Sorry Floyd...you had numerous chances to make the fight of the century happen. We are no longer waiting around for you! Top Rank is pleased to announce that Manny Pacquiao will defend his WBO welterweight championship title in a bout with Joshua Clottey, Saturday March 13, 2010! It's on!

You still blame Floyd?
What a surprise, Manny is fighting another Top Rank fighter who wont ask for tests..... I hope no one buys his fight.

There was no agreement the shit didnt get sorted out the fight in around 9 weeks away couldnt go on for much longer, Floyd has also spoke to Hattons people for a fight on the same date. I know which fight I will be watching.

Pac had just as many chances to make the fight happen as Floyd. In final negotiations Floyd gave up 14 days Pac only 6. Pac is to blame for the fight not happening. Now he will fight a couple of Top Rank fighters and retire so he is never tested. Your arguments have no basis except for a disliking of Floyd.

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
Makes sense Clottey gets a WBO title shot after losing his last fight was a WBO title shot.
Does Clottey know yet?

Top Rank announced that Pac would be fighting Malignaggi.
Malignaggi himself came out and said he had not been contacted.
Top Rank annouced Pac would be fighting Foreman.
Pacquiao and Roach came out and said Foreman was too tall.
What will be the issue this time?

I take everything these muppets say with a pinch of salt. These announcements are typically misleading or simply not true. I won't believe anything until Clottey says something.
Arum and Co. are garbage.

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
For some reason I don';t think the fight with Floyd is dead yet. I have a feeling in 1 week we'll get an anouncement that the fight is on.
Hey I know it's wishful thinking, but how many times have Arum said the fight was dead? It's like a boy crying wolf.
-
Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
It's not the superfight that PBF-Pacquiao would be (obviously), but as long as there aren't any bullshit catchweight stipulations Pacquiao - Clottey is a legitimate fight. I'm hard pressed to think of a more challenging opponent at 147 who would be able to make the Mar. 13 date.
-
Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
This is a very credible fight for all but one reason... it's not Mayweather. I still think there's enough time for that to get made. If there's nothing by next week then I'll finally give up hope.

I agree. Assuming it happens, which is a big assumption, the funny thing is now Pacquiao will have fought more legitimate welterweights in one year than Floyd has his whole career. :o Actually, it was already funny when he fought Cotto before Floyd did.
Neither Floyd or Manny are my favorite fighters, therefore, I am not as passionate about this as some of you guys have been. Where I stand on all of this is that at the end of the day, Pac should have submitted to the random tests to shut Floyd up, but nothing Floyd has done has changed my mind about his career over the last four years. Somehow Floyd, for good reason perhaps, managed to wiggle his way out of the first legitimate test he's ever faced at welterweight. Again, Pacquiao should have taken the tests, but still.
Since the Pac fight isn't happening, Floyd needs to silence his own critics and fight Shane or some other legitimate threat at or above his weight. Bottom Line. End of story.

So facing a bigger undefeated Ricky Hatton, or a Carlos Baldomir who just beat Judah and Gatti and was the linear WW champ, but also undefeated in over 8 years weren't legitimate tests for Mayweather at WW? Many people now are saying they knew all along that Floyd would beat Baldomir the way he did or that Floyd would beat Ricky the way he did, but they didn't at the time. In fact if you look back at the pre-fight ring magazine for Floyd against Baldomir a lot of the magazines thought it was either going to be a close tough fight for Floyd or that Carlos would win because he was too big and he had already beaten Zab, who's athleticism, gave Floyd some troubles.

Now you're changing the criteria for your argument. I would say Baldomir and Zab were legit WW challenges moreso over Pacquiao, if anything.

You may be right on that point. Pac beat Cotto who beat Zab though. But, there is no way to tell.

That wasn't what you said at first. You said Pac would have been Floyd's first legit WW challenge. Then you moved on to legit welters that Pac has fought. You're absolutely right, though. If Pac does fight Clottey he will have fought more legit WWs than Floyd. But if Floyd and Pac get it on Pac still isn't a legit WW. At least in my book.

Fair enough. I stand corrected. My main point is what you addressed in this post. Pac may be better at 140, but he has done pretty well so far at 147 and if he beats Clottey, very well.

It seems while Top Rank are trying to get this done, Golden Boy & Mayweather's team are still trying to save the fight.
Pacquiao moving on, Mayweather still wants fight - Boxing - Yahoo! Sports
Why do I get the feeling that Arum is once again trying to keep things all in-house?

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
Breaking News!
Dan Rafael
(5:02 PM)
That was Vinny Scolpino, Josh Clottey's manager. He told me he and Bob talked money in the last hour or two and they have agreed on their end of the fight. He said Clottey was ecstatic and will be returning to the US from Ghana on Monday. Nothing signed yet, not official but their side is in.
Tony (Toronto)
Appernetly, Pacquiao - Clottey is to be in Cowboy stadium. lmao. Whats your take on that?
Dan Rafael (4:50 PM)
That is possible, which I wrote. It would be configured for about 40,000.
Dan Rafael (5:15 PM)
More breaking news Freaks.
Dan Rafael (5:15 PM)
Another sign Pac-Clottey is for real: I heard from a PPV industry source that Top Rank has officially offered the fight out the PPV nets, which means this is real.

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
I seriously doubt this fight will happen, I mean come on they are willing to take on Clottey who in his last fight didn't he come in close to 170# after rehydrating, but they won't fight Yuri Foreman for an 8th title? The only fight that should be made is with Floyd.
I call bullshit here

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
I really hope Joshua asks Pac for the same random blood tests but I am not so sure if any guy out there who has never made a big fat check in any fight would be tempted to loose that opportunity :( . Pac once again will look spectacular and we'll have to listen to Freddy Roach, Bob Arum, Pac Team, and Pac, talk about how great they are and everybody wants to avoid fighting him blah blah blah.

Honestly I think Clottey doesn't care. It would be wise to do but he probably won't. However I hope he does. If each fighter Pacquiao tries to fight makes him do random drug tests it will freeze him out of any big money fight until he agrees to one. I say all fighters should beg this of Pacquiao until he does it and if he doesn't then he won't fight.

Oh man! I really hope EVERYBODY out there demands Pac for random blood tests but if Joshua is on his way out and this can be his biggest paycheck before he retires then I am not sure if he will demand Pac for any blood tests while Team Pac will fine him a ridiculous amount of money if he comes into the fight more black, wearing certain colors on his shorts that bother Manny, and so on. Risking a bad loss against a juiced up druggie, seems something a sellout would do. Please Joshua, ask for random blood tests. Even if Pac came in clean vs Clottey, I can't see Joshua winning though but at least it would be fair.
-
Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
Clottey won't give a shit, he's going to get a massive payday. You can guarantee he won't say a thing about steroids. Will the public still be enthused over watching a guy under suspicion for being a fraud fighting somebody who lost to the last guy Manny beat? I hope this promotion falls flat on its face and the public turn against Pacneedle, that's the only way we'll ever get him in the ring with Mayweather. He'll probably just fight a couple of people like Clottey and retire.
-
Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
I really think Pacquiao will lose some of his cred with the stunts in the build up here, because to reject blood testing for drugs is to open himself up for all kinds of allegations of things to hide. Blood testing isn't going to take much of his time nor his blood, so what has he got to lose.
Pacquiao has beaten a lot of the other big fighters, but when it comes to the massive one he goes and squanders it with this debacle, and gets a fight against a guy who's nowhere near his level.
-
Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
I have no doubt Clottey was handpicked because of his low output. Clottey is a definite upper level guy at welter, BUT this is at the expense of fighting the biggest fight and the biggest purse possible in our generation.
F&CK Pacquiao, Roach and Arum for taking that fight away from me.
And F#CK Roach a second time for recommending Khan vacate to duck Maidana.
Clottey would have been a great option if The superfight of the decade wasn't the alternative.
blah, blah, blah it's Mayweather's fault for wanting to make sure everything is clean and on the level.
I'm pissed off big time, good for Clottey he deserves the payday, I'm hoping he flattens Pac in 1.

I would love to see Clottey horribly beat Manny Pacquiao around the ring for 11 1/2 rounds before finally knocking him completely unconscious and attacking Freddy Roach with a stool.

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
In my point of view Clottey or even Foreman are too much for Pac
Clottey is solid welters as what id seen on what he done to Margarito and Cotto.
Even I really dont like this friggin fight. People want to see Floyd-Pac
but i guess Pac has the balls to take this kind of risky fight.
I dont even see Pac could win this fight.

Interesting to know what Pac will be doing for this fight on the drug testing?

theres no way clottey will risk throwing this chance away by requesting any testing, arum of course knows this

Agreed but it will be interesting what pac does regarding the drug test, he will always be tainted now by this and his fights just do not have the same meaning, a bit like any Margarito fight.

I think that Pac-Clottey is a decent fight but I won't be watching it. It's pretty obvious that something is up with Manny. There's just way too many red flags. I'm not gonna be fooled again giving people the benefit of the doubt like I did baseball players. It will be a fight because Clottey is tough but Manny will be too fast and strong for him. Manny will most likely fight Clottey, then maybe Tim Bradley or one of the guys at 140, then maybe Valero, then probably call it quits. We probably won't find out the real truth behind Manny until later. All those guys that hang around Manny know what's up and he better pray his money doesn't dry out or people are gonna be selling their stories left and right.

Would be funny as hell if both Manny and Floyd got KO'd by their new opponents in their next fights.

Re: Looks like it's Pac v Clottey on 13/03/10
I haven't really been following the whole Manny Pacquiao, steroid circus so i'd rather avoid that. As for this actual fight i don't believe this fight will happen, Joshua Clottey is far too big. I mean in one fight didn't he almost weigh close to 170 ?
He's also far too much of a risk with little reward, only amongst hardcore boxing fans would Manny Pacquiao get credit. Normal average joe fans wouldn't of heard of Joshua Clottey.
So i really doubt Manny Pacquiao's team will take this fight, style wise Manny Pacquiao should win, because Joshua Clottey goes into too much of shell. And he never seems to take that extra step to become a truly elite fighter.
But you never know Joshua Clottey is a big guy, with very good countering abilities and a good defense. And even though his KO ratio isn't great, i still think he can hurt Manny Pacquiao.
But as i said i doubt it happens, although it would be very impressive if it did happen and full credit to Manny Pacquiao if he does indeed take the fight.
Im a Floyd Mayweather Jr fan, but if its true that Floyd Mayweather is taking on Matthew Hatton, then i will lose some respect for Floyd Mayweather Jr, why the hell would he want that fight ?
He already got the ring rust off against a fighter x4 better than Matthew Hatton, Matthew Hatton is a good journeyman fighter at best. Who hasn't even really got a big following, even though he's Ricky Hatton brother.
Why not take on the Berto/Mosley winner ? why waste the fans time with this rubbish ?

well the fight weight was 149 and he weighed in fully clothed with a coat, jeans etc so not easy to tell what he really weighed
i agree with everything else, odd choice of fight for pac, big big risk.... and if he beats clottey alot will think 'so what, clottey was already beat by cotto ... it means nothing'

Its not really an add choice at all. He is fighting the best available Top Rank fighter. His next opponent was always gonna be Top Rank because they wont ask for drug tests.

he has nothing to gain from clottey, a man who lost his last fight and adds nothing to his legacy
yuri foreman is a possible world title at an 8th weight, i think its an easier fight for him to win also
