Can you name a Cherry Picker?
In recent years, Oscar De La Hoya has been accused of doing some serious cherry picking. I tend to agree with that at least insofar as the lomg intervals between his bouts. But can you name any others?

Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
Anthony Mundine, Chris John come to mind.

Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
90% of Hatton's career was spent cherry picking

Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
You can argue Calzaghe, he fought alot of questionable defenses. He could of fought big names during that time, they were around. Eubank, B-Hop and Jones were all past their primes when he fought em.
-
Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
Hector Camacho. He fought the likes of Leonard and Duran when they were well past their best.
-

As well as Edwin Rosario and Julio Cesar Chavez. Camacho was a lot of things. Ducker or Cherry Picker wasn't one of them

I never said he ducked anyone, i think he just fought some big names at when the were ready to be beaten.
DLH wasnt a ducker in his prime either. He fought more big names than just about anyone in history, but no one seems to have a problem with him being called a cherry picker.

The guy who started this thread said just that. I agree ODLH is no cherry picker.

I'm a Lakers fan but Kobe was cherry picking that game. His stat line was basically 61 points. And the Lakers without Kobe can beat the Knicks. But who cares. As far as DLH, he is no cherry picker. The man has a helluva resume. But he did become all business in his later years. Sad.

He all so fought a lot of big names who were good enough to beat him... that if anything shows that he picked fights that pushed him. Every fighter is going to have some easy fights at some point... Doesn't make them a cherry picker

Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
Michael Moorer -Besides Holyfield he ducked every other credible heavy
Jermaine Taylor- Middleweight reign was a joke gift decisions against Bhop
Roy Jones- Ultra talented but he cherry picked 75% of his opponents when alot of other options were in front of him ie Michalczeski/Hopkins and he took safer/dumber routes.
Gerry Cooney- Cherry picked all the way to Holmes.
Chris John- Besides Marquez he feeds off of alphabet mandatories.
Nicolay Valuev- Primo Carnerra of this generation of cherry picking heavies.
Now I have a question is it smart matchmaking or protecting the fighter that we call these cherry pickers?

Get off Jones being a cherry picker.
He fought Hopkins when they were the 2 best up and coming middles.
He fought Toney when James was P4P #2
He KO'd Malinga who beat Benn and nearly beat Eubank.
Aged 40 he fought Calzaghe who was p4p #2
He fought Glen Johnson straight after he beat Tarver.
He struggled with Tarver in their first fight yet gave him an immediate rematch!
For fucksake he is a middleweight who won a HW title!

Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
Calm down junior... I knew I might catch some flack for the Jones comment.
BHop was still an unknown at that point but who knew he would have blown upto what he is today and Toney was dehydrated for that fight. But for his talent and I did put that in there he could have bypassed the Glenn Kellys of the world and fought more stiffer competition then old Mccallums or Hills or Hardings or Halls, Woods or Harmons. And as far as Heavyweight title this is prime example of cherry picking because Lennox was the man not the smaller Ruiz. Like I said 75% cherry picking. Or like I said careful matchmaking or protecting the fighter? But he was an unbelievable talent that could have been an Ali like icon had he fought to his full potential and fought all competition that was around.

Please explain to me how RJJ is more of a cherry picker than:
Joe Calzaghe
Sven Ottke
Anthony Mundine
Dariusz Michalczewski
Zsolt Erdei
All guys of a similiar weight. All guys u didnt mention so u obviously think Roy is a bigger cherry picker than them.
RJJ cherry picked cos he didnt fight Lewis? A guy who started at 160, was fighting at 175 cherry picked cos he didnt fight an alltime great HW who weighed 245? U idiot.

Well for starters I did not mention any of those name except DM but yes he should have fought Joe Calzaghe over Telesco Sven Ottke over Eric Lucas. Oh and yes its called cherry picking when you take on a smaller heavyweight and call yourself the champ when you know your not. Next nobody heard of Glen Johnson until he fought Jones. Why did Jones fight him hmmm because of the losses he had on his record and he had a belt. Guess what he cherry picked the wrong guy because Glen was a hungry pitbull. He avoided a rematch with Toney priced himself out of the Bhop fight and the Tyson fight. And no those guys are cherry pickers but Roy is the more prolific on that list. Also my list could have been more but I knew I would be responding to 1 name on the list RJJ. Thank you Eagle I love you for your passion. Idiot? I think not just debating. So lets put another shrimp on the barbie and go for round 4.

The part-time fighter De La Hoya gotta be the no.1 cherry picker.

I cant see how Oscar is a cherry picker he has one of the best resumes in boxing even though he lost most of his big fights.
-
Re: Can you name a Cherry Picker?
Floyd Mayweather after moving to 140 biggest cherry picker going.
Sven Ottke
Now i have seen Jermaine Taylor and Ricky Hatton as cherry pickers?? are you for fucking real???
Taylor has fought Hopkins twice Winky Wright and Kelly Pavlik twice and the second time after getting ktfo!!!
Hatton?? Yes his early carrer was a bit patchy but blame good old Franky boy. Since he became champ by "cherry picking" p4p number 3 Kosta and taking a big pay cut he has fought only the best, Mayweather p4p the best and probably best of the past 20 years in the usa. Mallinaggi and Castillo both number 1 contenders to his 140 crown and now the p4p number 1, yes sure looks like Hatton has decided to stay home and fight bums for the rest of his career.
