Who was boxings greatest character?
Let me know your thoughts. For me it was max baer, he was a pure performer and party animal, he even joked while he was dying from a heart attack (he rang the hotel operater and when she asked if he wanted the house doctor he said "hell no, i need a people doctor!").

apart from the obvious choice then Eubank, Naz and PBF for me in recent times and the ones I have been witness to.
The ones you love to hate (though I was a Eubank fan in his twilight days)

Re: Who was boxings greatest character?
Jalke LaMotta is an intruiging character. His boxing style suited his personality well.

A self-confessed rapist, woman beater, thug, sosiopath, alcoholic....comedian, he was a lot of things and he was unpredictable. He was a great character and fighter, just not a great person. Still, an interesting one.

Not necessarily biting peoples ears but you gotta miss the action of boxing when Tyson was around, he was a love or hate

Re: Who was boxings greatest character?
:o Carlos Monzon--party animal and darling of the Jet Set, but killer in the ring (and outside as well).
:o Max Baer
:o Jung Koo "The Korean Hawk" Chang - An Asian version of Monzon
:o Jake LaMotta. Brute both inside and outside the ring. But still alive and chipper!!!
-
Re: Who was boxings greatest character?
never really thought about Tyson - I was kind of thinking of their characters outside the ring.
Mike's menace etc.. and persona was mostly confined to inside the ropes for me - am talking about the 80s Tyson.
In his latter years his character in and out of the ring was pretty embarassing if you ask me.
So thats probably why I never thought about him:-\

When in this day and age would you have an event like the below on tv, absolute classic!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO-js...eature=related Watch from about 3mins onward for Benn/Eubank interview.

Re: Who was boxings greatest character?
Eubank was the pinnacle of sporting arrogance throughout britain in the 1990s and hence gained one hell of a backlash for it..
Quite beautiful though towards the end how the same arrogant eubank went from being universally hated to becoming a fan favourite solely because the casual fan realised that love him or hate him he was a great fighter who had given them hours of pleasure.
Remember my dad hoisting me over his shoulders in the local pub so i could roar "EUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUBANK" with all the other locals urging him on to victory over steve collins!!
-
Re: Who was boxings greatest character?
Surely its Ali. And love him or hate him Don King is certainly a character
-
Re: Who was boxings greatest character?
Felix Trinidad, always a smile on the mans face until you fuck with him like Vargas and Mayorga did lol i remember Trinidad was all smiles until Vargas acted like he was gonna spit water in his face in the center of the ring
Antonio Tarver, was annoying but was funny as hell with some of the shit he'd say.
