I like him better as an announcer then a fighter....With the exception of the last fight card on Showtime where he just kept complaining that Lara was not going to be what he is hyped to because he did not stop Perez...I would take him over Lewis on HBO anyday

He does a great job. I actually like him better compared to guys like Jones Jr. and Lewis. Hell I say he should replace Max Kellermen for the HBO spot. Kellermen is going to take over when Merchant retires and does fill ins when Merchant isn't doing any broadcast, but Kellerman is straight horrible and annoying.
Yep he's pretty good. He just fitted in pretty seamlessly, he's the anti-Kellerman in a lot of respects.
Tarver is exceptional as a commentator and the whole Showtime team is better than HBO now. Lampley is shit anymore. He is supposed to be a blow by blow man and all he can get out is Bang !! Bang!!!. How about what punch was thrown Jim? Bob Papa is the best very unbiased and knows a good deal. I think he should replace Lampley ASAP. Then take Tarver over Lennox and keep Merchant until he dies. Now that would be a killer announcing squad.
Kellerman is just awful. As if that muppet is fit to even crawl at the feet of Larry Merchant. He is poor and especially bad in the post fight interviews. Kellerman needs to be given the boot. How do these people even get the jobs anyway? Where the heck did Kellerman come from?Quote:

I think he's a quite good commentator but he seems to get caught on things like a broken record sometimes. Never the less... He is good. I don't mind him at all. I think he's much better than some other fighters they tend to thow behind a mic. He actually is believable and even if he wasn't a fighter, you can take to him because he's pretty eloquent and follows the action well.
While we're on the subject... Can someone tell an exec at HBO that Lenox Lewis is an idiot?! Does Lewis have pictures of an HBO exec cheating on his wife or something?.. Cuz he is just bad! Great fighter... Horrible commentator.
I think Nate Campbell would be a good commentator as well.
I like Tarver better than Foreman and Lewis. Not quite up there with Roy yet.
I was telling my wife that just the other day too. Hes a very good commentator and speaker. Lennox lewis makes me wanna turn the volume down to mute.
Tarver is an excellent commentator. I think he is the best right now. You can't even tell he took punches for a living. Not to mention the guy is actually intelligent and educated. As a fighter Tarver spoke too much too soon and made himself too easy to dislike. As a commentator the guy is the real deal.
I don't think tarver is bad at all. It's funny to hear him tell everyone to do things he couldn't do in the ring himself, but he does have some nice wins on his record and above else actually has ring experience and isn't talking about things he doesn't really know first hand like most..

Tarver is great though, this must be what Denise Tarver saw in him. I love how he holds his fabricated smile on camera for extended lengths too.

I hate Flores... All acting like he'd fight Godfrey. That dude doesn't want to touch anyone near the top of the division and is content fighting fringe contenders. Well I'm content being uninterested in his "career".
Hes top notch and carries self very fluid,easy going but makes good points.Totally at ease on camera but does get a bit over the top smiley with a odd stutter laugh.He blows Lewis out of the water.Lewis is stiff,talks in random broken sentences and when he gets excited during a fight his statements sound more like questions....love his spats with Kellerman though.
Yes Tarver is a very good commentator. He comes off as knowledgable, unbias and a nice guy.
Much different from when he was fighting.
Honestly I think Al Bernstein is the best commentator in boxing today.
Also Joe Tessitore does a good job tho he does get easily excited. :splurt:
Tarver is great. Probably my favorite ex-fighter turned announcer.

Tarver is really good behind the mic, I've listened to him on a couple of Showtime broadcasts and he's only going to get better.
Showtime has better announcers than HBO, and better fights.

Tarver is excellent, it was always going to be a guy like that (brash, a shit-talker) who was going to make the best commentator because they've been practicing their whole career. Mark my words, it will be the likes of Campbell, Mayweather & Haye who make excellent announcers once their careers are done. Allegedly, the HBO announcing job was between Lennox & Michael Bennt, but they decided to go with Lennox even though Bennt was miles better because he was the big-name fighter & audiences might not know who Bennt was :-\
This is similar to Johnny Nelson who was shite to watch but a very good commentator.
