Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
From Dan Rafael of ESPN.COM/BOXING
"The pay-per-view, up against the Final Four and on Easter weekend, most likely tanked. Those I've talked to behind the scenes tell me it likely will do a little more than 100,000 buys. If that's the case, Jones won't make a dime because of the horrific deal structure he agreed to, one that gives the Hopkins side the first $3.5 million of revenue after expenses.
There may not be even a "first" $3.5 million, but at least Hopkins got a guarantee from Golden Boy of $750,000, which is the figure that was on his Nevada bout contract.
Jones' bout contract listed no purse because of the deal structure. It is maybe the single worst business deal I've ever seen a fighter make, other than when Hasim Rahman turned down something like $16 million and multiple guaranteed comeback fights from HBO for the Lennox Lewis rematch to instead sign with Don King -- and still wound up fighting a court-ordered rematch with Lewis for less money."

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
Fighting the urge to use a "ya musta forgot" joke here.
Jones would have been better off ducking out after the Green fight. Not only was he involved in the worst joke of a fight this year, but he's not even getting paid.

Damn that's sad for RJJ that he's not getting paid for that fight. Damn how the mighty have fallen.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
I'm surprised that a hundred-thousand people were dumb enough to actually pay for that abortion of a fight.

I would think that Hopkins will end up a few thousand more from the fight when dividends are passed out since he has a part interest in GBP as east coast managing partner.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
When you're likely to not get dough, you shouldn't fight. Roy should of have understood the message.

Confirms the old adage There's a sucker born everyday........
I don't think Jones needs the money....I remember always seeing odlh and rjj on list of highest paid athletes.....along with Shaq Kobe etc........up until the last few years he has been a smart business man

Because he INSIST!!!! He is a PPV worthy fighter....The only time RJJ was a PPV fighter was at SMW at his early LHW years...after that he became boring...too safe and fighting not the best he was able....
He would do better just taking a purse these days for sure....I could not believe Sheika and Lacy were PPV........Anyone know what those fights did?

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
It makes you wonder how he could have agreed to the deal in the first place. He's either delusional or he's in serious money trouble.

He is having money problems, because of all the money he blew financing his own rap career. He was forced to take this risky deal because after his loss to Green, the original deal went out the window. Roy obviously thought the fight would do better business so he took a risk.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
Quote:
"The sad thing about the fight is that Jones won’t make anything. Let’s assume for a second that the 6,792 in the building actually paid for their seats (we know that’s not true) and that the seats averaged $300 a ticket (a figure higher than reality). That would mean the gate was $2 million. If the expenses to rent the building and promote the fight were $1 million, that means $1 million is left. Now, let’s figure it sold 100,000 pay-per-views at $49.95 apiece. That’s about $5 million. They have to split 50 percent of that with the cable and satellite operators, so that leaves $2.498 million for themselves. Add the $1 million from the gate and the $2.498 million from the pay-per-view and you have $3.498 million in profit. Given that the contract called for the first $3.5 million in profit to go to Hopkins and Golden Boy, it’s almost certain Jones fought for nothing. Actual revenue will likely be far less than I’ve described above."

It seems it really is true that Roy got paid nothing.
yeah Hopkins really did fuk Roy over.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
I m surprised that a business man like Roy would put himself in that position.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
Damn, I loved both of these guys, but I'm SICK AND TIRED of them still being in the fight game. The same egos that gave them there drive to be the best are the same egos that are screwing the hell outta them now. I mean I understand that this is there only way to make money really, but damn, when Roy Jones Jr vs Bernard Hopkins doesn't even get 100,000 buys? That should tell you that NOBODY CARES anymore. Roy Jones got some bad advice on the purse. I think he looked at his fight with Felix (another fight where fans were like "Why?") and thought that if that fight could do 500,000 then this one should at least do 500,000. The problem is that NOBODY wants to see Hopkins fight and RJJ just got knocked out in a round. Plus, just from the feeling I got from my friends, I felt a general disgust that this fight was even taking place. Honestly, I was almost offended that I would have to pay for this fight to watch. I didn't buy it because it wasn't gonna be showcase of two legends, it felt like a heist. If RJJ doesn't get paid at all for his fight, that's a mockery of boxing in general and a disgrace. These old heads are fucking ruining everything.
What's even sadder is that I can see the same happening to Floyd, Shane, Pacquiao, etc...
These guys (especially Floyd) spend money as if this is a career, as if they will be making this type of money for their life like they were a doctor or engineer or something like that. With their entourages, and houses, and cars, and lavish lifestyles, etc...I really hope these guys don't end up like Hopkins and Jones.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
Roy jones got paid some money trust me. Maybe not the kind of deal he is used to putting together but hes been around to long not to get a dime.

and doctors and engineers do not have the extremly limited window of opportunity where they can make that money. They ussually can make it for the rest of their lives.

TBH I don't think FLoyd, Shane, and Pacquiao is going to be broke once their careers are over. Shane owns a minority interest in GBP and gets a small fee or whatever for helping to promote the fights also, Floyd had IRS troubles recently but I dont' think the guy is stupid enough to be in that situation again, he can still make more money in future bouts also. Pacquiao is the richest athlete in his country's history, plus factor in the rate of exchange and the extremely cheap cost of living in the philipines compared to western countries, and he isn't going to be broke in this lifetime, unless he moves to the US and decides to live that kind of lifestyle.
RJJ on the other hand from what I read could be in serious financial trouble, Hopkins on the other hand is frugal with his money and also owns a small part of GBP. He should be fine.

Just because the amount of time they are able to make money is shorter doesn't mean they shouldn't save a nest egg. It's common sense.

Boxing and common sense are frequently mutually exclusive concepts.

First thing I thought, man. Thats the first hint that boxing will never die. When you can sell 100,000 PPV buys of that TURKEY, then you know boxing has some LOYAL fans.
IT absolutely boggles my mind how someone who isn't filthy rich would decide to throw money away on this turkey. Absolutely terrible fight. Going into the fight, fans knew...
1) It had absolutely NO relevance.
2) It was likely to be boring, given the style of both guys and the fact that their first fight was one of the most boring fights you'll ever see
They should be thankful for 100,000 buys IMO.

Re: Hopkins vs Jones PPV numbers
A lot of boxers go broke for the same reason a lot of boxers get fat: trying to live the same lifestyle after boxing. Its human nature man, people hate change. Its hard to maintain a certain standard of living and then voluntarily decrease it to reflect your income.
