Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
Thoought this would have already been posted on here after being in Sun this morning.
Anyway I hope this is not true and that a claim will not actually be made by anybody
Nigel Benn: I never took steroids | The Sun |Sport|Boxing

Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
WOW saddened to read that... i tend to belive Benn on this instance.
why the fuck would anyone test blood on a shoe for drugs 15 years after the event ???
and why contact Benn direct about it... it looks a little bit like blackmail to me if of course the story is true... this is the sun remember
-
Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
I read this in The Sun earleir too.
No way did Benn take steroids, this is just somebody from G Man's camp trying to bluff their way to a payout. With all the talk of PED's in boxing over the last few months somebody put 2 and 2 together and got 5.
Benn always strikes me as an honest and genuine bloke and this comes across in this interview. The sad thing is I bet Gerald has no idea his name and suffering is being used like this.
-
Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
Benn said a solicitor acting for the McClellan family contacted his agent, Kevin Lueshing, to say they had found blood on the boots the American wore in that fight - which contained traces of steroids.
Benn groaned: "This is 15 years after the fight mind you, and that is where I struggle to take all this in.
"They are saying it wasn't his blood, but blood with a steroid or some performance-enhancing drug in it. And if it wasn't Gerald's, then it must be yours.
......
Ok, so basically if I get it well, of two things:
1) Who the hell is keeping blood stain for 15 years on a pair of boxing boots and all of a sudden are thinking: "hey, let's pay to get that analyzed"
2) They made an analyze but they can't say who's blood it is and to top it up, they can say that it's full of enhancing substance but can't say which substance it is exactly....
To me, it smells phony from New-York to Hanoi, it would be the worst and less credible analyze ever made.

Well, they will be able to with a DNA test.
If its found to be true, Benns whole high intensity career will be tarnished and also, how many other old blood stains on shorts, gloves and boots from famous fights, kept as momentos will now be tested?
-
Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
Bull crap. After all of the dark days and tragedy of that night its a shame that smears would come about.Regardless it tarnishes Benn just by accusation and creates division and suspicion on family motives. Both deserve better.

They should have been able to testify it yet if it would be Benn's blood plus steroids do not remain in blood very long and anybody could easily just put a few drops of suspect stuff on a collectible stained item and pretend the other was juiced. This is utterly bullcrap if you ask me.
-
I don't know if Benn ever took steroids but I do know that he fouled The G-Man an awful lot and because of hitting him behind the head (multiple times and blatantly) and due to his actions AND the referee's lack of action Gerald McLellan is in the state he's in.

Thats could just be new, modern stuff.
I also think it comes out the system, as in the body cleans itself but if something was taken just prior to a fight then it might well be still in that blood.
I also reckon whoever is testing would be able to figure out how old the steroid in the blood is compared to the blood itself.

It might have somthing to do with the 100s of legal punches that Benn lannded to the head as well.
-
True and it could have also been because of G-Man's hard sparring before the fight. I'm just saying Benn did land numerous illegal blows and the ref did nothing, even when G-Man was blinking and couldn't hold his mouthpiece in properly, the ref didn't think anything was wrong. The ref also gave Benn time to fight off defeat when G-Man had Benn hurt early...most refs would have called it a TKO
-
Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
true - but he went through the ropes which changed things somewhat and afforded him the extra time.
had he not gone through then I have no doubt it would have been a KO.
but after that he beat gerald in a fair fight

It is IMPOSSIBLE to say definitively that an athlete has or has not used steroids without testing (although it is down to the athlete to prove that he is clean not the other way round). You don't know nigel Benn, You weren't in his training camps etc etc
The ONLY way to stop accusations like this happening is to bring proper random blood testing into the sport, then issues like this will never arise.
Blood on a boot 15 years later is a complete farce and I highly doubt anything will come of this. But had proper testing been done at the fight Benn wouldn't have to clear his name of this slur now.

Pathetic. The yank got spanked by a brit. Deal with it.

Yeah i read this in yesterday's SUN paper and was gutted to read it.Nigel Benn was and still is me favourite boxer.I grew up as a young kid in the 80's-90's watching his great fights. He was just soo raw and game every fight he was in.What a heart and desire Benn had.I only watched his dvd of his fights a couple of days ago before this news came up about him taking Steroids.I read his autobiography book a couple of years ago(its a great read, recommend it to anyone)and he does mention having wild parties AFTER his big fights with famous celebraties. He mentions having wild orgies with famous celebraties(most of which he did'nt want to mention due to reputation status).Benn was undefeated as he served in the army before going pro.Infact his record still stands today i think.Benn fought cruiserweights and heavyweight fighters in the army and still won, mainly by KO,that just goes to show how raw Benn was. There's no way Benn would have took steroid intentionally,"NO WAY!"
Benn is still me idol and always will be.Propper warrior Benn.Their sure dont create fighters like him anymore

If the referee was worth a damn, that fight would have ended cleanly without any controversy.

I wonder if the McLelland family are starting to run out of money for his care etc, and are seeing this as a cash cow.
Benn is one of my all time favourite fighters, I'd hate to see his name dragged through the mud.

Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
There is no real hard evidence against him and he has denied it himself. Seems like a load of nonsense to me. A bit wrong of McClennans family to suddenly discover 'evidence' after so long. It's like they waited for the Manny/Floyd debacle to get the idea.

Especially because they say there is "steroids or enhancing substances" involved but they can't say what it is, which is a nonsense in itself, if you detect something, you normally know what it is to make such claim. Also, from a 16 years old blood sampler taken on a boot which has passed through X hands in the meantime, it's one of the less credible assertion ever.

Balco has always been upfront with all the athlete's he has supplied, some might say differently. But I can't see how Conteh decide's to let some of his athletes know but keep others in the dark.
Chambers,Jones and Kelly White to just name a few have fully admitted now there involvement and they don't even blame Conteh, they say the only negative light in him is he may have manipulated them a little or as Chambers put it " groomed " him, but they all say the fella was upfront from the start told them all 100% this was illegal and gave them the final decision. So that's where I think the athletes who have been involved with Balco but still say they had no idea is total bullshit i.e Shane Mosley.
So for me everyone caught/involved with Balco new exactly what they were doing.

I don't know, when a guy is administered dosages of chemicals under the advisal of a company, without full knowledge of what he is injecting then I am sceptical.
I don't want to spoil this thread, but it is possible that athletes take what they believe is legal under the advisal of a company or individual.

There is video proof I posted on here a little while back of Mosely admitting he knew everything that was going on, that he was cheating. Then he has a fight that has random testing and doe absolutely shite!
It makes me feel sorry for Mayorga, although he has taken diuretics to lose weight he hasnt tried turning his body in to a weapon by being faster, stronger or be able to fight for longer. If there had been random testing in their fight I believe Mayorga would have won!
-
Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
....too long ago for me to care either way. Even floyd's steroid detection team thinks this is riddiculous.
-
Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
On another note without specualting to much if this is a way to get some sort of financial gain by G-Mans family, this is quite low. I know people in desperate situations do desperate things. But after what Nigel did few years back bit sad to see.
Nigel Benn off his own back in 2007 organised a fund raising night for G-MAN in and got alot of past and present fighters with deep pockets to attend, and in the end raised $300k for McLelland's family, which was a nice touch by Nigel.

Ok I certainly didn't want to turn this thread into a doping conversation, but i have to take issue with this.
Mosley nearing forty years of age, fought the most technically accomplished fighter of our generation and went the distance. Along the way he managed to rock Mayweather and although he was never active enough. I wouldn't deem that a "shite" performance.
Additionally, Shane Mosley was accused of HGH use for the De la Hoya fight only. Having competed at world title level for so so many years that is the only fight in which anything suspect was detected. That does not mean that Mosley was not tested on numerous occasions throughout his career. Given that he was involved with Balco and finally admitted to having used the Cream and the Clear, it would be foolish to think that Mosley was not more stringently tested before and after all of his fights following the scandal.
Mayorga was a relatively recent fight. That merely means that the fight took place having benefited from the lastest of testing methods which are more sensitive to supplements, performance enhancing chemicals and hormone levels. It is safe to say whatever occurred in the past, Shane Mosley was an aged fighter whose body was clean for the Mayorga fight.
And he still stopped Mayorga hard.

Mayorga admitted to using EPO, I believe he used something in the Mayorga and Margarito fights, he didnt tire in those fights like he did with Cotto and Floyd.
This is a video of Mosely admitting hes a filthy cheat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JMIB7g1mq0

Re: Nigel Benn Steroid Claim - 16 years later..........
I remember seeing how hard Benn trained on the way up. He was a fitness freak and had trained hard in the Army before becoming a Professional boxer.
There's no way he took PED's.

If you believe that he did I will not be able to change your mind here.
But with testing at the level it is recently, it would be nearly impossible to use anything without being caught in a World Title fight.
I don't mean to disregard the video, but it is a very one sided portrayal of the interview in how it shows certain answers and cuts the subsequent questions.

No worries, name mix ups happen.
Delusional? Not that I know of?
I know Mosley took EPO, he admitted it, His father admitted it, his whole team was taken apart because of it.
But...Mosley to this day is adamant that he believed he was acting within the rules of our sport and pleads ignorance of the substance.
The reason I'm taking issue with this is that Shane was only accused of EPO use for the De la Hoya fight.
As a fighter myself I know the level of testing that now exists in the sport. At World title level this testing is even more thorough and intensive. Had Mosley used EPO in fights such as Mayorga and Margarito it most certainly would have been detected.
