How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
This is the best fighter with 13 losses we will see this era.....He has lost a lot of hometown decisions....Johnson has always been willing to fight anyone and is not a walkover for anyone...His title win came late and he really made some noise when he KO'd Jones the way he did....
In 20 years will he be talked about as the guy champions always had to look out for or be one of those fighters you forget about like he has been during much of his career....
Also is it me or does Johnson have one of the best chins in the sport...He has 1 KO loss 13 years ago by Hopkins
Hell I wish he would get a rematch with Hopkins..after the other night with Bernard's performance I see a loss at the hands of Johnson

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
Was he even knocked down in that fight? I thought it was stopped on cuts. I think a fight with B-Hop has to happen now.
-
Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
I hope Glenn still has some more good moments left in his career. He is unbelievable fighter for his age, and does not cherry pick opponents just takes on the best. Hope he has saved his money and is investing the money because he has had a hard career and earned his pay.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
I have nothing but good things to say about this guy... Great fighter and stands for everything right about boxing..
Good Thread!

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
He is far better than his record suggests. I also agree that he beats up this version of Hopkins. Since Jones he has really pushed himself, but it's a shame he was just so old before he really got that recognition.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
A very tough customer who fought anywhere against the bests and which achievements have been overshadowed by his humble personality and who lost a few times when he should have won.

Change "customer" to "competitor," and you have my thoughts on the matter. Definitely a GJ fan.

He wasn't down but he was taking a battering....Ref stopped it...Johnson never stopped trying but he was swinging missing etc......
Glad to know there are others guys out there who respect the career of Johnson like I do...Thanks for the replies all

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
I think he will be remembered the same way people remember Marlon Starling.
As a really good fighter who gave the best guys all they could handle but had some losses on his record.
Johnson is one of the hardest working and nicest guys in boxing. You gotta love him. He took the high road to becoming a world champion.
-
Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
IMO he'll be remembered similarly to Dwight Muhammad Qawi, two gritty fighters who although not the most gifted fighters, were as tough as they come and gave the best of their time hell, also two fighters who were a lot better than their records would indicate, both HOF's no doubt

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
I Glen summed it up himself when (I believe after the Jones fight) he said, "I'm not the best. I'm just the guy who's willing to fight the best." Of course, a lot of boxers might claim to be willing to fight the best, and they might even mean it. The difference is that Glen Johnson has been able to consistently perform at a high enough level to put him self in position to fight the best.
I kind of think he is similar to Larry Bird in the NBA. Bird had natural talent, but wasn't the most gifted athlete in the NBA. He achieved his greatness through an unparalleled commitment to practicing his craft. Glen is very similar, and is always the consummate professional.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
A Hall of Famer as far as I'm concerned. Probably won't be 1st ballot, but he should definitely get there. Although I'm always dubious about how Canastota works these things out when they let Barry McGuigan in there, but have yet to induct Genaro Hernandez or Lupe Pintor. But hopefully Johnson will get in there, he deserves it.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
Johnson is my number 3 favorite fighter after Jhonny Gonzalez and Hozumi Hasegawa.
I don't know how anyone could have anything except for extreme respect for him. Calzaghe wouldn't get in the ring with him, he fought everyone he could. He was the underdog in all his big fights and still had more "Rocky" moments than any other fighter I can think of in the modern era. I mean he has all the elements that you could want in a fight
1. He'll fight anyone.
2. He'll always be there to fight, not just for a check.
3. He's a nice guy, gives honest assessments of his performances.
4. He never stops pressing, he never stops trying to fight the best.
I mean what more could you want out of a pro? He defines the term "professional boxer" to me.

I can make a compromise to competitor because I think that the guy was genuinely one ;)

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
He has a great resume if nothing else.
Hopkins
Ottke
Gonzalez
Harding
Woods
Jones
Tarver
Griffin
Dawson.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
The almost guy...
Mostly remembered for his win over RJJ.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
I think Johnson is an overrated fighter.
His one big win, without which he's nothing, was against the worst version of Roy Jones that ever stepped in the ring.
He's a tough guy. He's good enough to hold his own in top class but doesn't have the ability to win against the very best - hence the hundred and one losses.
No sorry, I should say the hundred and one "robbery" losses (). When really it's a case of him not having the ability to dominate fighters.
He deserves respect for being a great opponent, he is not a great fighter though.
-
Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
sturdy and resilient come to mind when you think of glen johnson
I put him in the same category as carlos baldomir and joshua clottey. Great fighter who`s record didnt do him justice. But was always that level just behind a great fighter

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
The title of this thread reads like he died or something.

This of course has NOTHING to do with Calzaghe ducking him. Also was the Jones he fought really worse than the one JC, Green, B-Hop II fought. I really doubt that. Johnson has been fucked over a fair few times, but fair play he hasn't been able to dominate that many fighters. Maybe because he consistently tried to get in with the best out there.

Correct. Calzaghe ducking Johnson was the greatest thing that ever happened to him. Without that duck he wouldn't have landed the Roy fight.
Jones was already finished by time he fought JC, Green and KO'd Hopkins. That wasn't completely certain before the Johnson fight. Roy was shocking. He came back too soon after the KO loss.
And lots of journeymen consistently fight the best ;)

I don't think he's overrated mate, i don't personally think anyone on this board has ever said he's the best fighter in his division, or he's great or whatever. But he is a very good fighter.
Wins over.
Antonio Tarver
Clinton Woods
Eric Harding
Richard Hall
Montel Griffin
Yusaf Mack
Roy Jones Jr
Those are some pretty good wins, aswell as alot of close decision losses that could of gone his way.
But i agree that he's lost alot of close decisions, because he doesn't do any one thing. That great or he doesn't look spectacular when he's fighting. He's a workman like type fighter, and he never really turns it on, with great handspeed, or crushing power.

Plenty of people have called him great. He was also P4P ranked by The Ring after the Jones win.
It's cool, the done thing, for hardcore fans to love guys like Johnson. That's what I meant by overrated. Many a guy on here call genuine elite fighters overrated/bum but will rave about a limited tough guy like Johnson ;)

To be fair to Fenster, he was being ironic and I found it funny, there are a lot worse posts out there. He is also quitting a gambling problem. :)

No I wasn't being ironic. I am serious. My view on Johnson is he is overrated by hardcore fans. I am not saying Johnson is a shit cunt. Just he is not some great.

Re: How will Glen Johnson be remembered?
I sort of view him as a more fortunate Emmanuel Augustus ???
I mean, he got quite a few due chances in the end.... Without necessarily getting his dues... If that makes sense? :-\

Oh for sure at times mate...I just went from a thread where you said Augustas should be banned from boxing for the Vester fight, then Blaming Hopkins for the Ring ratings sucking.... Then the third post I had seen of yours was that of.. Johnson being over rated...
(though in truth I never really hear anyone talk about him one way or another which is why I posted the thread)
Sounded like you were angry at the sport....Though the 90% thing was a gross exaggeration...I was basing on things i read that day and your not even the most negative person on Saddo let alone the net...
As for me....I will be the first to say that when something just plain out stupid is said (Usually by a blinded fanboy).....I will go on the tirade....

Agree with Fenster, great opponent but not a great fighter. Deserves respect for being hard as nails and always giving a go, so prob put him above a Clottey who covered up against PAc effectively giving up.
Think he gets a lot of sympathy votes but in reality if you look at his record he's actually had a fair few opportunities, but his limitations meant he couldn't take most of them. Always felt, that while he was very consistent in his performances, he lacked that extra gear when the going got really tough to take the fight.

The Hopkins thing was a joke.. I thought that was obvious because I kept saying Roy KO'd him. My humor is a little confusing sometimes, even to me.
The Augustus thing I was serious about. Throwing a fight should be a life ban.

The Augustas thing I can agree to throwing a fight is just plain out wrong...Cheating is cheating.....
