Joke if you ask me imagine Toney against Lesnar :o It would be over in under 30 seconds.

He must be, he cant seem to get a top fighter in boxing to fight him, so maybe he has had enough and want's to fight in the Ufc. There gonna have to match him carefully if they want to build him up, I would have my money on any half decent mma fighter to destroy Toney.
Or maybe Dana White is just getting scared as Toney has been stalking him for the best part of a year. :p

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
Put him in against Kimbo.

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
Why does everyone just assume a good boxer gets destroyed in MMA? Now I know Toney doesn't have the exact same skillset but they start the fights standing up and not on the ground. Standing up, he instantly has to have some of the best stand up in MMA right?

I no what your saying Amat, but how is he going to deal with a big heavyweight taking him to the ground?? I can't see a fat unskilled mma fighter like Toney having any sort of take down defence.

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
Dear Dana White,
We wish to inform you that one Mr. James Toney in his most recent bouts was outboxed by Sam Peter and Fres Oquendo, please notate that when trying to sell him as a still relevant boxer.
Best Regards,
The Boxing Community.

As Kimbo is mainly a stand up fighter too it would have to give 'Lights Out' a better chance. As long as he is matched up against all stand up guys he'd be ok.

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
This is really, really sad news.
I suppose I really no longer have even the slightest interest in James Toney then. He was one of my favourite fighters, but UFC? Sorry, I just can't stoop that low. He's officially done.

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
Does anyone know if this is even true?

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
He's going to show up fat, cocky, and talking a ton of shit. He'll also get stopped within a round by anyone half decent, which is going to suck because some MMA fans are going to use it to deride boxing (as would some boxing fans if the situation was reversed).

Actually Kimbo has grown into an MMA fighter and vastly improved his game...He is not the same fighter from the TUF series or even the one that faced Alexander....He really has developed nicely...Not the best but not the worst either....
As for the pressers Kimbo is really not a big shit talker...In truth he is a humble guy who is great to talk to and very respectful...Believe it or not he is an intelligent guy as well...I met him at ATT in Coconut Creek last year top caliber fellow

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
Walker is in his 40's and has had multiple martial arts black belts, but Dana says that that guy is a joke. Then signs this 40-something former pro to make an MMA debut?
and furthermore......
Personally I’m more intrigued to see Ricardo Mayorga in Shine against Din Thomas.
Mayorga is closer to his prime, and he is stepping in against a legit badass in his first fight. Toney is sure to get a hand picked tomato can similar to Herschel Walker’s.

Mayorga against Thomas is great, I'm wondering who Toney will fight.
I think Couture said he wanted Toney.

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
I'll tell you exactly how this will go. Toney will be submitted extremely quickly and then in the post fight interview go off on his opponent for being a p#ssy for not standing and fighting.
-
Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
I'm actually quite intrigued to see how Toney performs in this. I listened to a really interesting interview with, I think his Step Father of about 15 - 16 years. He was a mixed martial arts expert for years fighting in all kinds off rough places. The link is below. I think James Toney might be a little better equipped for UFC than people are giving him credit for......

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
If ANYONE makes the mistake of trying to punch Toney in that gay MMA way then it will be a repeat of what Mercer did to Sylvia. They will be KO'd instantly only this time it will be a counter punch that does it. I know Toney isn't the biggest puncher but he has ok power.
On the other hand if they charge at him for a takedown, Toney does not have good footspeed anymore and will not be able to avoid that IMO and once on the floor he will be in trouble IMO.
This for me is Dana trying to prove a point but he knows he's picking an out of shape old has been middleweight because some bums from boxing in the past have crossed to MMA and done quite well. You have Butterbean for example he got easily outclassed by a 50 odd year old ex champion and then went to MMA and has beaten some decent names, the guy only ever fought one fight in boxing outside of 4 rounders for fuck sake. I once heard a MMA commentator say "there is a lot of talk of Floyd Mayweather coming into MMA, but we already have one top boxer here in Butterbean" WTF??
Then there is Lytle and Davis who are both ex bums in boxing who realised they weren't good enough so went into MMA, I know they are not the best in the UFC but to get into the UFC you have to be half decent at MMA. And then of course Mercer at 48 KO'd 33 year old ex 3 time UFC HW champion in 8 seconds, I know that one hurts MMA fans the most, now i'm not saying Mercer or Sylvia for that matter are great but he showed what an old, fat, out of shape boxer is capable of in MMA!!

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
complete joke
james toney is too fat and dumpy to get around a boxing ring nowadays how the hell is he gonna survive in an MMA one.
You could put him in with the greatest UFC heavyweight of all time and the story is pretty simple. If the heavyweight is stupid enough to even attempt at any point to trade toney will bang them out with one punch. Its simple economics a boxer will always be stronger than a wrestler. But the second one of them takes hold of his leg and starts getting gay with toney it`ll just be like watching an xrated version of flipper

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
This is awful news, I'm very disappointed in Dana. :(
Apart from Kimbo, I cant think of another Heavyweight or Light-Heavyweight within the UFC that isnt going to take Toney down and beat the shit out of him, put him to sleep or snap his leg or arm. Kimbo would be a joke match-up as well, he's a back-street brawler with limited MMA skills, who favours standing. Toney would murder him, their stand-up skillsets are obviously light years apart.
I really wish they wouldnt mix these two sports. They are both completely different ball games. I have always liked James Toney as a BOXER, as an MMA fighter it's just plain ridiculous. And Toney is completely naive if he thinks just because he has world class hands he can live with these multi-dimentional athletes.
The thing is, Dana has always been a huge boxing fan, I think he has sold out here again in the hope of using Toneys name to lift the name of the UFC. Cheap shot. And I'm a big Dana White fan.

The day vitali klitschko enters the ring in spandex shorts and starts dry humping his opponent is the very day i call time on watching this sport!!

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
I dunno man, yeah it's easy to say Toney's going to suck, but it all depends on how he trains, who trains him etc etc.
Toney fighting in UFC and doing alright for himself is just as rediculous as saying Mosely has a chance against Floyd.
you never fully know whats going to happen till they get in the ring and do it.
I'm going to reserve judgement....

no doubt white will put the spin on this and tell all that boxers are now joining the revolution completely ignoring the fact both guys peaked years ago
once they are inevitably both knocked out white will again claim victory in that it`ll somehow prove how martial arts is the superior sport:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

That's his plan! Otherwise he'd be trying to get someone with really good wheels who could circle away from all the takedowns and clinches and could fire lighning bolts everytime the opponent comes forward with that gay stance from the outside thus ending with the MMA guy unconcious. But no he'll just go for stand still and roll the shoulders James Toney. White is a tosser who pretends he like boxing, the guy doesn't even know Juan Manuel Marquez's name. How is that a boxing fan??

It kills me when UFC fans state how theyre sport is superior because you can work the legs etc
The sport is essentially full of guys who failed to make it as a boxer hence the reason they do this sport. What the fuck do you think would happen to brock lesnar if he ever got in the ring with a klitschko or if couture fought calzaghe.
Every single UFC fighter of note at some point has dreamed of being a boxer because this is still the millionaire making sport. If you offered mayweather, mosley, pacquiao $70,000 dollars for a fight they`d laugh at you in the face. Ive no probs with dana white trying to compete and lets face it he does a far superior job of promoting UFC than anything boxing can possibly offer.
But this whole mixed martial arts is the superior sport thing has got to stop. Just ask couture, silva etc if theyve ever tried to become a boxer and whether they honestly believe they could go toe to toe with a second or 3rd rate fighter and not get banged out within 20seconds

Lol, your ignorance holds no boundries.
For the record, an MMA fighter is a far more dangerous proposition to face than a boxer. These guys arent boxers, they are martial artists, and now multi-dimentional. Of course they dont have the striking abilities of boxers, but they can punch, they can kick, they wrestle, they can grapple, they can submit. They can basically kick ass in every area possible.
Go and Youtube Cain Valesquez's recent KO of Nogueria at UFC 110 and tell me that 3 punch combination wasnt beautifully tight, crisp and short. And this is from a guy who excels in wrestling and smashing your face in once he gets you to the ground. It was very impressive indeed.
-
Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
I'm yet to see any UFC fighter with anywhere close to half decent boxing skills.
It's not hard to look like a good puncher when you're Ko'ing a guy with with even worse skill.

If you swapped the pay of both sports and mixed martial artists were earning millions of dollars dont you think the likes of floyd mayweather and bernard hopkins wouldnt just jump over to that?
And if they did they would no doubt own every single division and once agan the white frat boys who cant take getting beat f*ck out of would simply devise ANOTHER contact sport that they could get their shoe in.
Tell floyd mayweather that randy couture is a better allround athlete. floyd wouldnt give 2 shits he`d merely compare both mens bank balances and that would be the end of the story. UFC fighters arent idiots, they all know they could potentially make millions in the sport of boxing but the difference being our sport is full to the brim with world quality operators wanting those million dollar paydays while UFC is an expanding franchise full of young untapped talent that simply played the numbers game and realised theyd be better keeping to a safe little payday fighting guys with 21-4 rather than compete in a sport with hundreds of world class athletes.
Randy Couture fights guys with records of 18-4, in boxing that record wouldnt even get you on the card as a filler fight let alone a main eventer!!

Ridiculous my friend ;)
UFC fighters start off with a base fighting style, wrestling, BJJ, Kickboxing, Sambo, Muay Thai etc, very few start off with a boxing background then make the transition to MMA. Simply because they didnt want to do boxing at the very start of their fighting careers. These guys want to be MMA artists because thats what they WANT to be, regardless of the money involved, they do it for the love of the sport. ;)

Re: James Toney signs multi fight deal with the UFC
I do like to watch a bit of UFC but I sometimes think Dana is in an odd world.....
He signs a guy in kimbo who is a glorified youtube streetfighter, and now he is snapping up boxers who are on the brink of bxing retirement.
Would an aging UFC fighter on the brink of retirement go to boxing. I doubt it.
The UFC has grown a lot over the years and I'm interested to see where it will go from here. I don't think ageing boxers and bums that have filmed themselves punching other bums on youtube is the answer.

Plain and simple exposure I'd say is the goal of White. If an ageing boxer or youtube hit streetfighter brings more audience figures then it makes Dana White money. Imagine how many people are gonna tune in to see how James Toney fairs in UFC. I can't stand the "Two guys grappling on the floor" thing at all. But saying that, I will certainly tune in to find out how Toney gets on, and Mayorga too....... He trying to win boxing fans for sure, and he's gonna do it. Still won't be as good a sport as boxing but might open a few eyes with regards to the supposed quality and entertainment value of UFC if Toney gets slammed.....
