    Default "Slick" Fighters?

    What exactly does slick mean?

    Hopkins?
    Taylor? (Jermain)
    Mosley?
    Miranda?

    Which can be described as slick?

    My personal defination is a fighter whom exudes smoothness, moves and connects efffortlessly and has an excellent defence. The old science of hit without being hit. A fighter that all the above comes naturally, nothing they do seems forced, everything flows, slick. Mayweather, Guzman, Mosley are 3 for starters that I consider modern day slicksters.
    Some people say boxing is a matter of life or death, it's not, it's far more important than that.

    Yeah Floyd and Guzman (although he wasn't so slick the last fight) are fighters I would consider the epitome of slick.

    What about the guys I listed?

    Is Hopkins slick?

    Same really as Jimmy mentioned, as for Hopkins, personally no. He is awkward, but not slick, he leaves himself in the pocket for his opponent to miss then counter with a headbutt or shoulder butt for example, maybe the odd punch, but imo he is plain dirty rather than slick.

    I would place Lennox lewis in that mould of slick, rarely did he look troubled and most things he done looked effortless. Slick is getting in to range/ the pocket get ya shots off then get out without taking damage, Lewis opitomised this for me above all else, bar Mayweather.

    Define your meaning of awkward because i personally feel "awkward" fighters are like Ricardo Mayorga, Emmanuel Augustus,etc.

    Hopkins is not "awkward"

    The check list for being a slick fighter imo is:

    Good footwork/movement
    Elusive/defensively sound
    good counter puncher

    Hopkins gets a tick in all those catergories.

    Hopkins is dirty, but no where near as bad as you make out. The guy has a excellent right hand and his left hook is sneaky and accurate also. He score points with those, Not headbutts and shoulders.

    I was wondering when ya would pick up my Hopkins bashing, evaluation - My definition of awkward in relation to Hopkins ; hard to deal with, difficult to handle or manage, causing inconvenience. This for me is not slick. Listen mate he should have been DQ'ed against Calzaghe for the consistant fouling he done, he is a dirty boxer and he takes it to the limit and beyond. It makes me laugh when Hatton gets slated for wrestling and holding, when Hopkins is the opitomy of this.

    I appreciate he is YOUR hero and fave boxer, but hey thats my take on him and my opinion on his style

    I'd say more 'cute' than slick personally, and I dont mean his looks.

    Sweat-Pea, Willy Pepp are as slick as they ever come. RJJ and Meldrick Taylor you can also add to the list. Micheal Nunn was pretty slick at his peak.

    Oi namesake!

    Isn't 'cute' just a variation of 'slick'?

    OK so we've had Martinez and Pepp named.

    How about some other non-black fighters?

    I wouldn't call Hopkins slick....maybe out of the group you gave us but I'd describe him more as "cagey". His defense isn't GREAT and neither is his offense but he knows what he is doing and can set traps and make another fighter have trouble on offense and defense.

    I guess they'd be:

    * Elusive
    * Not erratic/ Composed
    * Technically sound
    * A bit of a dick

    ** Edit **
    So in answer to your question Fen, yeah Hopkins is slick.

    Hopkins is slick by opposition. By that I mean he makes the other guy look clunky. I don't know if I would put him next to a Mayweather and describe them with the same word.

    Sergio Martinez is slick.

    I think a fighter like Pernell Whitaker, best describes what a slick fighter is.

    Sergio Martinez is a slick fighter.

    ALso, usually slick fighters have very good reflexes.
