BBC NEWS | Business | Setanta in talks on sport rights

Sounds like bad news. Setanta is my number 1 because of the boxing. As long as they have that then I will stay with them even if they lose the football.
Setanta is better than sky sports right now I hope they can get over the blip I think the all round coverage is brillant .
they've only got the Saturday games that start at 5 30 from now on .
Hope they stick in there if only for Bunce's boxing hour ,the cult tv show of boxing .
It may have started already sky have the Berto v Urango fight.
oh dear:(
i have setanta cos get with virgin+ but would of subscribed to them if was with sky anyway solely for the boxing
hope they keep gettin the fights
It's not a suprise really, the football coverage is shocking. And as thats what they are pushing as the reason for people to subscribe, then its no shock they are going under.
If they advertised as just a boxing channel, which is what they are best at, they would still go under because of the large majority of boxing viewers who prefer to watch on streams rather than physically pay a TV channel to show it.
They are in a lose-lose situation I'm afraid.
I prefer to watch it on TV and record it on my VHS tapes. I must be a dinosaur. ;D
I hope they don't go under. They are much better than sky.
They have some good fights in the near future. They have Haye's next 3 fight and have a deal with Top rank so they should have cotto's next fight.
I'm not sure how long this deal lasts though.
The trouble is the football side of it is shockingly bad, and thats why they are in so much shit financially. They've lost the Monday night games and so only have the Saturday evening kick-off, so there's not much point in having Setanta now for football. Their boxing coverage is excellent, but thats not enough unfortunately.
Boxing is my primary interest, football is second. Setanta is cheaper than Sky so that is another bonus. The Germain boxing is poor but the Top Rank fights are better.
June 21st is when I'm getting rid of Setanta.
Cotto fight is coming up, then Haye, there's some ABA stuff and the heavyweight fight.
After that, £15 a month is looking bad value.
setanta simply cannot compete with sky when it comes to premier league rights and im pretty sure thats a good 70-80% alone of their profiting figures.
Without at least 1 game a week they`ll struggle to even remain in existence and we`ll have to get used to shitty sky coverage and on the odd ITV card :mad::mad:
Damn Setanta arent getting much luck are they. Its not like they have THAT many fights on anyway, Valuev called off in May now the Haye fight in June. Do they even have any pro bouts lined up bar Cotto now?
ITV are pulling out of boxing too when their current contract with Hennessy ends. Setanta will do well to survive another twelve months, they're going to have to totally rewrite their business model. Pretty soon boxing will be Friday night domestic stuff on Sky and PPV for anything involving a Brit at world level.
If Setanta and ITV are out within a year then I will have to fork out for Sky which I left April 2008.
Well it seems its a matter of days before they go under now.Quote:

Sky will probablt kinda sorta buy them. They'll become another part of the Sky Sports package, like Premier Plus before Setanta bought Premier League rights. The alternative for Sky is letting ESPN move in. Those guys have serious money and could turn into a big competitior for Sky in the long run, so Sky will probably do a deal with Setanta to prevent that happening so easily.
We need competition so it would be bad for boxing if Sky monopolises boxing and our money. :)
Totally agree, I would not pay for the PPV but at least you can watch them a week later which is better than nothing.
I have the kids channels but need the sports channel for the boxing, could not care much about the football.
I've just tried to log in to my setanta-i online account in anticipation of the Cotto Clottey fight tonight and my subscription has been cancelled. Supposedly it was cancelled on the 26th May 2009. I certainly didn't request that this happened. Totally pissed about this. Anyone else had any problem with the online / broadband version of setanta???
I read yesterday that some American Tycoon is going to help out Setanta by putting in 20million and try and keep them afloat!I understand that its more than 20million,its something like 50million of dept,i could be wrong with them figures though.I dont know the name of this american but he has agreed 20 million pounds soo!!!:-\
It was on 5Live earlier that Endemol, the company who do Big Brother, were looking into investing £50m for a majority stake to keep them afloat. There seems to be too many rumours flying around for someone not to come along and take them over.
