defense goes to Floyd as well, so does less wear and tear
as far as quality of opponents i dunno
Mayweather has:
Genaro Hernandez
Angel Manfredy
Emanuel Agustus
Diego Corrales (when he was undefeated)
Carlos Hernandez
Jesus Chavez
Jose Luis Castillo (twice)
DeMarcus Corley
Arturo Gatti
Zab Judah
Carlos Baldomir (say what you will, he was the lineal champ)
Oscar De La Hoya (at 154)
Ricky Hatton (at 147)
Juan Manuel Marquez (jumped 2 divisions, while being lineal champ at 135)
Pacquiao has:
Lehlohonolo Ledwaba
Agapito Sanchez
Emmanuel Lucero
Marco Antonio Barrera (twice)
Erik Morales (1 loss, 2 wins)
Juan Manuel Marquez (1 draw, 1 win)
Oscar Larios (came up 2 divisions after a bad TKO Loss)
David Diaz
Oscar De La Hoya (at 147)
Ricky Hatton (at 140, Hatton's "best" weight)
Miguel Cotto (at 145 catchweight, IMO Pacquiao's best win)
all in all i'd actually say that they're about even in quality, given the big names, and when they took them on

Re: Floyd-Pacquiao advantages/disadvantages
Anyone who thinks that you can measure a fighter on paper like this, is under some serious illusions. Heart? How are you supposed to measure/compare someone's will to win when the fight has not even been scheduled?

If you took that approach to everything, then we wouldn't have much to talk about on here would be :-\

I forgot about "Defense" and sure it goes to Floyd. We might as well include "Offense" which goes to Pacquiao. One thing that makes this fight very interesting since we have a defensive genius at one end and a well-oiled offensive machine on the other end.
I can accept that "quality of opponents" might be EVEN.

You can base it or try to measure it from their previous fights.

not really, IMO Mayweather puts combo's together better than Manny, and he has a wider variety of punches, he knocked Hatton out throwing a hook on the backfoot, i don't see Manny being able to do that, seeing how he basically lunges in and puts all of his body weight/force into his shots

Putting everything on equal terms, Pacquiao put on a much better offensive performance on their common opponents (Oscar and Ricky). Pacquiao also throws punches in bunches from weird angles and position. That's why I considered his offense more lethal compared to Floyd.

again DLH was a lot farther along when he took on Pacquiao than when he fought Mayweather
and Mayweather hit Marquez a lot more, a lot harder, and with a wider variety of punches than Pacquiao ever had, it's not just one way buddy

You have a very good point. Although mine still stands, some traits are easier to contrast (and comprehend) than others.

It's 2 (Oscar & Ricky) against 1 (JMM) so at minimum, Pacquiao has the edge.
Pacquiao is also well known to destroy his opponents by winning via KO/TKO. He has a higher KO percentage compared to Floyd. You have to give the "offense" factor to Pacquiao even if it's only a slight advantage.

if anything it's 1 to 1 cause given how shot Oscar was it shouldn't even be counted, cause going by logic hell Khan should get the edge over Pac cause he pretty much had Barrera on the ropes and not doing much (although it was more cause of the cut than anything), Floyd would probably take David Diaz out a lot quicker than Manny did, would it prove anything? no
offense isn't measured by power alone, it's measured on your ability to put your punches together and land, IMO the more accurate of the two is Floyd, and the way he lands at will against world class opposition and makes it look easy gives him the edge in offense

You got a point maybe except "workrate". Floyd got to throw more against someone like Pacquiao who has an excellent workrate.

On paper, this fight seems to be a toss up unlike the Floyd-JMM fight where Floyd almost had all the advantages.

I am convinced of my original assertion and nothing will sway me from that view. It really could go either way, and I hope the fight happens. It's a fight in which I too shall become a hugger of testicles. Though I won't hug them quite as tightly as Bruce Lee.

You think this fight is a toss-up, on paper it looks like an EVEN match-up, this fight could very well be a 50-50 fight. That's what makes it very interesting and exciting fight. Defense vs. Offense.
BTW, no one beats Bruce in terms of hugging tightly.

How would you know about BruceLee, you're a new poster, it's odd that you're able to do that unless you're someone who's been here before & is posing under a new identity ;D

I noticed this BruceLee guy being the big winner here for the recent Pacquiao-Cotto fight. He's winning avatar bets, sig bets, etc. so he must be a big Pacquiao supporter.

I answered your question 11 minutes after you posted it.
Let's go guys and discuss boxing. I'm here as a newbie (new beginnings) in this boxing forum.

Re: Floyd-Pacquiao advantages/disadvantages
I think there is no way Team Mayweather would let Pacquiao beat Floyd. If they feel he is going to lose I'm preparing for his entire entourage to rush into the ring. I'm serious. If Team Mayweather feel Floyd is going to lose I expect him to be instructed to try and get disqualified by fouling with his elbows and then blame the loss on the referee for not allowing him to fight his style. I then expect him to somehow blame this on Roach's insistance on a certain type of referee and that Team Pacquiao and Bob Arum had rigged the fight from the start. If Team Mayweather feels Floyd will lose I expect this to turn into a foul filled fight from both sides and I literally expect Roger Mayweather to attack Pacquiao.

The first two actually go to floyd as floyd has way more experience than PAC..Floyd had a very long amateur career. This why PAC is just now becoming a well rounded fighter.
And Floyd has beaten a wider variety of opponents meaning styles, where as Manny was protected from fighting slick boxers and still to this day hasn't fought a slick boxer.
HEART - I don't know how you measure this but I think its just a dumb way of trying to give manny an "advantage", Why doesn't floyd have heat? Because he's undefeated? Well it takes more heart than one gets credit for to constantly lace 'em up with the huge target on his back that floyd has.
And As far as Recent activity, this could very easily count against Manny as he himself just stated that he wants a vacation because the cotto fight was very tough, not to mention they've been riding him over the last two years. with 5 fights. Where as Floyd has been resting and came back with an easy tune up against a very good small man.
-
Re: Floyd-Pacquiao advantages/disadvantages
^I agree with the "Ring Experience". Mayweather was fighting for a title while Pacquiao wasnt even on the scene.
Mayweather also wins in the "Ring General" category, which is probably the main thing to consider. Mayweather always seems to control the pace of a fight. If he does so against Pacquiao, Pacquiao is in for a long night.
To me it boils down to this: Pacquiao wins by beating up his opponents. Mayweather wins by outclassing them. I have never ever seen Mayweather beaten up to the extent that Pacquiao needs to beat him up, but I have seen Pacquiao outboxed by lesser boxers.
There's a reason why Pacquiao's people have kept him away from slick boxers, and I think we're going to see why if this fight were to happen.

I say amateur and pro were 2 different animals. There were boxers beaten in the amateurs but did good in the pro ranks and vice versa. I'm only counting the experiences of both Floyd and Pacquiao in their pro career. Pacquiao is a 15 year veteran with 55 total pro fights fought from flyweight to welterweight divisions. Floyd is a 13 year veteran with 40 total pro fights. "Ring Experience" should go to Pacquiao, no doubt about that.
"Quality of Opponents" might be EVEN as revised earlier in the thread.
I gave "Heart"(or guts) to Pacquiao since we had already seen Pacquiao fighting with a lot of heart against tough competition. This factor is still a big question mark in Floyd's side. What will happen if Floyd gets cut, hit flush and drawn in a bloody war? Will Floyd fold? It's a big question mark. So I would rather give this factor to the proven boxer as against the one where it's still a question mark.
I still give "Recent Activity" to Pacquiao. He's been fighting regularly while Floyd was having vacation (retirement) from time to time. Those recent Pacquiao wars will prepare him to face the bigger wars ahead while Floyd is enjoying a soft tune-up where he almost had all the advantages.

Two months after Floyd got his 1st title at 130, Pacquiao got his 1st title too and it's a lineal one at 112. Pacquiao beat the man that beat the man.
Regarding ring generalship, Pacquiao is also very good in controlling the pace of the fight. He can dictate the pace even against bigger men. He has them back pedaling at times.
Pacquiao been criticized that he didn't fought a slick boxer, that he didn't fought a "black" boxer. I'm sure Pacquiao is not afraid to face the mother of all slick, "black" boxers and that's Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Of course he'll fight mayweather, its worth money..but he should have already faced slick fighters. Zahir Raheem would have taxed his ass he instead opted to faced morrales after raheem gave him a one sided ass whooping right in front of pacman.

No need to argue since this is 4 years too late. What's infront of Pacquiao right now is the mother of all slick "black" boxers, Floyd Jr. and not Zahir Raheem. Pacquiao is ready to fight Floyd and it will put to rest any accusations that Pacquiao is avoiding slick boxers and "black" boxers.

I agree that Mayweather has a wider variety of punches but I don't understand how someone can argue that he is a better combination puncher. In my opinion he is a potshotter who only begins to put together combos in the later rounds as a result of earlier strategic feints and single punches. It is only after he has controlled the range, the pace the fight is fought and timed his opponents that he begins to open up and even then they are usually 2 punch combinations. A good example of this is how he began landing left jab to the solar plexus, straight right combos against De la Hoya in the "championshop rounds". He had feinted left jabs to the head then landed left jabs to the body in the earlier rounds. Later on he disturbed De la Hoya's timing by leaving his left glove in his face before jabbing the body and landing straight rights. I don't remember him landing the combos that Pacquiao did against Hatton or De la Hoya (yes I know he was weight drained) and I don't see him doing it against Cotto. Technically Mayweather could but his lack of power and mentality make it more intelligent for him to potshot. I also don't understand how he can have the same stamina as Pacquiao. Sure we've never seen him tired but when has Pacquiao faded? Who has the higher workrate?

No way the trainers are even, not even close for that matter! Floyd would still be Floyd without Roger. but Pacquiao would not be on the same level without Freddie Roach! Roger Mayweather equals woman beating mentally hadicapped uncle riding his nephews coat tail!

Pac does have great stamina...especially considering how active he is in he ring. But Floyd's stamina is as good as any fighters...for all of his arrogance and flash...the man trains incredibly hard. Another thing about Floyd is that his body is relaxed. He is so light on his feet, so fluid...you rarely see him in a state of tension...which of course conserves energy. Will he be able to maintain that state against a relentless fighter like Manny...not sure. But Floyd doesn't care how he wins...if he needs to be defensive and run...he will. He will not be lulled into a brawl. And Manny...for all of his toughness and athletic brilliance...is very hittable. Because the speed factor will not be in Pac's favor in this fight as compared to his other recent bouts...i will have to say Floyd's superior skill and ability to adapt will make him the favorite. But Manny has tremendous momentum...and Floyd has not faced a prime, great fighter in a very long time (and some will argue he has never faced a GREAT prime fighter). So should be great fight.

Bookies do it all the time. It's very common.
