FIGHTHYPE \\ PAVLIK VS. MARTINEZ SET FOR APRIL
Printable View
I hope this turns true. I will give Pavlik some credit for taking on a slick southpaw who is very capable of outboxing him.
That sounds like a tasty matchup, but I thought Martinez had said he is staying at 154 to keep his title?
I think Pavlik has enough to beat Martinez and possibly bust him up. Pavlik has become somewhat underrated. I really feel that the Hopkins fight was largely down to Pavlik being way over his optimum fighting weight and being unwell.
Will be a great test for Pavlik. I'm a Kelly fan first, but a recent Martinez fan also so this will be interesting to watch. A bit tough too, because I feel Martinez had flown under the radar and not gotten fair judging on a few occasions. I like the guy, so whoever walks away with the win I'll be happy for so long as it is the correct decision.
Shouldn't Pavlik be fighting Williams after all he did beat Martinez?
It seems fighthype jumped the gun.
Vindy.com Local News Youngstown, Warren, Columbiana Ohio - news, sports and information - Pavlik-Martinez fight in April? Not so fast.
Don't believe the (Fight)Hype, Kelly Pavlik does not have a deal in place to fight Sergio Martinez in April.
At least not yet.
"We're discussing several fights," said Pavlik's co-manager, Cameron Dunkin, when asked about a report on the Web site FightHype that the fighters have agreed to terms for an April bout. "That's just one of them."
Added Top Rank spokesman, "That's the first I've heard of it."
Dunkin and Top Rank officials are planning to meet with HBO representatives next weekend in New York to discuss Pavlik's future, which could include an April fight. There are four finalists to fight Pavlik: Martinez, Anthony Mundine, WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and one other that hasn't been named yet.
Paul Williams, who was scheduled to fight Pavlik on Dec. 5, does not appear to be among the finalists. After agreeing to fight Pavlik for $1.2 million in December, Williams now wants to split the proceeds 50-50. Pavlik's handlers have refused. Williams earned a majority decision win over Martinez on Dec. 5.
"That's not happening," Dunkin said.

Nice, I actually think Martinez could win this one..He will be at a size disadvantage but he has great lateral movement which would give Pavlik fits
Wouldn't mind seeing this
This fight ain't gonna happen. Pavlik should be hitting the sauce right about now and soon he will punch his fist through yet another plate glass window and he will be penciling in opponents until the end of the year until Alfonso Gomez is ready to move up to 160 ;D
Pavlik wont win, you got a guy like Martinez who has electric handspeed and quick movement against a plodding 1-2 guy who has to set his feet to punch, when moving he pushes his punches awfully.. I can see a UD for Martinez, KP always has a punchers chance but like Chaos said he is singing Danny boy about now 3 sheets to the wind in some dive bar in youngstown
I know it ain't guna happen and I kno this won't be a popular post on here but I hope Mundine get's his shot. I know how most feel about him but I'd love to see him get his shot at a world class oponnent so we can really gage where his is at not only at middleweight but also on the world stage.
Taken into account the size difference I still think Martinez has all the tools to beat Pavlik in Hopkins fashion if he stays on point.Much rather see Pavlik Williams though.Pavlike better hurry and grab a biggie, blueprints out on him big time.
Very interesting fight.
I think Martinez was robbed against Paul Williams; GREAT fight, crap decision.
Williams kept coming ahead, but it was ineffective aggression and he made no adjustments. The clean effective shots were by Da Sex.
Williams still took a few rds, but it was clearly Martinez' fight.
I didn't think it was close. Williams was definitely in the fight, but he wasn't winning many rds.
I like Pavlik too, but I think Martinez is gonna be too slick for him with the counter-punching, the speed, the ability to make adjustments, and that he's not...welll....I hate to say it, but Pavlik knows only one way to fight whereas Martinez can change gears. Not 1-dimensional.
Martinex by decision...unless he gets ripped off again on the cards.
:D
I think Martinez is a much harder fight for Pavlik than Paul Williams would have been. Williams is much more hittable plus he's a volume puncher.
Pavlik has a great chin, Williams ain't putting him down, and I think Pavlik would have Williams eyes swelling badly by rd 4.
.
Seriously, Pavlik receives more hate than probably any other top fighter aside from Mayweather and Pacquiao, which is a little odd because he seems to be a sincerely friendly guy. We all drink and do things that are regrettable especially in dive bars :) . Maybe after Pavlik fights another legit opponent and wins, he'll move back into people's good graces?
Martinez does seem to be a bad style matchup for Pavlik. Pavlik has beat faster fighters before because of his strength and relentlessness, but Martinez moves well and more than anyone else Pavlik has fought, Martinez has the ability to adjust in fights. Also, in the Williams fight Martinez showed that he counters very well.
I think Martinez may be a tougher style matchup for Pavlik than Williams. Williams doesn't move like Martinez and isn't as fast. Martinez won't be there to hit like Williams.
Althugz, I'm not so sure Martinez will be a size disadvantage. His best weight may be 154, but he fought well at 160 against Williams who is around the same size (and longer) than Pavlik without the time usually necessary to prepare for moving up in weight although I think Martinez would have won if the fight had been at 154. What I'm trying to say say is that Martinez seems to be best at 154, but he is very close to his best at 160.
Either way, Martinez is one of the best at around that weight. No doubt about it. Who else is there? Sturm and Williams really.
I think a 50-50 split with Williams would be fair. Kelly is the bigger name still, but Williams has been the one who has been active and actively seeking this fight. I think ppl would have equal interest in seeing Paul. At any rate, this would be more fodder for The Punisher to state how avoided he is.
I think Hopkins exposed some serious leaks in Pavlik's defense and I think Martinez's electric speed and movement makes him a stylistic nightmare for Pav.
Props to Pav for taking this one on and is willing to test himself against the best, but I would go for Martinez taking this one on points.

YOUNGSTOWN — With Paul Williams pricing himself out of a possible middleweight title fight with Kelly Pavlik, the door has been opened for Sergio Martinez.
But it’s not yet an open-and-shut deal.
Martinez, who lost a majority decision to Williams last month, is the front-runner out of four finalists to meet Pavlik in a possible April or May bout on HBO.
Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, president Todd duBoef and Pavlik’s co-manager Cameron Dunkin will meet with HBO officials next week in New York to discuss Pavlik’s future.
Possible opponents include Martinez, Anthony Mundine, WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and a fourth possibility that Top Rank is keeping under wraps for now, Dunkin said.
Williams, who was scheduled to fight Pavlik on Dec. 5, does not appear to be among the finalists. After agreeing to fight Pavlik for $1.2 million in December, he now wants to split the proceeds 50-50. Pavlik’s handlers have refused.
“That’s not happening,” Dunkin said.
Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KOs) served as an injury replacement for Pavlik when he had to cancel his Dec. 5 bout with Williams due to a left hand injury. The bout became a “Fight of the Year” candidate with some observers (including Pavlik’s camp) believing Martinez did enough to win.
Pavlik’s preference is to fight Williams, but the 50-50 demand and the bad blood between the two camps makes the fight unlikely for now.
After dropping the puck for the ceremonial faceoff before Saturday’s Phantoms game at the Covelli Centre, Pavlik dropped the name of the possible fourth contender.
“And we’re looking at a fight over in England against a guy by the name of [Brian] Rose,” Pavlik said.
Rose is a light middleweight who is 14-0-1.
“Right now, everything is up in the air and we’re hoping to find out within a week,” said Pavlik. “The quicker the better. The faster we find out the better so we can start preparing for the fight, take care of training, get some sparring partners in.”
Pavlik said the ideal fight date would be late March or early April.
“At the latest, the end of April but I don’t want to go any longer than that.”
Pavlik said he’s willing to fight Williams, but doesn’t think it’s likely.
“We’re hoping,” said Pavlik of a Williams bout,” but for some reason he doesn’t want to take the fight. We’re trying everything. He outpriced himself again for this fight so ... if by some chance we can come to an agreement, I’d like to fight with him. Right now, for me, Sergio Martinez is a better fight. In the last fight, I thought Martinez beat Paul Williams.”
Arum believed he had a deal in place with Williams’ adviser, Al Haymon, on several occasions in the summer of 2008. The deal broke down when Haymon kept increasing his demands (from $750,000 with perks to $1.5 million), prompting Top Rank to arrange a Pavlik-Bernard Hopkins fight instead, Dunkin said.
Pavlik (36-1, 32 KOs) lost that fight by unanimous decision, although he retained the titles since the bout was held at 170 pounds.
Then, last fall, Pavlik twice postponed a Williams bout (first in October, then in December) due to the hand injury, prompting the Williams camp to accuse Pavlik of exaggerating his injury because he was scared to fight Williams. Pavlik’s camp, in turn, accused Williams of only arranging the fight because he knew Pavlik was banged up.
“They never wanted to fight Kelly,” Dunkin said. “I think the kid [Williams] does. I think his trainer does. But I don’t think [Al] Haymon and [promoter Dan] Goossen does.”
After Pavlik knocked out Miguel Espino on Dec. 15 to defend his title, Arum approached Williams’ handlers with the same offer they made last fall, with Williams getting $1.2 million. Williams’ camp came back with the 50-50 demand.
“Until they change that, it’ll never happen,” said Dunkin.
One Web site reported Pavlik’s camp has agreed to a deal with Martinez, but those reports are premature, according to Dunkin, Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels and Pavlik’s trainer, Jack Loew.
“It looks like they’re pushing the Martinez fight,” Loew said.
The 34-year-old Martinez, who hails from Argentina and now lives in Spain, suffered his only other loss to Antonio Margarito in February of 2000. He’s known as a speedy left-hander with decent power and good boxing skill.
Williams (38-1, 27 KOs), who lives in Augusta, Ga., is more of a slugger than Martinez, although he also has good boxing ability.
