Why can Pacman fight a bigger man than shane (oscar) at shane's weight of 147, but not fight shane at shane's weight?
First and foremost 147 is not PAC's weight... He will be at disadvantage sizewise fighting at 147...
The only reason I can think of is Shane's 2 wins over Oscar... Team PAC sees Shane as a bigger threat than Oscar... Fighting Shane at a catchweight below 147 will even the field for PAC...
.
I think it's obvious.
Mosley is comfortable at 147 which would be unfair on Pacquaio the natural 140lber.
Both fighters should meet inbetween like 144.
Pacs obviously scared of Shane.
Let it begin........
Pac has listed Mosley as one of his possible opponents for October. If Pac's scared of Mosley, then what about Mayweahter Jr??? ;D He hasn't even named Mosley as a possible opponent.
As for the thread starter's question, I think its because Shane is more dangerous than Dela Hoya at this point in their career. Pac needs a few things going his way to get an even fight with Mosley, thus the catchweight.
People will jump through hoops to fight Oscar de la Hoya. Shane, not so much.
Who else would Floyd have fought at 154 for? Daniel Santos?
On a side note, did you know DLH weghed in at 145 for the Pac fight? He couldn't been that tight at the weight if he came in 2 pounds under :-\
Spot on. It is because ODLH is a BIG money fight. Shane isn't. In addition, although fighting at 147 may be attainable for Pac, it is not optimal, but it was worth it at the time because the fight was with Oscar. And there was no way Oscar was fighting at anything below 147.
There is also the idea of evening out the playing field. Shane has a huge advantage at 147, but at 144 the playing field is more even. However, I still wouldn't bet against Shane ;).
Its not only a big money fight, its a fight that creates future big money fights in that its a star maker, it gets your name out there.
some people are letting their hate for saddoboxer get in the way of logic. Mosley called out Pac (knowing they weren't going to fight at 147), not the other way around. I guess Mosley's just picking on little guys. Meh, I don't even really believe that as there are few guys in boxing I respect more than Shane but the one sidedness of this debate is annoying.
so it's ok for Mosely to be at a disadvantage but not Pac. Yeah sounds fair.
The problem is, if he's fought at the weight before people will obviously say why not fight there again. If it was/is a problem making that weight then Pac should say so and that'll be it.
It's simple, Oscar was shot and Roach knew it or else he would have no problem with Pac fighting Shane at 147.
Quite simple really, Dela Hoya calls the shots when he is involved in the fight as you all know hes the cash cow, Mosley is not a huge money fight Pac is the main man in this fight and as people said Pac is not a 147 fighter so i dont see any problem pac getting as much as advantage as possible.
hate catchweight fights too
If the challenger wants to fight the champ then he has to meet him at his weight.
Pavlik-Hopkins should in theory have been scheduled as a huge world title showdown
instead it was just classified as a "170pound contest" something you would find in your local boxing club
Totally agree. Catch weight is bollocks for "I don't believe I can actually fight at the required weight!".
Manny should fight Bradley at 140 if he wants a fight and should wait and see where the money is. If 140 is what he wants then fair enough. Mosley at 147 is a good fight that many want though. Manny gets most of the money and another title. I don't see the issue.
But Mosley hammers Pac quite easily. I want to see it for comic value above all else.
All this "if Pac wants to fight a welter" stuff ignores the simple fact that Pac is not chasing Mosley its the other way around. Mosley said he wanted a fight and a catchweight is fine. Everybody constantly talks about why should Mosley compromise his advantage by agreeing to a catchweight, why should Pacqauio give Mosley all the advantages by going up to welter? Hell Mosley's fought well at 154 ffs, Pacqauio's never fought above 142. This is silly.
Not to mention Pacquaio's got tons of options, he doesn't really need Mosley.
Exactly Skel, people take a fight with ODLH wherever they can get it, JMM would have jumped on that fight too if he had a chance.
Ergo why there's a catchweight! People keep saying keep the fight fair and fight at 147 in Shane's weightclass. How is that fair to Pac? He's at 140. I keep saying this over and over again 144-145 is the fairest.
Look at the other side of this statement: If Mosley wants to fight a juniorwelter, he should do so at junior welter. Pac is P4P #1, so it's Mosley chasing the fight. Pacquiao is the one that has to debate who to fight cause everyone wants to fight him.
Pacquiao is P4P #1 and AND holds THE RING Championship. Mosley has an alphabet title. No Ring belt up for grabs if he fights for Shane's title.
Just continuing on a point I made earlier. Pac has to choose from Cotto (if he wins next week), Mosley, the winner of Mayweather vs Marquez, Valero, and now Katsidis who are all openly seeking a fight with Pacquiao. Mosley is just trying to choose between who he wants to chase further, Pacquiao or Mayweather.
Again, why does Manny have to keep moving up in weight to fight people? He was a junior lightweight last year!! If people want to fight him since he's on the top of the boxing world, they have to accomodate to him. His opponents don't have to agree to anything, THEY want the fight, not the other way around.
He's already fought Barrera x2, Morales x3, Marquez x2, De La Hoya, Hatton, and he's looking to fight Cotto, Mosley, Mayweather, and Marquez again. Yet people are still trying to question his and his team's mindset. Who in boxing besides Shane are looking to fight the best like that?!
Exactly. I know I'm biased towards Pacquaio but this debate has gone off the rails IMO. Totally one sided.
This here. The thing is,Manny has already agreed and proven himself quite successful meeting Oscar who weighed 147 (well,145) and carried the weight in fine order.Yeah...Mosley put his name out there, thats what greats do in hopes of meeting one another.I think its risk/reward for Pac and he knows well that Mosley can manage the 147 and will not be a stick figure needing oxygen,so they look to get the upper advantage with guidelines of a 144 range.
For me.Look.Manny is a bonafide super star and a cash cow.Clearly the shot caller of the day and looking to be in his peak stride. The man is a terrific fighter.Other Champs will clearly be looking to get in the mix with him.People talk as if Mosley should count his blessings to be a thought on Mannys mind.Like a lifer hanging on looking to cash out his chips in one last mega fight hoorah......Honestly I think that was a better description of Oscar in that fight! I think yes....of course Mosley wants the rewards absolutely, but I also think that he want to fight the very best and anyone coming into his sector of the arena.Mosley is the undeniable established Welter here and has been knocking around big 147-154 guys over the last number of years. At the very least, its in his professional mind set to do nothing to compromise his abilities by jumping through hoops and draining down.Manny is on the rise, but hes coming into Mosleys house and division. He wanted Oscar at 147.Shane can do the same.People questioned Mosley at that weight going against Margarito combined with his age and gave him little shot.Pacs skills are on another level.Manny could come in same weight as last fight and could do very well, speed, age and momentum wise.So whats the problem?side note....Mayweather must feel like a backseat driver right about now:-X
