how good was he really?
George Foreman once said, andrew could beat any heavyweight in the division.
if he didnt have those anxiaty attacks reckon he could of been really really good i mean he beat bowe twice really didnt he, he quit against tyson & gave it away to Grant and prob threw away loads more fights i cant think of
golota was a fav of mine as well, actually he did get beat in the first bowe fight but not by bowe, but by that guy with mobile in his hand, do u remember that?
You must of never seen his fight against the overweight Samson Po'uha, he knocked Andrew Golota senseless. And was on the verge of stopping him, until Andrew Golota bit his neck.
Andrew Golota is overrated he beat up on a very shot Riddick Bowe, who i thought would of stopped him in the 4th round of there 2nd fight. Had Andrew Golota not of hit im in his carrot and onions, about 6 times that round.
But Riddick Bowe also couldn't deal with good outside fighters, Tony Tubbs outboxed Riddick Bowe in his prime. Tyrell Biggs had him totally off his game with his flicking jab for about 4 rounds.
Andre Golota was a good skilled Heavyweight but nowhere near as good, as people make him out to be. And if he was "Special" like people claim with or without a good mental game, he easily should of atleast won a world title off fighters like John Ruiz, Chris Byrd. Andrew Golota lacks something for me, and its not just his mental game either.
Plus to someone who replied above no he didn't just quit against Mike Tyson, he quit because he was losing and was on the verge of being stopped. And Michael Grant knocked him senseless and would of stopped him, regardless if Andrew Golota would of quit or not.
In the Tyson fight it was actually a good thing he quit...He quit because he did not feel right....After the bout he went to the hospital and there was swelling on th brain...He basically had a concussion without losing consciousness....The reports stated another hard shot could have killed him....
Lou Duva who was irate with Golota during the bout for quitting actually made a public apology to him for doubting his heart and for trying to make him fight when he stated there was something wrong with him/......
So aside from any personal opinions as a fighter that one thing is something that can not be held against him...
As for my opinion of Golota....He was a big strong HW with better then average skills and decent chin who could have held a version of the title but seemed unable to compose himself during stressful times in the ring...causing big mistakes
it was hard being an andrew golota fan. your either frustrated at him or feeling bad. Last I watch him was against brewster, and he totally got smoked. that was sad.
If Golata didnt have bad luck,he'd have no luck at all.
well i'm not sayin that Golota is the greatest thing since Tyson or anything like that, but he did get screwed over agains both Byrd and Ruiz, he should have been WBA/IBF heavyweight champ, but on that same not, Brewster took him out in a round, and well should have been WBO/WBA/IBF champion
With the right shrink on his team, Golota would've gone a lot further in boxing.
From memory I thought Andrew was completly perplexed and even looked scared of Tyson from the word go?
When its all said and done, and defiantly for some of the wrong reasons....it was an exciting ride.It was as if he had a panic button affixed to his grey matter....when it got deep and adversity came calling,he retreated like a turtle hiding in his shell.Strong jab, nice power, hard chin, built like a tank....all for not and the he is the living testament to what is meant when people say "Boxing is 75% mental".He did not have it upstairs, period.
That being said,I thought he deserved the fight vs, John Ruiz.Fought very well.and played a part in getting that fat mouthed lunatic Norm Stone (?) something expelled from ringside LMAO,Priceless viewing that was.You could argue the call with Byrd as well Imo.Marion Wilson was jobbed in their rematch. That look in his eyes after Lewis bludgeoned him to the canvas was just amazing....." :o I see dead people"
when ring magazine run an article on the big four heavys-holyfield, bowe, lewis, ruddock - big george was the only expert(make your own mind up abt that) that said that Lennox was the best, and there must of been 20 experts. this was before lewis destroyed ruddock.
big george was always media friendly, nice chap, i aint been lucky enough to meet him just saw him at the tyson francis fight & he was givin out pure love to the fans.
There's usually a method to Foreman's madness. It's just his way of making a point. e.g. the way Hopkins was dominating Trinidad, getting tired was one of the bigger risks. I'm not sure what Bowe was doing that got George's attention, but the Ali courage remark was obviusly a reference to Ali doing the rope-a-dope in Zaire. That took quite a bit of balls I would say.
Andrew the Ball Breaker.
The one thing I kind of liked about Golota is that he get himself DQd or seem to quit, and he never really looked bothered by what people said about him and never really showed ant reaction to anything. Even his last fight, he f@cked up his arm and he just kept looking at it, never really grimaced or anything but it mustve hurt like hell.
