The Super Six is not dead. Fact.
Next Fights.. Froch-Kessler. Ward-Taylor (assuming Taylor continues). Dirrell-Abraham.
Froch beats Kessler, big deal he's damaged goods. Kessler beats Froch it does nothing to extinguish the Ward defeat. Whoever wins it wont put them anywhere near the top of the supermiddle tree.
Ward-Taylor means nothing to the tournament. Taylor needs to retire. Either way he'll start a huge underdog.
Abraham-Dirrell is arguably the only worthwhile fight of the second round. Abraham looked great bashing Taylor and Dirrell was "robbed" ().
The 3rd round.. Kessler-Taylor. Froch-Abraham. Dirrell-Ward.
All three fights only make sense if they all win in round two. Which is clearly impossible.
The Super Six don't work. Fact.

I admit that Taylor needs out of this. He was already beaten by Froch before the tournament, so why was he allowed in anyway? To get his ass kicked again. They really need to substitute him with someone else.
Actually at this point it is a three man race now. Abraham, Ward, and Dirrell. Froch should have lost, Kessler did and Taylor is shot. Let Ward and Dirrell fight and the winner of that fight Abraham. And call it a day on the tournament.
-
Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
I think it's far from dead, but I have been a bit disappointed so far, mainly by refereeing.
Taylor-Abraham was by far the best & unlike others I'm not sure Taylor is that shot. The only complaint I actually had here was the bullshit point deduction on Taylor, which arguably led him to opening up too much & getting stopped in search of a KO that was never going to come against Abraham.
Froch-Dirrell was a shit fight, characterized by excess holding from Dirrell & rabbit-punching & the odd judo move from Froch. Add to the fact Dirrell clearly won imo & you ended up with a controversy it could have done without. As if the judging wasn't bad enough & downright corrupt in the case of Massimo Barrovecchio giving the 11th to Froch, the referee Nestor Afu was also a hometown ref, taking a point for Dirrell for holding, but taking nothing from Froch for his rabbit-punches & hip throw.
Ward-Kessler was fairly judged imo, I didn't see a shutout, I thought Kessler took 2 of the 10 scored rounds, but it was dominant by Ward. Again the problem was the refereeing. Jack Reiss allowed Ward to get away with everything, which in his case included punching in the clinch, holding his left arm out rather than jabbing, ducking low, charging in like a bull in Pamplona & of course excessive clinching. Reiss saying 'let him go Mikkel' rather than breaking them up gave Ward a big advantage because it gave him time to land punches as Kessler let go because of his superior handspeed. I don't think Kessler would have won without it, but I do think it changed the fight somewhat.
Still, I think the 2nd round is good. I see Kessler beating Froch, whilst I don't think either Taylor or Dirrell can be counted out against Ward or Abraham just because the style matchups are good & ideally all the fighters who lost in the first round would win in the second.
It's still great for boxing & the fact that Fenster has no said that it's impossible for all 3 to win, now leads me to believe that Kessler, Dirrell & Taylor will all be victorious. Fact ;D

Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
I made that post without seeing the fight. Going by the reports I thought Kessler was thrashed with Ward putting on a masterclass (:vd:). I've now seen the fight. It wasn't half as bad as most have made out.
I take back what I said.
Kessler wasn't humiliated just outhustled by a tricky faster guy on his home-turf. I wouldn't completely write Kessler off if they fought again.
The Super Six is still alive (just). Fact.

I think you should pick Kessler in the next prediction contest. I agree, he's a live dog.

I'm talking about if in Denmark (which is clearly never gonna happen).
You see that way when Jesus comes forward missing punches the judges and commentators wont be so influenced by the cheering home crowd.

Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
that almost sounds like you're mocking the Son of God?
Anyway that will never happen since all American contestants will refuse to go to Europe after the Froch debacle, clearly the only fair thing to do is to have the fights in America, after all did you see the scorecards, where were all these rounds they found for Kessler? Its like they were consciously not trying to be as corrupt as the Euro judges and overcompensated. :-\
-
Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
You mean as corrupt as the judges sent into Europe to judge. Not Euro judges. Yes we all know Amercians are scared to travel.
I'm not mocking Jesus. He's a class fighter. I don't mind a guy that has skill and knows how to play dirty. That's a good sign. Like Hopkins.
Rantcatrat, I love the Super Six. I'm just saying how it can't work not that I want it to fail.

Probably the same place press row found them. I had Kessler winning 5 & either 9 or 10 can't remember which. I'm with Fenster, Ward was very impressive but I think the crowd & Gus Johnson climbing up Ward's arsehole (surely a contravention of his religious beliefs :-\) meant that viewers had a different take.
I can't defend the Froch thing though, but I have to say last night has made me dislike Ward intensely. I'm just glad that him & Froch can't meet in the group stage, it means I get at least 4 more fights of wanting to watch them both get KO'd.

Technicalities. At least one of the three judges brought in was bought off. Fact. The other was maybe a big fan of rabbit punches?
Roy Jones getting screwed in Korea means no U.S. fighter ever has to travel as you well know, Dirrell/Froch was just reinforcement for those that that must of forgot.

Ward-Froch would be like Hagler-Hearns for him ;)

Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
my only problem with this tournament is how they manage to keep it together, for example if dirrel is knocked out by abraham next round then why would he stick around for his 3rd fight, knowing he cant get through and facing a third straight loss, same with taylor, if he loses again, its too late to get a replacment for the last round of fights
-
Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
Everyone showed up for the first round so it's got farther than I expected.
I don't think it's dead at the are still many different styles to be matched. Nothing is a certainty at this point.
It's pretty cool when you can say 9 of the top 10 Super Middleweights have in their last fight or their next fight, fought another top 10 Super Middleweight.

Re: The Super Six is dead. Fact.
going in US seem the only way to get a fair fight ??? alllo ??? wake up son, we just saw how "fair" was the referee during Kessler-Ward. ward was allowed to do whatever he wanted to do, clinch, headbutt, and so on....
Nobody finds it strange that a week ago all referees for the fights were US based ?? I mean common, it was not accidental at all.
a fair fight is either in Europe/US but with true neutral and impartial referees !!!!

Yes but with Froch-Dirrell you had corrupt refereeing and corrupt judging, here you just had corrupt refereeing. Clearly as far as fairness goes U.S.A.>Britain.

I've been trying out my best Fenster impersonation this whole thread but to be serious for once Fenster what's a masterclass if that wasn't one? That was shockingly dominant. Kessler barely landed anything and Ward just toyed with him.
Edit-Froch-Dirrell was a debacle though.

It was to ugly/disjointed for a masterclass. Very impressive performance.

I see your point, however, I disagree and I think that it doesn't kill the interest in the end: The thrill to me is not that much to know who will win the whole thing but to see the bests fighting the bests and not grossing their roster with some Zelenoff. Sure, to know who will win is a part of the whole fun but I appreciate even more to see all these different clash of style and of good boxers on such a short period of time, that is the big point of the tournament and it corrects something that MMA does and boxing didn't: loads of quality and meaningful matches to find out who is really the best.
At the end, even if Taylor would have go get out and be replaced by let's say Green or Lucian Bute, even if these two couldn't win the tournament because of the mathematical probabilities (i.e imagine that Abraham wins a second fight via K.O and that Ward wins his second contest too), wouldn't it be nice to see them step in with the best of the division too? I think it would be ecstatic, and that doesn't mean that they couldn't fight the winner or the top 2 of the tournament after it is finished.

Re: The Super Six is nearly dead. Fact.
We`ve now gone from having 3 potential winners to 4 in the space of one fight
The main man and favourite to win has just been TKO`d, even calzaghe couldnt do that
The upcoming fights see arguably the top 2 in the division squaring off, andre dirrell flying over to the mother land in a fight he has to win against an unbeaten AA and taylor in complete last chance saloon squares off against the most impressive of the 6fighters so far
I really cant see how exactly this could be dead already??

Abraham-Dirrell is in the States. Dirrell has already said he'll never again fight outside America.
Taylor needs to retire. And probably will. He's lost 4 of his last 5 fights and been badly KO'd in three. The Ward fight is pointless.
And lets not start making Ward into something he's not. Kessler was stopped by headbuts tearing his face apart. The fight wasn't stopped through damage Ward did with his fists. ;)

ward owned him for like 8 of the 10 rounds
The only rounds kessler won were the ones were not much went down. Almost every time they engaged ward get the better of it. Agreed the guy was clearly nutting kess but he still did a number on him
Dirrell-AA will be in germany mark my words. He is there main attraction now, andre barely has a fan stateside and could no way sell tickets in the US like AA could in germany
Agreed taylor is shot and showtime should be looking into a suitable replacement. But he aint been a punching bag for any of his losses and if he fights ward im more than confident he`ll hold his own for at least 9-10rounds

Re: The Super Six is nearly dead. Fact.
I don't care how well Jesus won, the fight was stopped due to injuries sustained through headbutts. Not punches. So saying he TKO'd Kessler something Calzaghe couldn't do is ridiculous.
Mark your words it's in Germany? OK...
Gary Shaw (Dirrell's promoter) - We're not going to Germany. The Dirrell fight is here in the United States. There's a lot of rumors that it's in Germany, but it's not. We'll fight Arthur Abraham, I know he'll do well.

This is the Super Six. They have agreements and dodgy handshakes in place. Didn't you watch the Super Six 24/7 type programme where all the promoters were together wheeling and dealing?
The reason Jesus didn't have to leave America is because they agreed on his first fight with Kessler being stateside and his next two are against Americans.
Everyone else has to travel.
Dirrell to England.
Taylor to Germany.
Kessler to USA.
Froch to Denmark.
Arthur to America.

Good Post Hatton.
It's not like Kessler is by any means out of this tournament yet. I would give him a good chance against Abraham, Froch, Dirrell and even Ward in a rematch. And Dirrell just barely lost to Froch; he has to be a live dog against Abraham.
- Abraham (3). If he beats Dirrell with a knockout, he is clearly in the lead going into the next round.
- Ward (2) - He'll face Taylor or Green next. I doubt we'll see him stop Taylor even if he wins and if Green steps in for Taylor, I like Green's chances as underdog. If he lost his next round the whole tournament is up in the air. If he wins, Abraham and Ward are in the top two places.
- Froch (2). He loses against Kessler by a wide margin. Movement may beat Kessler, but Froch doesn't move. He loses and we have Froch and Kessler tied at 3 and 4.
- Kessler (0) - He beats Froch and gains two or three points.
- Taylor/Green could beat Ward.
- Dirrell - tough match against Arbaham but he was the on the outside looking in from tbe beginning.
Edit: Ward only gets two points.
