James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
Looks like this fight is going to happen at the end of August.
A good move by Dana White to get Tony in a big hight publisty match up straight away because to be honest Tony could easly lose to a novice MMA fighter.
Also Tony would stand a better chance against a striker as they are called in MMA as a posed to a wrestler which Couture is.
A very hard fight for Tony but it would be interesting to see what happens if he can land afew of his power shots.

would be hilarious if Toney KO's Couture, that said, i doubt it happens

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
Yeah, Toney's going to get his ass kicked. He'll just get taken down to the floor immediately and will be helpless there.

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
thing is even if Toney does win, it's a win win for White, if Couture wins it "proves" MMA is superior, if Toney wins it shows how much of an eye White has for "talent"

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
Is Randy still pretty capable then?

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
This is a more interesting fight than you guys think for several reasons; 1) Couture is getting up there in age 46 I believe. 2) Couture losses have been to strikers for the most part (or wrestlers who chose to strike) and Randy has been susceptible to the KO which works in Toney's favor.
Let's face it Toney would loss to a 3rd rate wrestler if taken to the ground so really any MMA fighter even a supposed "striker" knows more than Toney on the ground and NO "striker" will try to stand up with Toney. So with that logic, anyone he fights in MMA will try and take Toney to the ground and it only makes sense to put him up against an older wrestler that has been susceptible to the KO. I actually like this matchup for James Toney, just look how Chuck Lidell handled Randy Couture and I believe James Toney has a chance...
I also read that JT weighs over 250! If that's true forget the above....

White has given Tony a tough first fight in the UFC.
Tony would have a much better chance against a striker rather than a wrestler like couture.

Not really mate.. his last two fights have been an absolute gift of a decision in which he was dropped and hurt badly on several occasions, and the other he choked out a washed up Mark Coleman.. that said Toney is no spring chicken himself, but Toney has the best boxing in the heavyweight division as soon as he goes into the UFC, no doubt.. and I see Randy struggling to take him down. Will be a interesting fight no doubt.

Well Couture is quite literally the Bhop of MMA. His age was never a factor, as he is in better physical shape than 85% of the guys in MMA, and I doubt his age will be a factor in this.
Also, he was KO'd by Chuck Liddell (a guy with unbelievable takedown defense) because Randy had been working hard on his boxing and felt that he could outstrike Chuck as he did in their previous fight. I doubt he'll have any such illusions against Toney.
Bad matchup for Toney big time, Couture will go fight for the clinch, push him against the fence, and take him down. The only chance Toney has is to catch Couture with something while he's coming in for the clinch.

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
i wouldve liked to see james toney to fight chuck lidell instead, or someone else that has to much pride in their stand up to take toney down lol, thers no way toney will learn enough to defend a take down from someone as good a wrestler as randy couture, but i can only imagine how dangerous james hands wil be, its scary to put a REAL boxer in the ufc

Doubt it, Toney weighed 217 for his last fight, apparently he has been under 210 recently as well.

Next tom brady will try and beat tiger at golf......and i won't care about that either. I love love james toney but damn you can't beat sam peter now you want to take on an mma fighter at his sport ??!! Toney will get his ass kicked, but why is that a surprise he's probabably not a good kick boxer either but because the sports are similar he should be ???

Exactly!!
Toney will be dangerous as long as he avoids the takedown and with Toneys timing he could easily step back and use the uppercut to KO ANYONE who comes rushing in with their head down the way they do in MMA.
Both though are old men but at least Randy has kept himself in shape and is a genuine 205-220lbs fighter and not a fat blown up 160-168lbs fighter. There is no age advantage in this, they are oth too old to be fighting as professional fighters IMO but Randy has not fought anywhere near as many times as Toney and that for me makes Toney the more ring worn.

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
Thinking of this as a typical mma fight, I see Toney getting rugby tackled to the floor and thats it, same as i see for Mayorga, or any other boxer.
On the other hand, I can see why Toney and Mayorga are so confident because I boxed amature 18 fights, I also spared with some local BJJ boys that were trained by Braulio Estima and before I boxed i did freestyl;e karate for a couple of years.
I have to say that boxing gives you the most confidence fight wise, you know you can take or avoid a shot, you have composure under pressure and dont panick and go in to the fetal position like Tito Ortiz and you know, your punches can do damage and if not knockout single punches, you still know they are enough to make your opponent very wary of engaging after even just one stiff shot because theyve never been hit as easily before because theyve never truly cross trained before. Only a very small minority of mma fighters bother to spar with decen boxers, those that have, do have much better striking ability, those thjat havent seem to shiit a brick when anyone can string together more than one meaningfull shot.
Mayorga may get taught a lesson but lets be honest, Myorga has only taken this fight for the cash, its only because of Mayorga that anyone is interested. Mayorga could sub withing 10 seconds and still will earn more than Thomas for this fight.
If Thomas does decide to try his luck, testing his boxing then Mayorga will run through him! Watch the first round of Mayorga v Vargas, mayorga is similarly out of shape but throws everything at vargas, vargas keeps his gloves up and and prays, while Mayorga batters him around, Mayorga still manages to drop Vargas. If Thomas tries to trade, Mayorga might full well know hes not fit but he wont pace himself, he will still throw everything he has and go hell for leather, so itll either be Mayorga by Ko in the first or a Thomas submission.

Agreed about Mayorga.
Lets hope he can do it.
And then NEVER fight MMA again.
Likewise for Toney.

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
Oh bring in the clowns.Ive gone rouge on this and am not sure why?? I hope Couture knocks him cold. And no one at all in the mma should think they are facing "the" James Toney who is relevant.Means nattas!

Re: James Tony to fight Randy Couture under MMA rules!
A wrestling powerhouse in top condition like Couture is perhaps one of the worst case possible for Toney. ONe punch can make all the difference but Couture has so much experience, I hardly see how James could pull that one.

If Chuck Liddell and his sloppy style can knock out Couture or a jiujitsu guy in nogiera who really isnt good on his feet at all can drop and outslug him James Toney should be able to beat him. If on his feet definately
