Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Toney: I’ll KO Hopkins!
By Francisco Salazar
Heavyweight contender James Toney is never at a loss of words. However, his latest proclamation would make even the most hardened beat writers in boxing scratching their heads. “I know that my promoter (Dan Goossen) is seeking the best fights for me in the heavyweight division. However, I am willing to drop down to 185 pounds and fight Bernard Hopkins. They say that he is a legend. I will prove that I am the living legend. He is a good fighter, but I will knock him out.” Toney won a close twelve round split-decision over Fres Oquendo in December at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Morongo. Hopkins, who has never weighed more than 174 pounds during his 20 year professional career, soundly defeated Kelly Pavlik by unanimous decision in October.

Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
I doubt Toney could make 185 but if he could without being too drained it would be interesting because they are both quite defensive fighters but this could make both men feel a bit more adventurous.
At the end of the day this should have happened years ago when Jones kicked both their asses!
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Hows Toney gonna make 185? ;D
I'd like to see this fight just to hear the shit-talk beforehand.
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
That means he has to lose 45 additional pounds. That would be a miracle. He would look like Chris Byrd I bet trying to come back down....you would think he would try cruiserweight first...

Yeah Just look how bad Jones looked when he dropped back from heavy too. The weight loss should be left to young men and even then they need to be very careful what they are doing!

Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Toney is done.
There I actually said it. I had hoped Toney would try and get active following the Oquendo showing and try and get back in the mix at HW and fast. He obviously has no desire for it. What on earth happened to fighting Thompson or even giving Oquendo a rematch if there was nothing else on?
But to talk about going down to 185 pounds at 40 to fight Hopkins is just crazy talk. Toney can't even get down to 225 pounds despite repeated promises that he would "be in shape this time". Toney and 185 pounds is nuts at this late stage.
Why not just get a fight at HW and just get into relatively decent shape for that for once? Makes me think Toney is all but done with nowhere to go. :-\
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
This is just Toney running his mouth. I doubt he could even get down to 215, let alone 185.

The pre-fight banter would be "LEGEN...wait for it, hope you're not lactose intoletrant cause the second part of that word is...DARY!"
If Toney somehow found a way to make 185 the fight would be cancelled because Toney would pass out during the weigh in...
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Also, as bad as Toney looked against Oquendo, I'd pick Hopkins to beat him even if the fight were at heavyweight and Toney weighed 225 or 230.
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
agreed this fight is 10 years late, I always felt Toney could handle Hopkins just fine.... I doubt James could lose the weight, but if he did it wouldnt be as bad as Byrd or Jones, since he is more fat than muscle and his style isint really based off athleticism or unreal reflexes.
Shame it wont happen:-\
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
I'd pick Toney if he could get down to that weight for the simple fact that he's used to being bigger and he'd finally have enough crack in his punches to put a dent in somebody. But then again, Tarver had pretty much the same idea.
I have no doubt that if Toney really signed for the fight that he could make the weight. It's a matter of will with him and I don't think he would sign if he didn't have the ability to stay away from the refrigerator. That being said, Toney looks like he's thinking about a cheese burger at the end of every fight so I doubt he'll fight as anything else other than HW.
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
The only thing he will KO is the nearest Chinese Buffet. He has become a delusional slob who needs to STFU.
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Hopkins would easily beat Toney at this stage.
Toney is past it.
There is no way Toney can make 185 anyway.

I think its goin a bit far to say Jones kicked Hopkins ass, it was one of the least eventful fights in history, yeah I think Jones won it but it was not as dominating a performance as against Toney.
Can't see Toney making the weight & even if he did I think he would be horribly weight-drained a la ODLH-Pacquiao, & B-Hop would end up using his speed to beat him down. Toney should really try & use his name to get a title shot at Valuev

Even if the fight was signed, I think Toney has ZERO will power to drop weight! He loves food too much and I'm not saying that in a joking manner. I doubt he has the discipline regardless of what was offerred to him to make the fight...

Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
The only possible chance you could give james toney is to win by doing something that Roy Jones, Joe Calzaghe, jermain taylor, winky wright, kelly pavlik, oscar de la hoya, felix trinidad etc etc all couldnt do and actually stop hopkins.
Otherwise even at 185 toney will still be a very straight forward fighter that hopkins will simply run rings around and take a unanimous points decision or even a late stoppage.

I dont think the fight can physically happen at 185 pounds. Not within this year anyway. Toney is probably floating around 250 pounds as we speak. I just think its utterly bizarre to be talking about Hopkins. It really makes me think that Toney is looking to talk his way into the only possible payday he can make after his recent crappy showings.
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
I always wanted to see these guys fight, but the timing never seemed quite right. Its still not imo. Toney probably could get down 185 and he would. The payday would motivate him. But, at 40 I dont think that its a smart thing to do, could turn out like Chris Byrd. Hopkins would likely be more comfortable at that weight, even though hes never fought there before.

probably true
it would beg the question why he is shouting his mouth off about a 175pound ring master when he looked completely past it against the likes of oquendo

Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
The first thing I thought when I seen this was liposuction. There is no way in hell this man will make 185 lbs. F**K Toney.

It would generate a fair bit of money, I guess. Toney himself probably wont allow that he has slipped considerably too.

On the contrary Toney is a slick counterpuncher, he is not Pavlik nor will he come in without a plan b

He is also 40 years of age, and would be losing over 20kg's in weight to face Hopkins. Hopkins is older, but always in shape. Im a long time Toney fan, but the whole proposition sounds absurd.

Toney's never been stopped... although I haven't seen him rocked like he was against Oquendo a couple times. That was sorely disappointing to watch. ... and to think I call myself a Toney fan... :(
It's pathetic how fat he let himself get. He was whooping Rahman's ass though in that fight before last! So I wouldn't go as far as to say he hasn't looked good in forever...
Granted that was only 3rnds, and it is Rahman we are talking about

I hear you miles, but the point of my post was to show that obviously HTH knows little about Toney to say he is a straight forward fighter;)

To be honest i think he's knowledge is very little on alot of boxers, his post about Pernell Whitaker in the other thread was absurd. Now this one ain't much better, he needs to watch his fights against.
Michael Nunn
Iran Barkley
Vassiliy Jirov
Mike McCallum
Charles Williams
ETC.
James Toney is a throwback fighter he can box beautifully rolling with the punches, he can find angles brilliantly his countering skills are top notch. James Toney is like a boxer from the 1950's he really is the complete package, he just often didn't train enough which let him down.

Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
"...by Hopkins I mean 14 hamburgers and by KO I mean eat."

He`s a 40 year blob who would have to conceed an endless amount of muscle to get down to 185 and you seriously think he`s gonna do anything other than attempt to go straight to route 1???
PS:Ive seen a good dozen Toney fights so once again JT your accusations fall on death ears:rolleyes:

Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Toney knows he's almost through and is just looking for his biggest possible payday before it's all over for him. If Hopkins doesn't fight Calzaghe it'd be a good way for them both to go out.

Well with Calzaghe retired now Hopkins may well consider the Toney fight
Toney has no chance of finding Hopkins chin. He couldnt even find Oquendos chin . Even an ancient Holyfield found Oquendos chin
Toney will lose on points and claim he ws weight drained.

If you have watched a good dozen Toney fights then you should know he isint a STRAIGHT FORWARD FIGHTER!!!!! Never has been, why the hell would he be one now:confused:
There is a big damn difference saying YOU THINK TONEY AT 40 AND LOSING SO MUCH WEIGHT, MIGHT REVERT TO HAVING TO BE A STRAIGHT FORWARD FIGHTER IN YOUR OPINION....
OR
James Toney is a straight forward fighter, like you claimed which he clearly is quite the opposite, seeing he is known for being one of the best defensive fighting counter punchers of the past 50 years
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
;D
Absolutely absurd.
Toney would have to go on the Christian Bale diet from that movie The Machinist to make 185.
Not that it matters, he's shot, Hopkins beats him at heavyweight or 185, he's not Roy Jones shot but he's pretty shot.
-
Re: Toney: I'll KO Hopkins
Man I have always liked Toney, the swagger, the tight layed back pivots and crunching 6 inch rights. But he really needs to hang them up.Being real here....there is no way in helz that he's making 185,forget about it.He could amputate both legs and still struggle. Two of my all time favs but a literal case of the two going in opposite directions, with Hopkins I cannot believe I'm saying that,at 43 ??This is one of those "p4p" dream matchups that never happened back in the day,I would have picked Hopkins in a nip & tuck fight.

......JAMES TONEY vs Takiru Kobayashi
NATHAN'S HOT DOG CHALLENGE 2009!!!!!
I don't know if that would be his biggest pay day but I think the selling point would be "all you can eat and maybe a little more" ...I can see James now "ooooh where do I sign?"

He was cruiserweight champion before after beating Jirov. But I think he'd have to lose more than 45 pounds. He walks around now at about 250. I really don't think it would be possible at his age to get to 185. He's just trying to drum up word of mouth as his career winds down. Probably next he'll want a rematch with Jones.
