I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
When the Super Six was announced, I really considered Ward a rank outsider, who had basically no chance of winning the tournament. Even when I read reports by experts believing Ward had what it took to beat Kesler, I didn't believe it. So I was totally wrong, and I must admit I was so impressed by Ward last night.
What shocks me though is that so many people have come on here claiming that the headbutts where intentional. C'mon people, what fight where you watching? Ward was awesome last night. He put on a clinic. He didn't run, he backed Kessler up on numerous occasions and beat the crap out of him. Seriously, if the doctor hadn't stopped it I could have seen the fight being stopped by the referee because he was starting to take some big shots. C'mon guys, give Ward credit, that was totally impressive.

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Dammit!!!!
I put Ward in my top three picks...but really didn't expect him to blaze through Kess the way that you say he did.
No shit...I'm shocked. I gave Ward a shot at beating everyone outside of Kessler & Abraham...which is who I thought would be the last men standing...we shall see.

People will say he totally dominated others will say it was a dirty job, best to watch it for yourself before getting bombarded with bias either way.

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Totally agree.Way to many excuses today in general.I dont think it was intentional and no one had Kesslers hands tied behind his back.I picked Kessler to get to him late,Ward fought an outstanding fight and was not exactly zahir raheem in there. He stepped into Kessler, pushed him very early on and fought him.

I'd say both

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
It was a whole lot of one and a tiny bit of the other. He had some tricks up his sleeve on the inside but he absolutely schooled him. Ward could have fought the whole fight like he did in the first 2 rounds, only change it up occasionally, and won nearly every round of the fight. Ward went out and on the outside, where Kessler is at his absolute best, shut him down, outquicked him and didn't let him get set to punch.
Where was Kessler's vaunted right hand? The one that Edison Miranda landed so well against Ward? Shut down, did he land a single one? It was in fact a masterclass and the scorecards are evidence of it. A bit dirty, not always the prettiest but Ward essentially won every minute of that fight. A masterclass on the best fighter of the tournament.

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
And btw- Ward showed a clear distinction between his style of fighting and Dirrell's. Not that it needs pointing out but Ward showed how you can still use your hand and foot speed advantages to be aggressive. Ward was a lot of things last night, 'negative' was not one of them.
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
ward's a whole lot better than dirrell. not nearly as sloppy.

You're a 'negative' poster :p;D

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Does anybody really think Ward should have had a point taken off for holding? If you do you're way overdoing how much he was holding. I didn't have a problem with the point taken from Dirrell for excessive holding (although that ref was worse than this one overall) but to take one from Ward would have been absurd.
And punching in the clinch? Really? This is boxing ffs. A lot of the time it was happening it was Kessler holding anyway. And the ref would break them which helped Kessler if anything cause he absolutely didn't even attempt to fight inside. LOL at punching in the clinch. Its exactly what Froch was doing except Ward was actually punching Kessler in legal areas of the body instead of the back of the head.
I've gotta check the headbutts again but that's all that I think is that questionable. I've just downloaded a good copy of the fight that I can send to people who are outraged about it but haven't seen it.

the headbutts were hardly a case of their heads meeting whilst engaging, ward was leading with the head, especially the butt that caused the fight ending cut, kesslers head was stationary and ward just pushed his head in kesslers face...
no excuses though, kessler was getting schooled, he couldnt handle wards movement and didnt really have time to set his feet
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Only have gotten to round 4 and Ward looks amazing in the fight, and up until this point he is fighting the perfect fight.
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Although a lot of this has been hilariously over blown Jaz was right about Ward holding his left out as a measuring stick, refs should watch that in his future fights.
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Ward's headbutts were totally unintentional.
I personally don't know how anyone can't give Ward credit for his performance last night.
He just dominated the man who was regarded as the best super middleweight in the world.
Ward outboxed, outpunched and outhustled him.

look at the second butt, the one that opened the cut over kesslers right eye at the 5:30 mark
http://www.youtube.com/v/BbY83_XZjE4&hl=en_GB&fs=1
his hands are by his side and he brings the head up into kesslers face, BEFORE trying to clinch
if it wasnt intentional what was ward trying to achieve by just throwing himself up against kessler with his hands down ?
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
He lunges a lot. He needs to watch that even if its not intentional.
Anyway maybe the tenth round headbutt was intentional, maybe he thought I'm beating the fuck out of this dude, its time to butt him. :-\
Other than that (and its impossible to say it was out and out intentional) there's not much there outside of the way he uses his left hand. The holding and punching in the clinch arguments are absurd.

I watched it a second time and i stand by my first opinion.
It was an accident.
Ward threw a punch but lunged forward when he threw it.
The momentum from the lunge made Ward clash heads with Kess.
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
OumaFan and Pugilistic have it right, Ward lunges a lot, he was a bit high strung at that moment in the fight with Kessler frustrated and on the verge of being out of there, it was an accident. Buuut he does need to be careful and it's not like Kessler was going to score any sort of stoppage, it was almost mercy on him.
FACT remains that the head-butt happened in the second to last round, the only relevance that the headbutt carries is that it changes the result of the fight to a Technical Decision rather then a Unanimous Decision or possibly a TKO.

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Whether the butts were intentional or not they clearly had an impact on the fight and tainted Jesus win.

I agree with you there. I also think Uncle Roger putting Zab Judah in a headlock clearly had an impact on their fight and tainted Floyd's win. I bet Judah would fare better in a chokehold-less rematch.

did you watch the video or decide upon your response beforehand ? he throws the shot and lead foot lands, followed by him pushing off his back foot which brings the head up into kesslers face
you make it seem as if ward has no control over his own body and just flops around the ring and its your fault if you get in the way of his forehead

Would you have believed Froch was gonna KO Taylor in their fight?
You can never say never in this boxing lark.
Although we can be pretty sure had Jesus got in trouble his ref would have helped him survive. Fact.

Ward lunges with his punches quite alot.
I don't understand why people care so much about a intentional or unintentional headbutt anyway, It wasn't like that changed the momentum of the fight.
Ward dominated from ROUND 1.

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Taylor is a bundle of nerves in the ring, it's always a possibility. I might be inclined to agree except for the fact that Kessler was looking for a way out much earlier in the fight telling his corner he couldn't see. Also I'm not sure Kessler's right hand ever even touched Ward's head, it would have been pretty out there.
Jesus is King ;)

Absolutely spot on desciption. Ward was Mayweather like last night. Even Roy Jones like. I was so impressed. For me, a star was born last night.

Ward dominated from ROUND 1.
ye ill be the first to admit kessler was taken to school, almost every flaw in his game was shown up
however the headbutts are a talking point, i personally think ward was perhaps tiring a little (his punch output did drop) and was using the rough tactics just to ensure there was no late surge from kessler
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
LOL, he was still dominating the fight. Sorry I just find it hard to believe that.
Regardless he needs to watch his head.

why ?
i personally find it hard to believe that all FIVE head clashes were unitentional when it was kessler on the recieving end every time
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
I am stunned by this result, i never gave Ward any chance against Kessler. I picked Kessler to win the whole thing and he gets well beaten by Ward. This is a poor effort by Kessler and it will be a long time before he has another major fight night.
-
Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
Why? Because it makes no sense. At all.
The ass kicking was just getting worse round by round, why would it make sense that there and then is the point to try to end the fight with a headbutt? Seriously, that makes sense?
Where were the five head clashes by the way? I have a copy so I could go back and watch, I only noticed a couple.

the ref himself stated he noticed 5.... you could take it up with him i guess
i am not saying he tried to end the fight with it... as i said his punch output clearly drops and kessler was starting to become slightly, only very slightly more accurate with his shots... surely it isnt so hard to believe that ward was trying to knock him out his rythem a little
funny that there are no headclashes in the first few rounds when ward was fresh and firing a high volume of shots but quite a few later on...

Re: I was wrong, but i'm stunned by the reactin to last nights fight
later on when he was really kicking his ass? ;D
I guess I just tend to think of guys fouling out of desperation or even to gain an edge in a close fight, which yeah wasn't the case here. I really don't get the uproar over this fight, at least with the headbutts there's something there but last night you had Kel and Miles going nuts about the holding and there was no way Ward should have had a point taken for holding, not even close.
Maybe if I watch again I'll check for my headbutts, there were only two-three really noticeable ones that Kessler seemed bothered by.
-

the one thing i found weird was when the ref would break a clinch its as if he wasnt putting distance between the fighters like he should have just litteraly breaking the hold but leaving them at the same range and ward would go straight back to it without a shot being thrown inbetween at times

Ok that's nitpicking. Kessler was shit on the breaks btw, just flatfooted and 2 or 3 times Ward just lunged in with right hands that connected, some of Ward's best punches. That's not the referees fault, it's Kessler's for being lackadaisical on breaks and just shows how ring-smart and aware Ward really is. Btw on at least one of the headbutts was Ward trying to free his tied up left hand and Kessler wouldn't let go which led to one clash.
