Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Im a big fan of Joan Guzman but he is a very frustrating fighter, to be a fan of. But no doubt he is incredibly skilled, i personally didn't see the fight but from all articles im reading, it seems Ali Funeka was robbed. But everyone said that about the Nate Campbell fight, and i thought that was a draw personally. So can anyone fill me in ? cheers.

Big robbery mate, go look at my rbr in the main Bute/Andrade thread at the top.
I had it 117-112 Funeka, basically last six round Funeka dominated him while Guzman becmae very tired.

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Onle look at Joan's face will tell the true story. He looked like a cheese and susage pizza after that beat down. I had it 117-111. I love Canadainia boxing, but they need to exclude their own Referees officials from participating.:banghead:

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
It was a fairly disgusting result and an embarrassment. Gotta feel for Funeka to put that kind of performance on and get robbed. And that is what it was. He not only dominated, but kept his strength and accumulated round after round as the wear and tear on Guzman became ever more obvious. No way should it have been any where close to a draw. Disgusting. Disappointing. And a sad testimony to the state of officiating in boxing.

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Cheers guys i think Joan Guzman is a wasted talent, and because he's style is mostly reflexes and speed. He could very well be past his prime already, which is a shame because i am a fan of his.
As for Ali Funeka i think he's a solid fighter, but IMO he just doesn't seem to be quite up there with the top fighters. He's like the Joshua Clottey of the Lightweights, he could trouble anyone but i just think over the years your going to be seeing alot of "Ali Funeka just misses out".

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
he seems to be one of the worst finishers in the game
and to answer the question...its a resounding YES!!!

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Pretty much Joan got a big gift, I think after round 3 he may have taken 1 round for the rest of the fight. I also think Guzman's injuries (cuts and bloody nose) hindered his performance.
Anyone else think Funeka in the post fight interview was speaking a foreign language at first?? I know I did, until he started saying things loudly and angry I heard a bunch of mumbling and then "I TRAIN VERY HARD FOR THIS MY MAN!"....poor fella 2 trips to the US and 2 bad decisions, I hope he doesn't make the mistake of trying to fight Juan Diaz in Houston next.
Funeka needs to go for the KO though, he had Guzman on the ropes a couple times.

ha well too bad a robbery is what took you so long to post. Try not to let another 4 years go by for the next post. ;)

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
I honestly thought he was on the verge of getting seriously hurt.Had zero answers once Funeka got rolling over the second half and frankly is lucky Funeka does not have a finshing mean streak...was there to be taken out.

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
I thought it was an unlucky draw for Funeka. But judging on a round-by-round basis Guzman has claims to round -
1, 2, 4, 7 and 12 with 3 and 11 even.
So that means 115-115 is a gettable score.
Did Funeka LOOK the winner? Yes. Did he actually convincingly dominate these rounds? No.
Unlucky.. but that's boxing. ;)
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Oh, it was a certainly a gift.
A gift that made Wonka's Chocolate Factory look small.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
He made Joan look completely useless. Worst robbery of the year.

I can see what your saying there mate, there was a few close rounds I agree, It was Guzman throwing and being more aggressive but I thought the cleaner and more damaging blows were from Funeka.
I also agree with Lyle I think the damage to his nose especially did hamper him badly, I think it was a mistake to fight a guy like this in a 12 rounder after being out so long, he needed a warm up if you ask me.

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Here's one that's a little better than the one on youtube.
Google Translate
Yea looks like Guzman got lucky one this one but Ali did miss a lot of punches.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
It was the hell of a dubious decision and I wonder how the judges could see it.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
This fight was robbery at it's finest, Guzman was outboxed outslugged outeverything. :(
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
This fight was not close.Guzman was fighting like a one gear slugger and was nearly getting hit at will as it wore on.Christmas,Hanukkah and Kwanzaa all wrapped into one for Guzman.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
I thought this was a pretty good read on the fight:
Boxing News - BRC - Guzman vs Funeka star in: "Enough already with bogus decisions"... by Frank Gonzalez
"And its not just Canadian Judges or American or German Judges. It’s the same business all over the world. There are a lot of good things about boxing but there is a lot wrong with the crooked way it is administered. There’s nothing encouraging about following a sport that you can’t trust for honest competition and officiating. If anyone is hurting boxing, it’s all these crooked Official Judges. Send letters or emails to the IBF and let them know that we do not approve of the crooked decision that saw Funeka robbed of his victory. We all know boxing is more business than sport but good businesses do well because they build a good client base. Bad businesses ultimately fail because no one wants to buy what they’re selling. Pro Boxing only exists because of us—the fans who keep them in business. They know that. Enough is enough already! The head of the IBF should overturn this hideous result immediately. It’s garbage like this—that’s killing the legitimacy of boxing."

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Very bad robbery . Can someone think of one worst than that this year? Cause I can't
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
gotta be one of the worst this year. funeka and guzman fought on what was that of as a neutral ground and funeka got robbed. i could understand the malinaggi diaz fight coz it was in houston. i think funeka made guzman look foolish last night. guzman trying to showboat and getting tagged is a highlight of that fight. i think funeka is a good fighter.. a fine one at that. but he needs how to finish. he's got guzman staggerring around and could not hit him after that.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
Maliggnagi vs Diaz wasnt a robbery. It was a close fight but people aare overeggagerating the outcome . It could have gone either way. But i wont get off topic. Funika shouldnt even take a rematch, he won the fight in everyone's eyes except a couple blind or bribed judges.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
ali funeka definitely got robbed! those judges should just shoot themselves because they did funeka a great injustice.! guzman is a great fighter but funeka was clearly the superior boxer last night. he should get another chance immediately to win the title that was stolen from him last night.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
It was the robbery of the year. I had Funeka winning by several rounds. Not even close.
-
Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
I think Guzman was cocky to showboat in the midst of eating jabs and straights the whole night. I think he should fight Juan Diaz since their both beneficiaries of robberies;D

Re: Did Joan Guzman Get A Gift ?
not to mention rodel mayol. what that cheat did was fooking criminal and as soon as giovanni segura knocks his ass out, he should be banned from boxing!

I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Im a big fan of Joan Guzman and i have always said, at his best he is up there with the top names. But he has wasted his career, which is a shame.
But i just watched the full Ali Funeka vs Joan Guzman fight, and personally i was quite shocked how bad the decision was. Because sometimes just after the fight people overract and call fights a robbery, when infact there close fights that could go either way.
But not this time Ali Funeka done no worse than win by 8 rounds to 4, i think Joan Guzman was doing great in the first 2 rounds. He was getting low and making the taller opponent punch down a miss, which is textbook fighting for the shorter fighter. And he was landing great body shots, and his combinations were flowing nicely, and his countering was spot on.
Then im not quite sure what happened, but Joan Guzman's gameplan just went out of the window. I know Ali Funeka adjusted by doubling up on his jab and ETC.
But i do think that maybe the headbutt, and the bloody nose. Did effect Joan Guzman because after that he stood straight up, looping his punches even wider.
And he just seemed to not know what to do after the 2nd round, but props to Ali Funeka he reminds me a little bit of Maurice Blocker. He is a great little fighter, well not that little he is 6'1.
And the sport has basically kicked him in the teeth, at worse he got a draw against Nate Campbell, and at worse he won 8 rounds to 4 against Joan Guzman. I feel really sorry for Ali Funeka because he is a very good fighter.
And to be honest this is one of the worst robberies, in high profile fight that i've ever seen this decade. And despite me being a Joan Guzman fan, he did indeed get his ass kicked and was outboxed clearly.

I'm serious.
Watch the fight in silence (so you're not swayed by the silly over-the-top bias commentary), I guarantee you'll see Funeka MISS most of his punches, you'll still see Funeka as the winner but will also see how Guzman could have easily been awarded 6 rounds. Trust me.
That draw was doable. Fact.

Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Fenster, please tell me your being sarcastic. Because if your not, im gonna have to actually watch the fight and i would hate to witness a genuine robbery :(

Thanks to my kids and or antonio tarver i often watch non ppv fights without the sound....and i have to sorta agree. Judging each round by itself and not looking at guzmans apperance to judge punches landed it was a pretty close scrap. I still had funeka winning though.
-
Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
Jimmy, you need to watch it with the sound down otherwise it's pointless.
Good to see Mar saw it too. I'm not the only one. ;)
Some of the rounds were much closer than people realise due to A) commentator persuasion and B) unwittingly overstating the underdog's work when doing better than expected.
These are common mistakes we all make. Fact.
-
Re: I Hate To Say This But My Boy Joan Guzman Did Get Battered.
There are always people who say, "Well there were some close rounds, so it's really not that outrageous." I thought this would be the very rare occasion where this didn't happen. I'm really scratching my head as to how you guys are justifying this decision?! Juan looked totally frustrated, and even when he did land some good body shots, he had too many lapses in activity. Other than that, he threw all looping desperate rights at Ali's head that for all the desperation, had no chance of being meaningful, as he wasn't turning them over. I guess if it was a slap contest it was close...
Besides you all also say you think he won, even with all that rationalizing, so to me me that really equals robbery/horrible judging no matter how much sugar you put on it.

Ohh the merge, gotcha.Ahh Fenster ;D....as equally effective to watching with no Volume is actually watching with your eyes open ;D.If anything, the commentary was swaying Sugar Ray Guzmans way the first two rounds while Funeka was getting that jab rolling.Eventually they could not look past Guzmans lack of answers and his face falling into the likeness of a raw heavily sauced meatloaf seeing him reduced to waving Funeka in and hucking wide errand right hands. Not close, not full of nip and tuck rounds hard to score...just a pants around the ankles-bend and cough robe job on Funeka :fight:

He's suppose to be this, that and everything in between but in the end. He got Humberto Sotto and Jorge Barrios as his best wins. He can pick himself up by dedicating more to his job.
JMM only has Manuel Medina and Derrick Gainer at age 32. Guzman will falter if he doesnt act properly. PBF, Hopkins, Pac all stays in shape in between fights. Guzman should do the same if he wants to still fight at the big stages.
