Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
He may be the best heavyweight in the world in terms of wins and on paper, but he only has two punches. A good jab, and a great right hand. His hook that he throws from time to time, is one of the worst ive ever seen from a champion. Its a wide slap that he puts nothing behind and doesnt turn into. He doesnt throw uppercuts either. Also, I think is worth mentioning that he threw not one punch to the body. Not one. Look, he should stay on the outside and keep him at the end of his punches, but when you are leading so much in a fight and you have hurt the guy over and over and have the power to stop him, you have to throw more than one two, one two. I just dont think he has anything else. Yes he wins fights, yes he is physically gifter, but he is not as complete a fighter as many make him out to be.

he has a good left hook that he loops off of the jab as well, plus he has a decent uppercut, he's no one trick pony
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
You don't need to use more than two punches if your opponent is landing zero punches.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
He only uses 2. But he has more.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Wladimir Klitschko has got a decent left hook off the jab, i remember he wobbled Samuel Peter badly with that punch.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
I just see a guy who has the physical ability and uses just enough to win with taking no chances at all. Manny Steward is right, he may end up in the hall, but the only think that is impressive to me is his jab, when he throws it as a punch and not a paw, and his right hand.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Ive seen his hook off the jab, it is all arm. It is the jab that does the damage. No question, he is great at throwing stiff staight punches. Thats all i see thought. I also get the impression that if he fought another good big man that goes after him, he would be in trouble because he needs space to work. His hands are low a lot too, these short guys just cant get over his jab.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Maybe, but damn them 2 are effective!

Agreed Wlad is no one trick pony though he favors the 12 he has good hooks and over hands

Your right he doesnt need to. But thats what separates good fighters from great fighters. Mike Tyson didnt need to knock almost all his opponents out either, he could have pummeled them to a decision, but that would hurt his status as a fighter imo. Wlad can keep doing what hes doing and get in the HOF but its in a less than immpressive way imo. Thats why I couldnt rate him up there with the ATGs.

Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Wladimir Klitschko is just too scared of being knocked out, im not saying its the wrong thing to do. Protecting his weak chin behind the long jab, but come on it is a bit ridiculous.
Why in the world you have to fight scared against Hasim Rahman ? a shot one at that. A real Heavyweight champion would of finished Hasim Rahman inside of 4 rounds.
Im sorry but as BoomBoom said he may have the best wins on paper, at the moment in the Heavyweight division. But he is a total bore who has no killer instinct.
People hated on Larry Holmes for just using his jab, but Larry Holmes would take risks and he would use the jab. Not just to keep his opponents at bay, he would use it as a weapon and he wasn't afraid to mix it up. He also had the heart of champion, and he was in some of the most exciting fights in Heavyweight history.
If this is the way Wladimir Klitschko will keep fighting in the future, i would rather he retire. I didn't even bother watching his fight with Ruslan Chagev, because i knew it would be a bore. And by the comments i've seen it looks like i was right.
When i watched the Heavyweights in the late 90's early 00's. There was i time i would rush to go see the best Heavyweights fighting, now i really couldn't careless. And i think it goes to show how poor the division is, when i didn't even care about the supposedly best Heavyweight fighting.

Im not saying otherwise. Look, I like Wlad. I think hes a classy guy and an genuinely good dude. Im just saying what I observe from him in the ring. Im not arguing that hes not the number one heavy in the world, I just think he limits himself a lot.

They are either too small or too lazy. Hes just so big and strong that everything usually goes out the window when he lands the first right hand. He also knows his range very well, I give him credit for that and his timing.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Wlad KO'd Ray Austin in two and didnt even throw a right hand. Wlad has a better arsenal than most lower weight class fighters. Wlad hooks off the jab better than any fighter I have ever watched. He didnt even use that vs Ruslan. Is the Ruslan fight the only one of Wlad's you have watched?

So you must not be a Floyd Mayweather, Bernard Hopkins, or Roy Jones fan either....Cause all three of those guys are careful defense oriented and do not like to take chances.......At least Wlad KO's most of his opponents....

Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Wlad throws variety of punches. I think what the thread starter talking about are his 2 money punches aka signature punches.

Uhh please do not compare Wladimir Klitschko to those fighters, Roy Jones Jr was excellent to watch in his prime, he could rattle off 5 punch combinations in a blink of an eye, he also had spectacular KO's, and watching him avoid punches just by using his reflexes was masterful to watch.
Floyd Mayweather Jr may not be as exciting at the higher weightclasses, but thats because he's no longer the bigger man. Unlike Wladimir Klitschko has always been in all his fights, but he is still way more exciting to watch, and he has had some great exciting boxing masterclasses, and he's been in some dramatic exciting fights.
Bernard Hopkins hasn't been as fan friendly in the last few years or so, but when he is exciting which he has been quite alot of times. Especially in his younger career when he was a come-forward fighter. He is a pleasure to watch.

You cant compare Wlad to those 3. He is a heavyweight and usually has a big physical advantage over his opponents because there is no max. size a heavyweight needs to be. Those other guys fought within a limit. Plus all those guy would put blazing combination together and mix it up with their opponents.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
No disrespect but from, what ive seen of him he isn't that good. He just has physical and height advantages over everyone else in the division. He's sort of like the LeBron James of boxing. He looks good only because he has no one else to challenge him in his position. As Lebron has maybe only one or two people at Small Forward that are good defenders to challenge him in the NBA so he is very dominant. Wladimer has no one that can match his height or physical talents in the heavyweight division so he looks dominant. Its probably why he isn't gonna lose anytime soon but he is the best heavyweight in the division not because he's ultra super skilled but because he is a big fish in a small pond.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
If with only 2 good punches he mangles the whole division repeatedly, I really don't want to see what he could do if he decides to do more. Boring? Well, he's a Kronk Gym's type of fighter. Effective? Nothing better in the division, at the moment (except perhaps his brother).
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Majesty, i think you got it exactly right. His huge physical advantages gives him a big edge over almost anyone. The skills of his opponents usually only dictates how many round the will last with him, but even a much more skilled fighter than himself would still be overwhelmed by his size/power.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
I dont think its a case of heart or desire as much as his previous defeats being in the back of his mind.Tea spilled over shit.He has honed up his defense behind an often floatie buffer zone jab in a big way to keep his chin insured.I think that eventually someone will drag him into a fire fight and he'll have to press forward to make it through....show the mentality of a finisher when its not on his terms. He needs to bring that righthand more.....its a wrecking ball.He may be smart to steer away from throwing too many uppercuts.Leaves him all heeeeello and bent over.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
I do wish Wlad would throw one of those steel-hammer righthand shots into someones guts now and again.
The good Doctor will loose sooner or later and it will be a case of a big punch sneaking around that telephone pole he shoves up a fighters nose.
It gets old after awhile, Dr. Klitschko. You are becoming the Lance Armstrong of heavyweight boxing. Soon the big speculation will be which man is the second best. Oh, that would be your carbon copy brother...
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Klitschko is a perfect 101 Boxer. If you have an athletic fighter who is taller than his opponents pop in a video of Wlad and say this is exactly how you out box your opponent by throwing the one two. He is perfect, but in terms of excitiment he is very boring which does hurt how you compare him with the all-time greats. Why is Mike Tyson so popular and why is he in the top 10 Heavyweight boxers of all-time is because he is exciting.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
I consider him to be a two-punch fighter as well. I seldomly see him throw any uppercuts and his left hook is something he is thinking about in order to throw instead of it coming out naturally.
Maybe one of these days he can fight someone that can bob and weave. But unfortunately, with the shape of most of the heavyweights, they would tire out in 2 rounds of head movement.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
WTF?!?! Wlad's left hook is devistating!!!! He hooks off the jab better than anyone I have ever seen.
The only reason he seemed to use just the 1-2 vs Chagaev is because Ruslan is a southpaw and that would open Wlad up to counters.
Witht he left hook and the left hook ALONE Wlad has: knocked down Ray Mercer and KO'd any number of opponents, the most impressive being Ray Austin as the shear SOUND of the punch tells you all you need to know about how effective it is, when I hear it, it reminds me of Hearns-Duran:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hO_sWnawpU4
1 big left hook and 4-5 to follow up...no killer instinct my ass

i agree that can't really compare Wlad to the 3 mentioned, but him being a HW has nothing to do to it, yea he has a big size advantage, but that's still against guys that can crack anyone with a single shot, so i have no prob with cautious heavies, only thing i can't stand is if they don't engage period, like Ruiz, Wlad still gets the knockouts, can't expect him to go to war every time out, and still have the level of success he's had, and last very long either, he's a good champion
i remember an article i read and it pretty much sums it up pretty well, fighters like Wlad probably wont be appreciated until he's long gone, he takes on the best possible opponants out there, is willing to take on anyone, and 9 times out 10 he knocks them out, give the guy a break

He knocked out Ray Austin with a left hook. He barely threw the right in that fight. The frustrating thing about watching Wlad is that he has a much larger arsenal than he chooses to use in a given fight. If he's tagging a guy with 1-2's and not getting hit, he'll just keep it up until a right lands perfect or he wins a UD. He doesn't get creative and take any chances to try to finish. He should have gotten Chagaev out there about round 5 if had any kind of killer instinct.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Well in all due respect, nobody knew how Ruslan would respond when hurt...he could react as most fighters do and tie up or get on the bike, but he COULD have responded like a Miguel Cotto and just went off and Wladimir is smart enough to realize that and there is very significant danger in jumping on a hurt fighter when they aren't ready to go....look how Lamon Brewster responded after Wlad threw everything at him.
Wladimir is a smart fighter and he keeps getting KO's so it doesn't really matter how he goes about getting them does it? He gets the KO, he dominates the fight, and he avoids major risk....he's very smart and because of that he's going to be very hard to beat.
I feel bad for whoever fights him next, he seems very pissed off at David Haye and I think he's going to take it out on whoever is infront of him be it Povetkin, Arreola, Haye or Valuev.

It's difficult to compare. I can appreciate the attitude of why make a fight any harder than it needs to be? - so he uses the jab, footwork and the occasional right hand.
He has imposed his game plan, his will on the opponent. It's up them to make him change.
It is a skill to be that controlling, more considered that charging across the ring looking to knock someones head of like Tyson:cool:
Anyone else notice how often Wlad stood on his foot whilst delivering punches? It's the reason Chagaev got knocked down. ;)
That's a skill - you know you're doing it.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Wlad brings out a fuller range of punches when necessary. He adapts to his opponnent and uses what works. He's the best.
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Wlad has a lot of tools and he brings them all but he uses the one that he feels fits the job.

He brings the jab and the odd right hand.It does get the job done though. There must be a heavyweight out there that will make him fight, slip the jab and throw combinations that would give Wlad fits.Haye has the speed but not sure if he will be able to get past the jab.

And its not all that exciting to watch. :p

Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
Just got back from Dusseldorf myself after flying out for the fight. Although I ended up geting wasted in an Irish Bar and never actually bothered going to the fight, so watched it in the bar. (Met Hatton in said bar day after the fight too, got my pic with him. Ricky Fatton is back belive me! :o)
The sentiment in here pretty much reflects how I feel about Wlad. Considering the sheer size of the man I just couldn't believe how scared he was to impose himself. Even after he knocked Ruslan down he went straight back to his cautious one two one two. He was repetitive and a bore to watch. Both myself and all the other brits in the pub who hadn't bothered to go to the fight agreed that it was a good decision to give the fight a miss.
I was hugely skeptical of Haye having a chance against Wlad but now I'm more convinced he can beat him. Haye has the athleticism and movement to get underneath that jab and the power to put Wlad down.

It seems so weird to me when Vlad fights these shorter guys. The best analogy I have to compare him to a snake charmer. Once he starts popping them in the face with that hard jab, after backing off a couple of times, they start to fall into a pattern of just standing there right in the range of it and his right! Byrd, Ibragimov, Chagaev, and I can't remember if Rahman at least tried moved to around and give angles.
The taller guys it makes more sense that they have to go after him more or less on the same terms, but time and again I expect these smaller guys to dip in, get inside, turn Vlad, and use angles. Instead they just stand right at the end of his punches and get hammered!
-
Re: Wlad Only Has Two Punches...
We can debate wether WLAD has only 2 punches..but for me the bigger picture is his workrate in fights.
He does'nt bring the fight to his opponents who struggle with his power quickly enough..He has'nt the killer instinct to press fighters who are hurting with the jab and the straight right we are discussing.
You only need to look at Chagaev...he was struggling from the 1st round with the strength of the shots landing, but he never applied any sustained power to take him out of there early.
There are so many debates about fighters taking on opponents in their prime from various era's and for me Wlad does himself no favours in winning over the doubters who think he has'nt the ability to beat any of the real HW Greats! He's lethargic and slow and does'nt inspire and is limited in ability,he's the best out there at the moment but against a HW that has good lateral movement, boxing skills and power he's fucked!!
STEP IN DAVID HAYE:cool:

#1 He doesn't go to the body because he's 6'6 and he was fighting a guy who is 6'1, also if he is able to land AT WILL to the head then why bother?
#2 What boxer dead or alive wouldn't love to be able to dominate an opponent in such a simple fashion??? Wlad barely got touched and this is BOXING we're talking about "hit and don't get hit" so why all the hate?
Just because a guy is big doesn't mean he has to be a wild beast when he steps into the ring, infact, history tells us that the bigger they are usually the more cautious, the more controlling, and the more skilled you are then you'll have the better career than a big slugger who just throws punches all willy nilly....look at Michael Grant, Primo Carnera, and hell even a good big slugger like Gerry Cooney...if those guys could have boxed better then don't you think they would have had better careers??? Yes Wladimir IS an all-around fighter, he can knock you out with 1 punch and he can dominate you all fight long with his boxing skill and athletic ability....what more do you want other than that you want Wladimir to fight flaws first....run head on into danger and then see what happens and #1 That's the dumbest shit ever and #2 In doing that he's giving up all his best attributes and advantages and #3 That's not boxing.
Would you ask anyone else to give up their best attributes in a fight?? Would you tell Cotto to fight like Willie Pep? Would you tell Ali to load up on his punches and throw one punch at a time while walking down his opponent??? No! so why ask Wladimir to do something NOBODY with his skill sets would ever fucking do?????
Also I can tell you David Haye has NO chance, I would say he has a puncher's chance but I doubt he even has that...it's going to be hard for David to even get a shot at Wladimir now....he's talked too much and come through with too little and Haye will get beaten by an average to club level heavyweight before then anyway
