Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
http://www.saddoboxing.com/boxing_im...-Bernstein.jpgI can count on one hand the times in my 30 year career that I have expressed disagreement with any of my broadcasting colleagues in a public forum.
Mind you, I have often disagreed, but seldom if ever have I spoken out. My style as a communicator is not built on argument or confrontation and I don’t really understand “media feuds.” And, I am certainly not trying to ignite one here.
All that having been said, I feel called upon to strongly disagree with some of the opinions expressed by ESPN commentator Teddy Atlas in a recent interview I read on the internet.
I’ll further qualify this (how much qualifying can one man do?) by saying that Teddy and I have never had any issue with each other on a personal basis, and we have many mutual friends.
So, this column is really a reaction to his comments and there is nothing else behind it.
In this recent interview, Teddy makes some all inclusive comments about the internet that I think are very unfair and ina... Full Boxing Article here...

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Teddy knows boxing. Teddy don't know scoring. or much else. :p

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Bernstein is the muthafukkin man. He knows what's up. I have yet to really disagree with any of his view points. He has an outstanding Boxing mind

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
The internet, in about 95 percent cases, connects me to boxing. Thats my avenue, and i'm damn sure i'm not alone. If it wasn't for the omnipresence of boxing on the internet, it would certainly have one less fan, and probably countless others. I think they should give Teddy Atlas a job somewhere else hidden away where he can take his uber metaphoric ass and tell someone who gives a shit.........
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Teddy is an idiot, and needs to get with the times.
If it wasn't for the internet, I wouldn't know most of what is going on in boxing. The network he works for, sure as $hit doesn't give it enough coverage.
I can honestly say that I have learned a lot from some writers, and even from some members here. How is that a bad thing.

"Boxings future DEPENDS on the internet"
100% agree and if it was not for Saddo's I'd still be sat in the pub talking to people who know fuck all about boxing.
Teddy is scared of technology or someshit, either that or he ain't took the time to find the 'real' boxing related sites.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
No other medium can provide global interaction like the internet. It's really a no brainer. Cheers to you Al, it's good to have you on board. Atlas doesn't bother me as much he does a lot of people, he's a known quantity he's gonna repeat over and over what he thinks is important for a fighter to win a fight.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
speak your mind al bernstein. how are you doing? it's good to hear from you again.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Without the internet I would be lost on what's happening. I rely on this site in particular for my news and access to watching sites thanks to the people on here who are able to share fights.
With the stripping away of terestrial television covered fights, you are only able to see the bigger fights if you have access to cable tv,satellite etc and even then you have to pay additional costs.
Look at your local newspaper , how much boxing news is in there. Where do you look, the internet.
To knock the most modern and technological advancement since television is just ignorant. Even my 87 year old grandmother has internet access.
To tar us all with the same brush and say that we need to get a life and we are not knowledgable is again ignorant.
It's a standing joke in my house about me having my cyber buddies since I joined here short time ago, but without this place i would be as Kel said reduced to talking to peole who last watched Tyson in his prime and think they are boxing fans.
Get a PC Teddy and have a quick lesson on how to surf the net, you'll find that there's a whole new world waiting, and someone might even talk to you;D
maybe we should invite Teddy to the board for a day and show him we can ask intelligent questions based on some pretty good knowledge of the sport.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
To be fair if Teddy did get online and saw what people post about him, it probably wouldn't be pleasant and would definately take it out on Saul in the "fight plan"

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Well after reading about it I can see were Teddy is coming from. How would you like it if you have trained champions and someone from god knows where on the internet and half your age tells you how to train fighter's. Teddy is old school he really doesn't know much about the internet he is used to that close group circle of sportswriter's that came to him before and after his fight's and asked him and his fighter's questions. Just imagine talking with say Howard Cossell, Gil Clancy, Don Dunphy, Larry Merchant and then BAM you have fucking Max Kellerman critiquqing your training abilities and fighter's accomplishments. Someone who really just gets into the game by naming names like Slapsie Maxie Roosenbloom etc without ever really studying the fight films and studying fighter's.
Another reason I can understand Teddy's frustration is simply the reason of the lifestyle he has had to live and then having some yuppie punk driving around a Beamer from their mommy and daddy's money telling him what is wrong with the sport of boxing and never been in an actual boxing match or street fight in their life. These people have no idea what it's like to come up from poverty through the ranking's and just for these asshole web writer's to call them a bum when they lose a big fight when they themselves would never dare to lace em' up and get in the ring.
Maybe I am getting off track a bit here but I notice alot of boxing bloggers , web writer's and so on to just put fighter's down without ever really getting a feel of going to one of these fight's and sitting there in press row asking the fighter's questions about the upcoming bout or post fight interviews. They can all simply write what they want, whenever they want and put down whoever without ever meeting face to face with any of the fighter's or trainer's on their websites.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Great, great read and over due topic. Can relate much to both points of view and like many on here have lived with zero internet while following the sport honestly up until roughly 2006 consistently :-X.Hey,some are brought into the new world kicking and scratching but once they are there? No going back...unless your laptop takes a flight off the balcony ha.And some just dont have the bank or availability.Trust me enjoy what we have.It used to be all notebooks, pen and pad and being a week behind.Bottom line is that we are in a new world and boxing has gone global like never before. You can change with the times or you can collect dust!It is an entirely different world as a fan & could go on for days with this. Its not only boxing. How many bloggers,'I' reporters cramp the styles of old school print journalist or TV anchorman.Being in the instant is now,Its passing you by and you can-must climb aboard or fall far,far behind.Crazy timing, was thinking up a blog last night 'peaking in the 90's...pre and post internet' but timed me out and deleted everything!
The ability of the fans to become hands on and at the forefront of expressions, contributions is priceless to the sport as a whole.I'd venture to say that the vast majority of site writers on the Boxing sites are first and foremost well versed fans, not some fly by night half hearted beat writer trying to make a deadline and then move on,a few couldn't tell you the difference between a Featherweight and the paperweight on their desk. The internet is here to stay and in 10 years or less what we know today will be 'ol school. Its a constant.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Lots of people in the boxing business, like Teddy, (Where's TM gone?) don't seem to get that the majority of fans don't understand anything about the actual business.
Regulars on internet sites are pure Boxing nerds. True fans. They want to see the best fight the best. They want to see good sportsmanship. They want the fighters to be heroes.
So obviously you get lots of overly critical, colourful, naive opinions. It's all about the love of boxing.

Yea totally agree mate. I've been into boxing since i was a young boy, and throughout most of that time have had nobody to discuss it with as my friends are either into football or no sports at all. I tried for years to convert them to this amazing sport but with only limited success. They would take an interest for the big fights, but little else. Couldn't blame them really, i mean they had no real way to access it. I'd tell them about a great fighter or a great fight, they might say 'oh wow, that sounds good', but i had nothing to back it up for, save for my blurry collection of VHS. Now, within seconds, i can be showing them Castillo-Corrales or Ward-Gatti. I defy anybody who watches something like that and not become a fan. Now almost all my friends have some level of interest, and one is now a big fan. I can't describe the joy of having my friend call me up to discuss things such as whether Kevin Mitchell can win a title, or that Khan has joined Roach, or calling up frantic when Mayweather - Marquez was postponed. For somebody who either had to watch boxing on his own or with half-interested friends this is a real joy. The internet takes the sport we love to new people, and allows people to stay in touch with the latest happenings. It keeps the knowledgable fan in the know, and with an endless supply of fights, new and old, and is the most powerful way of generating new fans.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
I gotta agree with FightFan. I love Tedy, but he's still stuck in the 1980s. Boxing's future viability depends on the internet. I think Tedy should have seperated the boxing news element from the keyboard warrior mentality of some of the analysts/board posters.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
It's weird. I reckon everyone on here has at times read 'reports' from some backyardwannabehicksville writer.com and groaned when someone here has posted a link to it and tried to legitimise their ramble for/against fighter A. Now I'm not being down on anyone who wants to embark on a writing career but they are 10 a penny and I can imagine the frustration of those in the trade inundated with interview requests.
Perhaps Teddy should take a look at the boxing forums and experience the good, the bad and the downright ugly and then take a look at the regular press.
The internet because of it's immediacy has broken any number of stories before it every hits mainstream. In fact very little boxing EVER makes the TV news and only occasionally in the papers and when they do it tends to to be one or two boxers. No coverage of the lesser known fighters plying their trade week in week out. The internet allows this. It encourages (mostly) honest debate precisely because we don't have to worry about pissing off a boxer/trainer/manager/promoter/network/and being refused access to them.

There is a difference in when I call Haye a pussy. He has to actually fight before I stop calling him a pussy or a coward.
I will also add I have never driven a Beamer I work 40 hrs week have my own house (not from mommy and daddy) I've actually sparred with Tim Witherpoon an ex heavyweight champion and last week with Chazz Witherspoon for his fight last Saturday in which he won by TKO in 2. I have also fought in the ring a couple of fight's. I am not saying I am entitled to talk shit about Haye but when a man can do nothing but sling shit and call the heavyweight division a joke and fight absolutely nobody. You have to be able to look at him and say What have you done besides bow out of a heavyweight championship fight twice and lie to your fans by bitching about a back injury.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Teddy's just mad that he can never break the top 30 in our prediction contest. :box3:
I found Atlas and his wry comments pretty funny. "Bloody Nose Boxing" is my second favorite site. ;D
I think Bernstein is a good man for sticking up for us. Still, I have often made a mooncalf out of myself on this forum.

Maybe he does need to get with the times a little but i think the point he is making is that an article like this...
Put your money on Juan Manuel Marquez
Is complete garbage and that it does not represent the a true, popular or well thought fact or opinion.
Its just words without restriction.
I can see why someone like Teddy would hate such a thing. It is all we have but at the same time it sucks a little bit. Right?

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Internet for boxing is a must. Boxing's not even my favorite sport but its the one I use the internet for the most by far, I don't post on forums for other sports much if ever because I know tons of people that follow them, I can just talk to them about it, I don't have anybody to talk to about boxing, to say that some of my friends are casual fans is really a stretch, they know who Roy Jones is, ODLH, etc. I would never bother to try to talk them into seeing say Bernard Hopkins, zzzz.
Plus I come from a boxing wasteland, its not like if you were born in California or even England. Vegas is a long way away. So is Atlantic City, New York, etc.
That's not to say we don't have some baffling people on this board or the boxing internets at large.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Does being the hometown and base of operations for Deontay Wilder make my area not a boxing wasteland? Probably not. But its better than before when our claim to fame was a guy who got blitzed by Audley in 1.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
It's cool when you get an area boxer who everyone kind of knows. Most sports fans in the Bay Area know Andre Ward imo. The sampling there is the people who come to the Applebees bar and start talking sports, I always bring up Ward to see if they follow boxing. Most know him as the guy from the Olympics and that he had a fight in Oakland. The Miranda fight got pretty big publicity over here. It's cool.

Hmm.. what you're saying is a bit inconsistent/hypocritical.
Haye comes from a council estate in south-east London (light-years from any sliver spoon treatment), has been boxing since he was nine, won a world amateur silver medal and became the undisputed world cruiserweight champion.
Surely a man with the lower level ring experience you've had respects that?
He has a big mouth. It's part of selling a fight. You must understand that too, right?

Hey my man this started simply as a Bernstein disagreement but like many Haye phanatics do. You have flipped this discussion upside down inside out and made it about Haye. I simply don't like Haye for what he did. I haven't knocked him for his talent I simply do not like him as a person or of him calling out the Klitschko's and then tuck tail run and hide. Then say it was a back injury oh wait it was about him not getting paid enough. That's kids stuff. I hated Tyson but at least when he called his man out he had the balls to fight them.

I don't care whether you like Haye or not. Your original post is a little hypocritical considering what you have written about him. You can't accuse people of unjustly slagging fighters off when you are guilty of the same, thats all.
No big deal. ;)

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
Teddy Atlas is a comlpete bloody half wit, I mean he really is a cretinous moron. I'm absolutely fed up of his ridiculous analogies about rooms in his house. FFS, "he goes downstairs", "he's up in the utility room", "he doesn't want to spend too much time in the garage with the engine running", "If he doesn't put on the extractor fan whilst cooking curry in the kitchen, the observatory might be a little smelly bit later on".
He does it with other things too. He seems to come up with the most inapplicable, ludicrous metaphor for what he's seeing, then sticks to it resolutely and over-extends it, despite it being dubious to begin with.
There was an example in the Cloud-Woods fight on the weekend about cars, but they usually follow this sort of pattern, "Woods is like an old Mk V Jaguar, that's been down lots of roads and had years of racing. It didn't win every race, but it's reliable, durable and hard working. However, whenever it's raced in the USA, where it has to drive on the other side of the road, it's came up second best. Will Woods be able to fine tune his performance like the engine of this jaguar, and put the final application of turtle wax on it tonight, or will it be shipped back to the UK in deafeat? Or some stuff like that.
He also has a habit of making one or two rudimentary and bleeding obvious points like, "the guy that's got a 6 inch reach advantage wants to fight from the outside". He will then proceed to repeat this over and over and over again, ad nauseam, for the rest of the fight. He'll mention it every time the tall guy fights from the outside. He'll refer to it every time the tall guy gets dragged into a toe to toe brawl. He'll fill the breaks between rounds talking about whether or not the tall guy is or isn't doing what he reckons he should, accompanied by replays showing so much more, He'll sum up by either saying 1. The tall guy did what I said and won, or 2.The tall guy didn't do what I said and lost. The guy bloody repeats himself so much that I usually end up shouting at the TV screen or just turning down the volume.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
I think the criticism Teddy makes of writers on the net is valid, however, I feel its a problem that is far more widespread than simply internet writers. Many more mainstream writers seem to follow similar trends when writing often letting their personal interactions with a fighter influence how they write about them & their performances (looking at you, Dougie Fischer & Steve Kim).
It seems a trend that many of these guys choose to write in a style whereby they try & project some kind of literary tough guy image & all too often seem to believe that the odd decent article makes them the heir to the likes of Mailer & Schullberg. Maybe because boxing writers have been so good throughout history, possibly the best across the board compared to any other sport, that now that the standard has dropped it is more noticeable, particularly to someone who has been around as long as Teddy Atlas, hence his criticism.
-
Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
The truth is everyone is bias in some way... i have pissed off and lost many a good writer for not publishing somthing i seen as libelus for the site or even a boxers career.
i wish alot of other sites would follow suit, i also have a pet hate on sensationalist who do an interview with a boxer and twist a joke of the cuff comment and turn it into a serious fact or will make up any old shit just to get traffic. the boxing sites that do this i avoid like the plague.
for me its about promoting the sport i love... i aint here to call this or that promoter or fighter. i will however express my opinion on the forum on things but never on the main page of the site.
boxing need the internet BIGTIME... not everyone will get it and not everyone likes but regardless of if your for or against it, its here and its here for good... you need to use it or get left behind watching fights on your betamax.
btw that was a fantastic read Al ;)

Great first post ;D Welcome!

He does it with other things too. He seems to come up with the most inapplicable, ludicrous metaphor for what he's seeing, then sticks to it resolutely and over-extends it, despite it being dubious to begin with.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
A few years ago in one of the FNF threads everyone was making their own Teddy analogies, it was a great thread. Awesome stuff and yeah Al Bernstein is 100% right and an awesome writer.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
That was a really enjoyable article. Bernstein is right in most of what he says. The Internet is important for boxing as coverage beyond that in the printed press is marginalised or else not covered at all. There might be a lot of dross, especially within message boards, but outside of that credible analysis does exist. The Internet is actually my only source of information for boxing, I have no alternatives...but all in all I think it serves me well and gets the job done.

Re: Al Bernstein On Boxing: Sorry To Disagree, But...
I think it's a fair bet the Teddy Atlas doesn't spend a lot of his life on his computer, if indeed he has one. If he has read any message board postings about himself then it's likely that this won't have made him see the boxing part of the internet in a positive light. He sounds like an old grandad getting upset about how things aren't the same as they used to be. And come on, we all know he's always wrong about fights so why is it a surprise that he's wrong about boxing and the internet?
The internet is the best thing to happen to boxing as far as creating and maintaining a fan base since Ali. In Britain I'd get exactly zero regular media coverage of any fight that wasn't British apart from megafights like Oscar Floyd. I'd only ever see what Sky can make money out of, there'd be no streams or Youtube or downloads of everything else to watch. But to be fair to Teddy he's involved in the business and isn't able to appreciate this and as far as the net goes I'd be amazed if he even has an email address. Probably in a few years if he's still punditing he'll come out and say, yeah, actually I'm looking at boxing stuff on the internet now and maybe some of it isn't so bad. Or maybe he gets the boot from ESPN and in a few years he's doing a column for Bloody Nose Boxing. :)

for me its about promoting the sport i love... i aint here to call this or that promoter or fighter. i will however express my opinion on the forum on things but never on the main page of the site.
boxing need the internet BIGTIME... not everyone will get it and not everyone likes but regardless of if your for or against it, its here and its here for good... you need to use it or get left behind watching fights on your betamax.
btw that was a fantastic read Al ;)
Agreed on all accounts but I do think that every now and then when there is a wrong done iot should be addressed, though like you said when it comes to just dogging a fighter or promoter in paticular then it becaomes tasteless and the credibility of the whole article just goes to crap because it can be seen through as personal hate.
There is a way to bring up something that is just not correct and a way not to, EG address the situtaion not the people involved directly unless they are dead to rights wrong!!! But even then there is a way to get it across without causing too much static.
Great read AL
