Which can be described as slick?
My personal defination is a fighter whom exudes smoothness, moves and connects efffortlessly and has an excellent defence. The old science of hit without being hit. A fighter that all the above comes naturally, nothing they do seems forced, everything flows, slick. Mayweather, Guzman, Mosley are 3 for starters that I consider modern day slicksters.
Yeah Floyd and Guzman (although he wasn't so slick the last fight) are fighters I would consider the epitome of slick.
What about the guys I listed?
Is Hopkins slick?
I guess they'd be:
* Elusive
* Not erratic/ Composed
* Technically sound
* A bit of a dick
;D
** Edit **
So in answer to your question Fen, yeah Hopkins is slick.
Same really as Jimmy mentioned, as for Hopkins, personally no. He is awkward, but not slick, he leaves himself in the pocket for his opponent to miss then counter with a headbutt or shoulder butt for example, maybe the odd punch, but imo he is plain dirty rather than slick.
I would place Lennox lewis in that mould of slick, rarely did he look troubled and most things he done looked effortless. Slick is getting in to range/ the pocket get ya shots off then get out without taking damage, Lewis opitomised this for me above all else, bar Mayweather.
Sergio Martinez is a slick fighter.
ALso, usually slick fighters have very good reflexes.
Oi namesake! ;D
Isn't 'cute' just a variation of 'slick'?
(now i'm getting technical!)
OK so we've had Martinez and Pepp named.
How about some other non-black fighters?
Collazo ???
Calvin Grove.
Perrnell Whittaker.
Herol Graham.
Ray Leonard.
Ray Robinson.
in his prime you couldnt hit SWEATPEA with a handful of gravel.
My definition of slick is a guy that's able to avoid punches and land his own. Plain and simple... Floyd is a perfect example of a current "slick" fighter... But here are a few that come to mind.
Ezzard Charles was a slick guy. Best shoulder rolls I've ever seen.
Floyd is a very slick fighter.
Roy could get in and out using his reflexes alone... Very slick
Pea was very slick... Hard to hit.
Hector Camacho...
Ray Leonard...
Sergio Martinez...
Joe Calzaghe...
Andre Ward...
Hell, Ali was slick for a HW. You won't here that too often at HW.
Kid Thunder is he slick ? or a human punch catcher ?
I wouldn't credit any fighter who displays any kind of nervous energy or any anything remotely herky-jerky as 'slick'.
Paulie Malignaggi, guess ya could put him in the Slickster gang as a whitey
Define your meaning of awkward because i personally feel "awkward" fighters are like Ricardo Mayorga, Emmanuel Augustus, etc.
Hopkins is not "awkward"
The check list for being a slick fighter imo is:
Good footwork/movement
Elusive/defensively sound
good counter puncher
Hopkins gets a tick in all those catergories.
Hopkins is dirty, but no where near as bad as you make out. The guy has a excellent right hand and his left hook is sneaky and accurate also. He score points with those, Not headbutts and shoulders. :)
I was wondering when ya would pick up my Hopkins bashing, evaluation - My definition of awkward in relation to Hopkins ; hard to deal with, difficult to handle or manage, causing inconvenience. This for me is not slick. Listen mate he should have been DQ'ed against Calzaghe for the consistant fouling he done, he is a dirty boxer and he takes it to the limit and beyond. It makes me laugh when Hatton gets slated for wrestling and holding, when Hopkins is the opitomy of this.
I appreciate he is YOUR hero and fave boxer, but hey thats my take on him and my opinion on his style ;)
As someone brought it up, I can't remember when was the last time I saw a slick non-black boxer. It's pretty much like an white NFL running back, I don't think I've ever seen one in modern times.;D
I now see what you mean by Hopkins being awkward. I think Mayweather and other slick fighters belongs in a similar catergory also because they have a similar effect on his opponents. I personally feel all slick fighters have a awkwardness about them because they tend to move well and are tough to hit which is frustrating for alot of boxers.
I disagree on the Calzaghe fight. Hopkins has been alot more dirty than that in his career (Look at his second fight with Elchols) and to be fair, Calzaghe did his fair share of rabbit punches and low blows on the inside. Hopkins wasn't all to blame when it came to fighting dirty in that fight.
As far as Hopkins and Hatton are concerned, Hopkins has a excuse for hitting and holding. He is old, really old in boxing years. Holding was never part of Hopkins game in his younger days and his prime.
Hatton doesn't have that excuse.
Hopkins is definitely slick. the prime Hopkins that is.
Sergio Martinez defitely is not slick. he's there to be hit.
top 3 slicksters of the decade:
1) Floyd
2) Hopkins
3) Mijares
It's a good question but I would not agree at all that only black fighters can be classified as 'slick', that's ridiculous. Also, there are different types of slick fighters. Some fighters can be slick because they blend good defense and good counterpunching to be slick, others are slick moving forward, others are slick punchers, it can be applied to many things.
Slick, crafty, saavy, smart; all of those words are interchangeable to a certain extent. I believe what you are looking for here is the exact meaning of the word, right?
Think it meshes into what ones taste is.I always blur the line when it comes to 'slick' as you also have a number of 'cuties' or just flat out cagey-Wiley fighters.I think Toney as 'slick' in a different fashion but footwork defies what many think as slick...more cagey but dare say his upper body shifts, feints and slips are/were on par with many top 'slicksters' ever.Slick = quick footwork for me combined with equally fluid output...stick and move...placement and anticipating the next move or two upon executing the very first.Think combination punching but with feet ???
Virgil hill pretty smooth...Mark Johnson when not trading could be very slick...Byrd...Ray olivera...shit,good topic
Taking the bate...Bones Adams in top form (vs Nestor Garza) was a slick boxing fool)....Yuri Foreman ???
I just think of it as good skills with an emphasis on defensive skills. So yeah Hopkins is an obvious one, Floyd, etc. But its one of those terms that means different things to different people I guess.
This. There are a fair few non-black fighters who could be considered slick like Paulie Malignaggi, Paul Spadafora and Sergio Martinez to a point, unless we're now going to count anyone who isn't anglo-saxon as black :p
I think the best active examples would be Floyd, Hopkins, Chad Dawson, Eddie Chambers and Ivan Calderon, as well as some of those mentioned above just to bump up the affirmative action for paler skinned brothers.
Could u have clled Naz slick, or was he just too weird?
Naz wasn't slick. he had a terrible defense.
Chris Byrd and Muhammad Ali for the heavyweights
Nicolino Locche

I wouldn't call Hopkins slick....maybe out of the group you gave us but I'd describe him more as "cagey". His defense isn't GREAT and neither is his offense but he knows what he is doing and can set traps and make another fighter have trouble on offense and defense.
No, not the exact meaning, I knew full well people would have different definitions of slick.
Hopkins said something after the Pavlik fight about "black slick fighters" (he might have been misquoted, I can't find the exact quote). Yet as this thread shows some people wouldn't even class Hopkins himself as slick. And of course non-black fighters have been mentioned.
I'm certain the more obvious ones have been mentioned but here's mine...
Slick for me:
Benitez
Loi
Canto
Roman
Pernell
LaBarba
Locche
Lopez
Too Sharp
Napoles
James
Byrd
Pep
