Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
I have been thinking about this today and does he have any chance ? Not a lot of people have given him an argument at all against Cotto, but lets not forget Cotto is against a real 147 challenger again whos big at the weight too. A performance against Jennings doesnt really show a lot as he wasnt anywhere near the level of Clottey. Clottey seems like hes been in the hard work and I think he might be able to take the best of what Cotto has to offer. I think this fight will be a lot closer than some might expect, I just hope for Cottos sake he doesnt get disheartened if his A game doesnt work and from that I hope he doesnt tire down the strech and lose heart again. I know the Margarito fight has a lot of controversy wrapped around it, he might have had plaster in his gloves, but none the less that was a big knockout mentally and physically to get over for Cotto and he really doesnt need to be on his game to beat Clottey I think.
I think that loss would have done a lot for him and I can see Cotto winning a UD, I dont see him stopping Clottey though and if it goes the full distance I think this will be an interesting fight. I wouldnt be surprised if Clottey could take it either, this is a true test for Cotto IMO.

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey has every chance, he is dangerous for anyone IMO. I'm hoping we see Cotto get brutal and smash his ribs in because Cotto can be a brutal bastard when he finds a weak spot.

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
He seems like he can take a good punch though, I dont think Cotto will be able to break him down IMO. I just hope we dont see something similar in the Margarito fight that Cotto changes his game plan due to the fact he was getting tired and he felt like it wasnt working. I think this is a dangerous fight for Cotto, I hope hes worked hard on lasting the full 12 rounds because I think hes going to need it.

He has every chance. The fight should be very close. People probably haven't given him a chance because he's not beaten enough name fighters and hasn't gotten the same exposure as the other top names at Welterweight. Make no mistake though, Clottey is a very dangerous opponent and the fight could swing either way.

he has a good chin, but Judah was able to rock him, and IMO Cotto hit's loads harder than Judah

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey has a great chance, This fight is arguably a pick em fight.
Clottey has tools that he could use to beat Cotto, like his defense, pressure, crisp inside shots and his lead right hand and combine that with he is a very big welterweight with some power.
I expect Cotto to win though, I see him outworking Clottey and using his jab to keep the fight at a distance.
I don't see a stoppage happening either way.
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
You bet Clottey has a chance! Now I want Cotto to come back and be in top form but there are issues to consider
#1 What did the Margarito fight do to Cotto mentally and physically?
#2 Have the issues with Evangelista Cotto affected Miguel seriously?
I think Clottey is durable enough to cause Miguel problems, but I think if Cotto is still in top form it's his fight to lose
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Well, I'm hoping Clottey upsets the odds & batters the shit out of him, however, this is really Cotto's chance to show he's over the Margarito loss. Jennings didn't prove anything to me.

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Don't think Cotto will bully Clottey around the ring either they both come in big. With Cotto it's all mental, he is a fighter that loves to break down the will of his opponents and make them quit, yet when he doesn't do that he gets frustrated or he starts to lose his way. He won't break the spirit of Clottey so it will be nice to see how he responds to it and see if anything has changed. For Clottey this fight is there for the taking. He could beat Cotto and he may very well do it, it will be a good fight regardless.

I don't remember Zab Judah rocking Joshua Clottey, i have only seen the fight once and it was a long time ago. But still i don't recall that, but i do recall Miguel Cotto getting rocked a few times against Zab Judah, especially with the uppercut.

There was a replay of Judah stunning Clottey with a left uppercut later in the fight, Clottey did look hurt imo.

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey has a damn good chance in my opinion, most powerful guy Cotto would have faced, Margarito aside..... I'm lookin for him to take everythin that Cotto can throw at him and stop Cotto late on 10, 11, 12. Maybe ambitious but who knows....
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Im going to go with Cotto as i cant see anyone beating him except Mayweather.A tough points victory.

I disagree, Judah landed but never rocked Clottey, Margarito landed on Clottey and couldnt rock him, I doubt judah would have

I am a huge Clottey fan and fully expect him to take the piss out of Cotto bringing him to the deep dark cold waters of the fight and having Cotto relive some more of the anguish and mental pain that Margarito inflicted on him.
Clottey late TKO or UD and it wouldnt be an upset IMO.. Clottey is the real deal

I'm hopin he can do that, but in truth if Cotto has rationalized the Margarito defeat as I expect he has, then I think he boxes to a close but comfortable UD. Really hope I'm wrong though

Yeah i agree.
His Career hasn't quite been what it should, but that wont affect him against Cotto.
I just worry because it seems everyone is thinking about Cotto... Will he fight? Will he box? Will he wilt under pressure? Won't he?
I just wonder if Clottey has the aptitude to get the tactics right and have all the angles covered rather than assuming Cotto will fold, or Cotto isn't tough enough etc...
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
about as much chance as pac had beating de la hoya before hand.
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey has a great chance i wouldnt be surprissed if he won.We dont know what Margarito took out of Cotto has he got over that beat down he took late on in the fight. He has changed trainers.Clottey is a handfull for anyone when they bring there A game. If Cotto has any demons still i think Clottey will take full advantage off this and get the biggest win of his career. If the real Cotto shows up i slightly lean towards him winning a very narrow points win.
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Cotto seems to be esentially training himself for this one. If you're a fan of his, youre hoping thats not true and he has someone in his corner that could really bring some insight and that could take him to the next level. Since the discord amongst him and his trainer, things have been realtively quiet aside from the press tour and the public workouts etc.
I think Clotteys training hard for this one and has a good chance. Theres two things that I see playing possible major factors in this fight. Clottey likes to keep his hands high and thats a wet dream for a Cotto thats looking to work the body....
...The other is the Clottey uppercut that busted Judah open. (Ok Zabs skins seems about as durable as wet paper these days...) but still.. It was a uppercut on the inside --where Cotto often likes to set up camp. Cotto couldnt see the margarito uppercuts coming with a crystal ball and a ouija board. If Clotteys smart, hes worked on mixing in that uppercut a lot more often for this fight. Cotto at this point is gambling on the fact that Clotteys punch output is hindered by Clottey working out of the gaurd so much ...and that he'll be able to get Clottey into his shell by flicking the jab and then being able to work clotteys ribs uninterrupted.
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey is a big strong welter, with an iron chin and a lot of heart. He can do a Marg and win but Cotto needs to stick to boxing and see if the body shots cause damage. I cannot see Cotto stopping Clottey but outpointing him yes.
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey has a real good chance. In my eyes this is almost a pick 'em fight. I see Cotto winning this fight, but not easily though. It'll be close I think 116-112 somewhere in there.

I like Clottey quite a bit and I feel he is/was one of the most avoided fighters in boxing, but Manny Pacquiao he is not.

Thats where I'm at.Think Clottey must force fight. In active rounds....Cotto is still fresh off Tony drubbing.Jennings was more about mental establishing than anything else.

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
I think Clottey has a decent chance.
Cotto will do well to stop him.
I highly doubt Clottey will get it on the cards, but maybe if Cotto gets taken into a hard one the Margarito fight will show it's damage.

Just because Margarito couldn't hurt Clottey doesn't mean Judah couldn't.
Margarito is bigger and stronger but Judah is way faster and has better timing. A well placed fast shot from Judah which Clottey doesn't see i feel could hurt more than a slow margarito uppercut.

Unless Cotto is damaged goods, Clottey is not stopping him.
he couldn't stop a shot overweight Chico, He ain't stopping Cotto.
Clottey has a great chance to win with his defense, pressure, short inside shots and lead right hand.
I expect this fight to go the distance with Cotto winning a competitive but clear decision.
-
Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Ofcourse Clottey has a chance. He's bigger and more athletic than Cotto imo. They're even skill wise. But Cotto is the better puncher. I dont think we will see a KO. Cotto should win a close UD. I see Clottey kissing the canvas once in late rounds but will reach the finish line behind.

JT have you ever seen Joshua Clottey vs Richard Gutierrez ? because if i was a big Joshua Clottey fan like you, i'd be worried about that fight. Because he was pretty easy to hit too the body, and he only just about won a decision. Sorry but Joshua Clottey is too hot and cold with a suspect mentality to be picked over Miguel Cotto IMO.

you forget that Cotto was smashed to pieces and beaten into submission in one of the brutalist title fights in this era. Beating feather fisted Michael Jennings proved nothing! Cotto is in with a big guy and underrated boxer who is capable of putting a hurtin on him. My money is with Clottey

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Having a good defense, a good chin, the faster hands, the size and reach advantages could be enough for Clottey to defeat Cotto...
I'm afraid that several flush shots landing and hurting Cotto will bring back memories of the bad beating he got from Margacheato... Cotto might take a knee again, this time infront of Clottey...
.

Even though i do think Antonio Margarito cheated in the Miguel Cotto fight, you are right that we don't know how Miguel Cotto will cope under the pressure.
Because he will be revisiting that place again, although not as bad as the Antonio Margarito fight.
And like you said beating Michael Jennings doesn't prove how much Miguel Cotto has left mentally.
But my issue is that Joshua Clottey has also folded under pressure so how do we know Joshua Clottey, will also be able to keep his head screwed on for 12 rounds ?

The circumstances that you suggest about Clottey have been years ago and he has had himself a good career up to this point. I dont see any questions marks with him, especially seeing he fought the same Margarito that used hand wraps and held his own despite injuries. He never folded like Cotto did. Clottey's style dosent lend for him to sustain large quantities of damage

I will give you this Xadu, Clottey did have the faster hands. Cotto had the better footwork, and Clottey's uppercut did play a primary role in the fight. Well called.

Re: Does Clottey have any chance of a win against Cotto ?
Clottey definitely had the faster hands. The blood was there to smell but he didn't go for the kill. To bad for him. He'll learn from this lost though. I hope he gets a rematch.

This is wildly off topic, but you don't take your name from NHL enforcer Wade Belak by any chance do you? I've wondered that ever since I noticed your name.
