Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
Arum's been quoted as saying he's going to attempt to work towards this fight over the next year or so. Wants to build it into a PPV type fight.
Assuming Lopez beats Lonthchi this Saturday Arum's apparently looking to headline a card with Lopez and Gamboa against unnamed opponents. He's already requested Madison Square Garden for this card on September 26.
This is gold IMO. Gamboa worries me a bit as a fan of Lopez but he will land with that right hook and its a P4P punch.
Any thoughts on this? Its obviously speculation but even if it happened a year or two from now is that too soon? And who wins?

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
My thoughts are that Arum shouldn't try to rob us by putting this match on PPV it deserves to headline a Boxing After Dark or Showtime Boxing card not a PPV one. All PPV is gonna do is lose them money. Both of them aren't huge enough to give a PPV to. But it is a match I'd love to see

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
What people don't get about PPV's is that the reason Lopez-Lontchi is PPV is almost certainly because of HBO, not Bob Arum. HBO does not have much of a budget for boxing at all this summer and when a fight like this goes to PPV its usually because HBO passed on putting it on a free broadcast.
I don't have any links or facts but I would pretty much guarantee that's the case.
-
Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
Of course Pacquaio-Mayweather goes to PPV because of how big a fight it is, but PPV's of this level are usually because they can't put it on free tv.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
There are still many steps that need to be taken (particularly by Gamboa).
At this point I would pick JML to pick apart Gamboa all night. I want to see Gamboa move up the ranks a little more before this fight happens.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
All for young talents meeting up but this all seems a bit of a rush to me.For both guys.Might just end up canceling one another out but I think they are dead set on Gamboa producing a yes or no vote in regards to his overall career.
Might be premature but I honestly think he will fizzle out fast.A rushed product.Just cannot get passed that.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I'd pay for 25.00, but not for 49.99 one. Gamboa has no chin. Juanma by early round KO.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I guess we will see, I think people are way underestimating Gamboa here, sure JML should be favored, but Gamboa is way faster, has power of his own, and if he fights on the outside I don't see JML landing very effectively on him, he's just too much faster. By that I don't just mean physical speed, his timing is faster to.

Far lesser skilled fighters have successfully timed Gamboa, to the tune of many knockdowns.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I think JuanMa will fight Izzy and Marquez first, Gamboa has a lot of ground to make up just to get to where JuanMa is now. Maybe in a yera or two on a Latin Fury PPV.

I agree Sheep.. When Juanma lands on Gamboas chin its going to be lights out, already stated that Gamboa has been timed and dropped by lesser men.
I like Spicoli think this fight should be way down the road. Gamboa has alot of the goods, but is unproven against elite competion. I'd like him to take on some fringe guys like a Juarez, Solis or Cruz and see how he deals with some live vets.
If Lopez blows him out it could be fracturing to Gamboa

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
really hope this doesn't happen soon, these are probably my 2 favorite fighters at the moment and it will be a mega fight down the road, but they both need to get more titles and fights in, then it will be a huge event!
not sure if I agree Juanma wins easily, hopefully it will be a great fight and we could get a triology out of it!

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I'm going with Gamboa. At least I know what happens when he goes down. He gets back up. I have yet to see Lopez face any type of adversity. I don't know how he would react. I don't even know if he can take a punch.
And I'll buy it as a PPV fight

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
Thought about this idea myself a month ago but I concluded that Gamboa is not as polished as JuanMa at this point. However, as good as Lopez looks, apart from Ponce De Leon, he has yet to face a top quality Super-Bantam. Next for JuanMa has to be Marquez or Caballero although I'd heard Gamboa and Caballero might be on a collision course. In the meantimemI'd like to see Gamboa step it up against a top Feather who is established such a Larios or maybe a shot at the IBF Champion Cristobel Cruz and then push for the Juarez-John winner before taking the big fight with JuanMa.

He did break a lot of records with the amount of punches he landed against Penalosa, who is a seasoned and well-schooled.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
People are crazy in reducing the fight to a JuanMa blowout. I've been a huge fan for years but Gamboa is dangerous for anyone just because of his sheer speed and athleticism. Also if Arum can build up both of these guys that would be awesome to see PR vs Cuba in MSG. I would pick Lopez now but it would be dangerous for him and Gamboa certainly wouldn't be intimidated.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
What Amat said.
In focusing on all of Gamboa's faults I think its easy to forget about how off the charts talented he is.

I wouldn't want to see this fight yet, why can't they wait until a few years ? anyway Yuriorkis Gamboa is very talented but his defense is pretty bad, and he's been knocked down by mediocre opponents.
If he gets knocked down by Juan Manuel Lopez, its lights out. Juan Manuel Lopez is a good boxer with great power, lovely punch technique. And a fantastic workrate, and he's beaten much higher quality opponents, i see Juan Manuel Lopez winning inside of 3 rounds.
Yuriorkis Gamboa for all his talent is far too easy to catch at times, as i said before he needs to fight more technical. Hence why i don't want to see his fight yet, Yuriorkis Gamboa is far too wild to deal with someone like Juan Manuel Lopez at this point.

True that about Lopez.Hes just hitting a wide known stride himself.I think that Gamboa needs to step back...get some off TV time and fine tune his game.I think they are moving him at a hurried pace and bypassing focus on defense and patients.Frankly I think hes a bit spoiled.I though at first they were going after Cruz for coronation belt.Maybe I'm loco but right now I think Cruz can weather him early and beat Gamboa.
Not sure about Larios on different levels.Giving his medical situation I dont see Larios in the States and getting a fight like that. He's depths above Gamboa in experience....tough as nails battler but as of late he gets hit 'ugly' with effect.Dont want to see him facing anyone with big power....could end in a bad way and a steady diet of milk shakes?

Gamboa has the speed to catch Lopez. And he will. I want to see what happens

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
This fight would be awesome, but if it happens soon it may ruin a much better bout between the two down the road.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
this would be fantastic
lopez would fuck gamboa up

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I would like to see Lopez fight Vazquez and Caballero, in that order, before he moves up to 126. I believe Lopez is going to be a great champion for a long time and I believe he should beat Gamboa. However, Lopez needs more signature fights under his belt (as well as Gamboa) so that momentum can be built for a fight between Lopez and Gamboa. I know that Lopez wants those fights, but it seems those fights are not being made. I expected one of those fights to be made after Lopez defeated Penalosa, but now he's fighting this Lontchi dude, who seems like a decent fighter, but not a well-known one. Basically, a fight against Gamboa is one I would like to see, but I want to see the others first.

It's definitely not a PPV fight. Quality, maybe, but unless you're a real boxing fan, you won't be buying this fight.

I'm with Sheep and JT. Gamboa is a little cocky in the ring and he leaves himself open. Do that with Lopez and it's game over. Yes, Gamboa has been knocked down and come back to win. But will Lopez let him come back? If he drops Gamboa he's not letting up.
I personally don't like Gamboa and hope he gets rocked but I do think he's freakishly fast and has good power too.
Let the two develop more, then match them up. I think in a couple of years this will have much more significance.

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
Juan ma would beat his ass back to cuba

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I think JuanMa's the real deal, and I also think last night's "longer-than-expected" fight against Lontchi can only help his maturity and learning process. Lotchi was one awkward MOFO to fight... he kept lunging with his head down, and bear-hugging Lopez every chance he got. Plus, he was veteran enough to throw some meaningful punches in there once in awhile. I think Lopez will finish cleaning up 122, before moving up to 126 where some of the bigger names are fleeing to.
;D

Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
At 27 and over 300 amateur fights I don't think Gamboa is that green as most people think. This fight will only add color to their respective careers almost like Tua-Ibeabuchi except ofcourse I'm pretty sure Gamboa and Lopez will have a Great lasting career.

Gamboa vs JuanMa
Looks like Arum is building up to this fight. How do you think it would play out at this stage? I am leaning toward Juanma, seems to have a tighter defense and a little more control.
-
Re: Gamboa vs JuanMa
id have to go for jaunma. gamboas got the skills and all that, juanma just looks too strong and solid for him, i couldnt believe his punch output against penalosa
-
Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
I think even at this point that Juan Ma is a total package, Gamboa's speed and power could turn the tables pretty quick. Toss up PPV worthy IMO!!!
-
Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
Gamboa WINS where weight <= 135, next opponent please?
-
Re: Arum looking to build towards JuanMa Lopez-Yuriorkis Gamboa?
Going from these espn chumps they've been tossing in front of gamboa to look good to fighting juanma is crazy imo. Juanma beats this kid very very easy. Gerry p who juan ma whooped would beat gamboa as well. You'll definatly see gamboa's faults exposed big time if this fight happens.
