Is Pacquaio really smaller then Mayweather?
People say look at how Pacquaio started his career at 106, but he was 15 years old, Mayweather fought at 105 or 106 amateurs at that age. Only in his last year as an amateur did Mayweather go to the featherweight division. However, I have heard many times that as a pro Mayweather could have started at 122 or 126, but they wanted him to start his career a little higher so he could eventually fight De La Hoya and company. More importantly now that they've filled out, Pacquaio weighed 147 for a lightweight fight, at the same weight Mayweather was coming into the ring at 140. Pacquaio weighed in at 144 against Marquez at 130! That's a huge weight gain for a guy at 130, Mayweather certainly never weighed anywhere close to that much at 130, I think he gained 6 pounds against COrrales. All in all definitely MAyweather is the taller lankier fighter, but I think there is a realistic argument to be made that Pacquaio is thicker, and quite possibly the same size as Mayweather naturally. I wouldn't be surprised if Pacquaio weighs more coming into the ring against Oscar then Mayweather has weighed in his career(he actually lost a pound from the weigh-in to when he fought Oscar based on some sourced which put him at 149 when he came into the ring). That is the heaviest Mayweather has ever been, and thats 2-3 pounds more then Pacquaio weighed in at in the lightweight division.
THe reason I am saying this is that Pacquaio is a lot bigger then people are giving him credit for. I believe he has the potential to make this transition without very much trouble. Beating Oscar De La Hoya is another story, but I don't think the size disparity will be all that much more then when Mayweather or Whitaker fought Oscar. I think the key fact is that they were among the two best defensive fighters ever while Manny definitely isn't.

Mayweather and Pacquiao are the same size. Floyd has about an inch in height. But in functional boxing terms, they are the same size.

They are not the same size especially in boxing terms...
Floyd is 2 - 3 inches taller and he has 5 or 6 inch reach advantage..
Also the frame size of someone matters...Pacquiao is much smaller in an over all build wise then Floyd.....
Tommy Hearns was 6'1 with a 78 inch reach...Mike Tyson was 5'9 1/2 inches (NO not 5'11 or 6' like he is often listed..) Tyson was at 215-220 in his prime years...If Hearns bulked to 215 would you believe that he would be the ssme size as a legit HW

There's a definite difference but it's not massive.
To me it's less about size but about styles.
Floyd is simply a better technical boxer than virtually anyone else and was able to move up because he relied more on outstanding boxing ability, defense, speed and elusiveness.
Pacquaio is a far mor aggressive, physical fighter than Floyd and needs his greatest boxing assets, power, strength, ferocity, chin, toughness will be reduced with the step up in weight.
I don't think he can beat Oscar, although Oscar I don't think will go hard on Manny anyways. I think it's going to be little more than an exhibition fight really with both fighters being cautious and not a great deal of action.
But having said that Manny has already moved through several divisions and if anything has looked better and more destructive the higher up he's gone. He's an amazing fighter.

Re: Is Pacquaio really smaller then Mayweather?
I guess I'm somewhere in the middle on this.. I fully agree this fight is tough for Pacquiao due to style over size the more I think about it. But, there's also the fact that Pacquiao is jumping up 12 pounds in weight, two whole divisions, when he only just debuted at lightweight. Whether he is natrually big enough to fight at Welter and whethere he puts the weight on properly and has adaquate preperation is a bit different. Mayweather had a good few fights at 140 and 147 after he left lightweight, and got used to making that weight over a couple years. Definetly very interesting to see what Manny will weigh in at for this fight.. Id say he shouldn't need to weigh over 140 personally, just doesn't seem like it would be smart to try and bulk up to be stronger against DLH.

Weight Classes not height classes...Tyson is bigger them Williams....

Re: Is Pacquaio really smaller then Mayweather?
I've seen pictures of Pacquaio way closer in height to Oscar than that. Also Pacquaio is further away from camera, NOtice HOpkins who was way taller then Oscar in their fight? He looks the same size as Oscar because he is further away from the camera when he is actually 2 1/2-3 inches taller then Oscar.
Mayweather has been been measured height wise from 5'7-5'8, He didn't look any taller then Judah who is 5'7
Pacquaio is 5'6 1/2 which puts the height difference anywhere from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Pacquaio is the same height as Hatton, and Hatton didn't look that much shorter then Mayweather.
As for size at every weight class they have been at Pacquaio waist, chest, legs, have all been bigger. Of course Mayweather who pumped up for welterweight would be bigger when comparing him at WW to Pacquaio at lightweight, but they still weighed around the same weight regardless. If Pacquaio is about an inch shorter then MAyweather and weighs in 5-10 pounds heavier then Mayweather at WW then I would assume he's the same size if not bigger, Hatton weighed in at 160 against Collazo, and he weighed 155 to MAyweather's 149 (according to outside soures) in their fight. Hatton IMO looked broader then Mayweather
People seem to be ignoring the fact that Mayweather isn't a natural WW, people wondered if he would even be effective at 140 after his Jose Luis Castillo fights because They thought he would be TOO small.

Re: Is Pacquaio really smaller then Mayweather?
I think it's fair to say that Oscar has all the physical advantages in this fight. For Manny to go from 130 to 147 bascically overnight and fight somebody who is massive at that weight is a hell of an ask. Mayweather had a lot of time to grow into 147 and moving up a division presented nothing like the difficulties Manny is facing. I'm hoping he manages to stay out of the way of Oscar's left hook and outpoints him though, I'm 100% behind Manny on this one.

Well, you hit the nail on the head with that last sentence.
I made Floyd a solid favorite to beat Oscar, I gave him about a 75-80% chance of winning. I have Manny has an underdog against Oscar, I give Manny about a 30-35% chance of winning. He's a live 'dog, but still a 'dog nonetheless.
And the difference isn't the size, it's that Floyd and Pernell had the defensive skillset to prevent Oscar from ever landing a big flush left hand, whereas Manny doesn't. You knew there was a chance that Oscar would never be able to land a big flush shot on either Floyd or Pernell, whereas you know that at some point, Manny is going to get hit flush with something big. At that point we'll see if he can take it.

Re: Is Pacquaio really smaller then Mayweather?
Pacman is giving up too much size for his style. He is a bruiser and he'll be going in against a very big Welter weight who still has a great left hook. I've got Oscar in this fight, Pacman doesn't have the style to overcome the huge size difference.

You do not judge by how close they are eye to eye...Some peoplke have longer necks then others...It is the shoulder difference you judge by...
If anything the body mass if much more signifigant between the two then it was between DLH and PBF

Re: Is Pacquaio really smaller then Mayweather?
How will the mass be different? Oscar is coming down to 147 so he likely won't weigh in as high as he does at 154, and Mayweather was 149-150 coming into the ring against Oscar because he doesn't really put weight on from weigh-in to the fight. Pacquaio weighed 147 for a lightweight fight. Thats more then Mayweather weighed against Judah, Sharmba, and within 3 pounds of what Mayweather weighed in at against Oscar, Carlos, and Ricky. I don't get how you conclude that Pacquaio will weigh less than Mayweather did?

What will the weight difference be when they get in the ring?

mayweather got a few inches on Pacquaio and is overall bigger
but not even close to matching Pacquaio in strength

you dont see the difference?
And again some people have longer necks then others.some posture up better then others.....It is the body mass that counts....
So are we to agree that this lady is the same size as Roy Jones http://www.gluckman.com/LongNk.jpg
because her neck allows it to be so?
