fighter of 2008 so far
Joe Calzaghe - proved himself as one of the all time greats with a superb come back against hopkins to earn a well fought points win and the respect stateside he had longed for years
Bernard Hopkins - Another year of B-Hop being written off, another year for him to prove the doubters wrong. Destruction of Pavlik and questionably a controversial loss to an unbeaten calzaghe at 43 years old B-Hop came one judge away from ending 2 world class unbeaten fighters records.
Chad Dawson - 2 big names he has gone through and looks a complete natural at 175 pounds and could go on to dominate the division for years to come. Excellent performance against a revitalised Tarver.
Antonio Margarito - Put out the performance of his life on the biggest stage of all and proved me and many other doubters wrong to not just beat miguel but actually stop him.
Timothy Bradley - awesome year for a man many thought may of been chucked in at the deep end slightly too early. Arguably shock of the year against junior witter and went on to give a solid showing against cherry to prove he really is in for the long haul.
Manny Pacquiao - Another weight class, another world championship. This man knows no boundarys and a victory over de la hoya at 147 will surely see him take this title without a shadow of a doubt and cement his place as one of the all time greats.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
So far I'd say B-Hop,took Calzaghe to the wire with a his gameplan in that fight, made it very very close.
And then utterly dominated Pavlik whilst being a fairly large under dog.

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Id say Margarito, he TKOed a real p4p fighter in what I think was the most exciting fighter of the year, and also a good contender (Cintron) ,
The rest of the boxers mentioned all have some "holes" this year, which could count them out, though I am very close to saying B hop over Margarito,
anyway, these are the 'holes'
Bernard Hopkins - lost to calzaghe
Chad Dawson - Imo lost to Johnson or at best looked very bad vs Johnson
Timothy Bradley - awesome year but not fighting p4pounders like the rest on this list
Manny Pacquiao - questionable performance vs Marquez you could say. But his biggest test is coming up soon which would by far make him fighter of the year.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Margarito for me with the Cintron and Cotto wins.

Marquez, diaz, de-la hoya in 12months would exceed anything anyone else has done this year.
I have my doubts though. ODLH should be too big for him SURELY
I voted for Margarito on the basis of the performance of the year and the fact he beat THE man at his own game and had to walk through hell to do so.

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Margo.
Jury still out on Pac, but a win would do it for me.

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
I'l go with Margarito, he won the most significant fight of the year and without controversy.
I'm still baffled at how people can think Hopkins is more deserving of fighter of the year than Calzaghe.
Calzaghe's win is taken as a moral defeat it seems in the eyes of many whilst Hopkins actually gets credit for keeping it close.
Calzahge beat Hopkins so how can Hopkins be ahead of him in the fighter of the year stakes
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
I think it's between Calzaghe, Pacquiao, and Margarito. Hopkins has a loss on his record this year (even though it's controversial, a loss is a loss).
Calzaghe needs to beat Jones and then he would be a good candidate to win it. Even though Jones and Hopkins are past it, on paper it looks pretty sweet.
Pacquiao won the Ring Magazine title from Marquez at 130 then took a title from Diaz at 135. If he wins against De La Hoya, then he's a no brainer for fighter of the year.
But, unless Calzaghe beats Jones and Manny beats Oscar, Margarito is ahead in the fighter of the year race.

Chad has had a good year but he still isn't a mainstream name which is why I think he won't get the nod for Fighter of the Year.

Yes he was.

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
...i picked dawson, any guy who shuts up tarver for at least even a little while get's my vote.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Got to go with Tony...Not just because he won those 2 fights and 2 world title in 2008 but how he won them...He dominated those bouts
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
I picked Hopkins, after rewatching the Calzaghe fight I feel that he beat Calzaghe (by one round), I also feel that his domination of Pavlik, a fight in which he was a 4/1 underdog is the most impressive performance I have seen in a long time. I could just have easily gone with Margarito, I guess I'd have it a draw between the two.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Have to go with My man Margarito. He kicked in the front door and demanded over due respect.
Suprise or one on the rise of the year I'd say Timothy Bradley.Rewatched His fights with Witter and Cherry last night.Hell of a refreshing story, attitude and has nice hand speed.Needs some refining but definatly not a flash in the pan Imo,think he will be around awhile.

Like I said, even if it is controversial, he still lost this year. And Pavlik was def not fighter of the year last year.

completely agree
the guys just come completely under the radar and surprised us all.
I make no qualms about not having a clue who timothy bradley was before the witter fight but having seen that contest, the cherry fight and several others id definitely put money on him being around for a while and possibly dominating the 140pound division once hatton calls it a day (pending berto doesnt move down to 140 as its been suggested)
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
At this stage my vote goes to Chad Dawson.

Margarito has been hyped since the whole Mayweather fiasco, I don't see how he flew under the radar at all. A fair number of people (not me) were picking him to upset Cotto as well, not that that diminishes his victory in any way.

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Fighter of the Year is still up for grabs depending on the outcome of these fights:
Calzaghe vs. RJJ
Pac vs. ODLH
Mijares vs. Vic
Margarito
I'd like to say that for me Hopkins would fall more under "Comeback Fighter of year" then "Fighter of the year"... Just my opinion.
So far I have:
Nate Campbell
Guillermo Jones
Hopkins
Daniel Santos
*If Vic defeats Mijares I would give him the award if he loses I'd give it to Nate.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
I love me some BCD but he falls short...
The other guys are facing P4P fighters, BCD hasn't.
Also Bradley?
You must have ran out of names... ;D
Mijares or even Haye have got a better arguement.

Nate beat Diaz who was an amazing fighter but not a Cotto

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
This is going to sound crazy but I think Roman Gonzalez deserves a mention because of his jumping into the international scene over Niida.
Joan Guzman deserves a mention because he is on so many p4p lists and he hasn't even fought this year.
If Mijares beats Vic he will have picked up 2 extra straps in the puzzle, and that's against pretty good competition in his weight class (If he beats Vic he needs to go after Montiel next)
JuanMa if he looks good against Medina should be mentioned as well.
My final pick from your list is BCD though.

Guzman who?
NO WAY he is to be considered.. He doesn't deserved it.. He better clean his act first and then we may consider him. No freebies here..

Agreed;D

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Id say Calzaghe as he has fought the best throughout his long career and not just waited till his last 3 fights to fight guys who are not clinically dead.
-

vote for margo its his year

Right but the "Fighter of the *Year*" is awarded to a fighter for his accomplishments on that given year. Not on a overall career.

Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Has to be Tony Margarito. Destorying one of the biggest punches in Kermit Cintron then taking forcing Miguel Cotto (The heavy favourite may I add) in a FOTY candidate to quit. Great year for The Tijuana Tornado.
Also a lttle credit should go to Timothy Bradley I may add. Unknown to many fans at the start of 2008. He was a massive underdog against Junior Twitter and went into his backyard and gave him a bit of a lesson IMO. I had him up by 3/4 rounds. A great overhand right shot as well to put Twitter on his ass.
People were then wondering whether that was due to how bad Twitter looked and he then went up against The Cherry Bomb. He dominated that fight as well proving he deserves to be with the elite at 140 pounds. The kid has a bright future no doubt.

Nah, Hopkins made a fool of himself in the Calzaghe fight with the low blow play acting shit, I lost a lot of respect for him because of that. The Pavlic fight was a great performance though, so I'd have him second.
Margarito gets my vote though. Stopped a true champion and great P4P fighter in Cotto.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
Hopkins for me but it was close with Margarito. Margarito-Cotto and Hopkins-Pavlik both left me in awe, but Hopkins did it with more boxing skills. Huge credit to both fighters though, both are in my top five or so favourite fighters now.
-
Re: fighter of 2008 so far
For me its Pacquiao, his close win over Marquez was just as good if not better than Calzaghe's over Hopkins, his distruction of Diaz & still with the DLH fight to come!!!
