I am the biggest lacy fan on this site STILL!! and I thought Jeff would bounce him around the ring like a basketball.. You have to remember before the fight, Joe was sheltered and was rematching guys like Veit, he was oft injured and if memory serves me correct he delayed the Lacy fight once already.. So even if Lacy was half of the hype he still had a great chance against a brittled hand padded champion that was supposedly afraid to fly and was content with fighting mediocre opponents...
I will say it took me to the Kessler fight to be a fan of Joe's, but even after the Lacy fight everyone thought he would step it up because he didnt have to many great fights left, then he fights Bika and Manfredo.. Most of his loyal fans were groaning over this..
Everyone who thinks Joe is gonna steamroll over Jones better reconsider.. Roy is the stronger quick handed fighter.. Joe can flurry with pitter patter Jones is a crisp accurate puncher to the likes Joe has never seen before, Roy has also been great about fighting off the ropes of late and firing in good body shots and uppercuts.. Joe dosent have a stellar defense and if Hop can put him on his ass with a right you best believe Jones can do the same.. Joe eats a steady diet of straight rights and Jones will be the chef. Gonna be a close one. We have seen Roy turn human already a few years back and be effective, I hope at 37 Joe dosent slip seeing fighters have been known to get old in a round

Seeing as how the majority thought Lacy would win, and going by the way he was soundly thrashed, I guess that means Lacy was overrated. Although only the people who picked Calzaghe knew that. ;)

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I knew who they both were at the time but never followed either of them. At that time, I was strictly into the welterweights and below as to me that is where all the excitement was..

Agree 100% and i got a funny feeling that Jones could well stop Calzaghe...
Jones is Dangerous for a good few rounds and no way is this an easy fight at all.
Jones has more power and Joe can't hurt him at all, both have pretty equal skill too so this is a great matchup for me and it doesn't matter that they are meeting late in their careers as it's the same for both fighter.
This couls all hinge on Roy's fitness;)

Why does him being soundly thrashed automatically mean he was overrated, can't it just mean the other guy fought an amazing fight?

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I was just getting into boxing then, I don't think I was even a member of this forum yet, so I had no idea who either guy was until well after the fight.
What's the point of this post? I'm not sure...

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
Do they still have the posts on this forum that date back that far?? My take on that fight is totally irrelevant as I was still getting more into boxing at the time and had never even seen Calzaghe fight, and not much of Lacy. However, what I had seen were his full fights against Sheika and Donnel Wiggins. Anyone who had seen those fights should have been able to expect that Calzaghe(or any good fighter;D) had at least a decent chance of winning. The simple fact is Lacy wasn't as good as he was being heralded as. Even the biggest Calzaghe fan should be able to see that in hindsight he was flawed and lacked skills. It's not so easy to go against the grain when a guy has a lot of hype around him though, so credit for anyone who actually did fully predict a dominating Calzaghe victory, though I doubt that includes anyone.

The threads were all lost :( but Trust me very few people on here on anywhere were tipping Calzaghe, but nearly everybody 'knew' after the fight that Lacy was overrated ;)

Valid question I suppose. There are no hard and fast answers, it's all pretty subjective IMO. Still, if Lacy was as good as people thought he was, ( The next Tyson, etc.) he would've put up a bit more of a fight. Lacy was less of a known quantity, Calzaghe had been around long enough that there shouldn't be too many surprises from him.
Probably it's a little of both. Lacy overrated and Calzaghe exceeds expectations.

To be fair, sometimes it works that way with exciting young fighters. It's very easy to take fights so selective that there flaws aren't really on display until they have to take the real step up to world class and face a different animal. Just because people didn't know that Lacy was an overhyped rookie who was overrated before Calzaghe dummied him doesn't neccesarily mean they are wrong to believe so afterwards;) Go back and watch him fight Omar Sheika, or Donell Wiggins(who has been KTFO early by any other live body he's fought).

I do agree with the both of you. I do think that although Joe is at the end of his career he is still at the tail end of his prime where I feel Roy is past it. Although Jones still has tools the bag is much smaller then it used to be. I have, time and time again, doubted Joe and was handily fed my words.
I believe it will be a Joe win due to sheer activity. This is why I also agree about Roy's fitness. I don't think he's capable of hanging with the much more active Calzaghe. Jones's punches will do more damage but Joe has a hell of a chin as well...
Will Roy get steam rolled? No. Weill he lose? I believe so
Calzaghe by Majority...
Joe, don't make me look like a toolbox, now... I've always gone against you before;D

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
He may have struggled a bit against Sheika but he was given a pass for that, Vanderpool was a great victory and a victory not many gave to him. The hype started really after the Robin Reid fight where he just looked ridiculous, and then followed up against Pemberton.
I thought he would win, my favorite fighter and actually in a roundabout way the reason I joined the site. I thought Calzaghe could outbox him, he had the talent to do it but was too knuckleheaded and would eventually square up and trade inside with Lacy's power and that's how Lacy would win over. I still think to this day I was reasoned in why I thought Lacy would win, because in the first round of he fight Calzaghe stepped up and went toe to toe with him. It was a bad matchup stylistically for Joe because he could have got into some trouble but I guess Lacy just wasn't the guy to do it.
So not me, but I don't think I was disillusioned with who Jeff Lacy really was either.

Your damn right i knew it was obvious in his fights against Omar Sheika, Syd Vanderpool, he wasn't nowhere near as good as the hype. He only got overrated because of his win over a shot undertrained Robin Reid, and Robin Reid gave Joe Calzaghe his toughest fight, which made armchair fans think Jeff Lacy would destroy Joe Calzahghe because he destroyed Robin Reid.
Also his Amateur record got him overrated aswell, but funnily enough he didn't do so well in the Olympics. He was stopped in the 3rd round at the Olympics, another reason he got overrated was because of his power. Power punchers do tend to get very overrated.
-
Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
I bought in to a point, I actually picked Robin Reid to beat him but by the time the Calzaghe fight had come around I decided to go with Lacy. Remember watching the Mitchell fight and thinking Joe was just too wild.
I remember a Lacy-Hopkins thread where you would have thought it would have just been better to shoot Hopkins rather than let him in the ring with Lacy.
All this being said, about half of the people on here picked Gatti. Over Floyd.
Anyway I'm looking forward to the point when this becomes more than a two fighter board again.

Hah no kidding huh. I remember that Hopkins Lacy thread as well, funny to think about now. Hopkins would've beat him like a red headed step child at any point.

I wasn't actually on about anyone here i was on about the public, who aren't hardcore fans like us. I can assure you now most of the public/armchair fans who were picking Jeff Lacy, had hardly see any of his fights and had certainly not seen him struggle with Omar Sheika, Syd Vanderpool, and i find they often listen to these so caled *experts* rather than going with there own opinion.
Because everyone i knew was saying "That Jeff Lacy is gonna smash Joe Calzaghe" and i asked them how many fights have you seen of Jeff Lacy ? "The Robin Reid one" i then asked have you seen his fights vs Syd Vanderpool or Omar Sheika ? there reply "Who are they" which is the mentality of your armchair fans Ouma.
Thirdly i honestly believe that even hardcore fans, had not seen that many Jeff Lacy fights. Or they were letting the hype or the experts, make them change there mind, and actually forget about his flaws and his previous struggles. And just focusing on the Robin Reid fight.

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
;D A lot of people who picked Lacy had seen the Vanderpool fight, the Sheika fight, the Reid, on and on.
He was on ESPN 2 coming up, of course people had seen Lacy fight.
Boxing writers, knowledgeable fans, dumb fans, etc. All across the board. All seen him fight numerous times no matter how hard you find that to believe Ice and still picked him.
At the same time they'd also seen Calzaghe look kind of crappy against some fairly average fighters.

I've seen almost every Joe Calzaghe fight and he has hardly ever struggled, only against awkward fighters like David Starie, Kabary Salem, Sakio Bika, Robin Reid, but thats because he allowed them to because he fights too much on the inside at times. And allows fighters to rough him up on the inside. But look at Joe Calzaghe's best performances against Charles Brewer, Chris Eubank, etc. Its obvious IMO skill wise Joe Calzaghe is way above Jeff Lacy.
These so called experts also do talk alot of crap sometimes, and i have my own opinion. And i think people do allow there opinion to get changed very easily listening to the hype and these so called experts, rather than going with there gut instinct and there own opinion.

Re: A show of hands - who knew Lacy was an overrated overhyped rookie before the JC f
Lacy got the props he deserved he was a stella amature he also looked very good beating good names.
That said i knew Joe would beat him. As soon as Joe won Lacy became over-hyped. Just as Hopkins was old and shot after Joe beat him. Noth turned out to be crap.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the point when this becomes more than a two fighter board again.
I also picked Arturo aver Floyd...
Just give up mate ;D
Oumafan made a fair point, Calzaghe was coming off breaking his hand against Ashira, the rematch with Veit (which wasn't even shown on TV in Britain) and arguably his worse showing ever against Salem.
No wonder people were picking Lacy.

That said i knew Joe would beat him. As soon as Joe won Lacy became over-hyped. Just as Hopkins was old and shot after Joe beat him. Noth turned out to be crap.
What *good names* did Jeff Lacy beat ?
